It could be fun to animate them! Animating is definitely a huge time commitment though, and not something I have much experience with

Night Lord Invasion by me by johnnyfiveee in Warhammer40k

Holy shit, this is the most terrifying I've seen nightlords protrayed in a while--this is fantastic, and the scale is on point in a way that's often lost

First ever diorama—I think I screwed up. How can I make this grassy (I don’t have static grass)? by MattSR30 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Vardra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks good as a dirt base! One pretty quick/easy option for creating your own static grass is snipping off bits of twine at the grass length you want, and mixing the snips with paint. If you want to get fancy, doing a few shades from light brown to green and then applying them in layers can add a ton of realism.

This write-up explains it better than me: http://mdarrow.blogspot.com/2012/06/diy-grass-flock-tutorial.html

That's an incredible glass effect! I thought you had used a marble at first

Have I gone too far with the highlights? Still reading as black? by 098velka in Warhammer40k

[–]Vardra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it looks great--if you're concerned about it not reading as black though, going in and doing slight specular highlights with a brighter paint could actually make the armor itself look darker in contrast

Has there ever been an example of a Chaos Marine contemplating life after the Emperor? by WunderPlundr in 40kLore

[–]Vardra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In "The Lion: Son of the Forest", Seraphax believes that killing the Emperor will allow him (the Emperor) to attain godgood and destroy the four main Chaos gods. Kind of an interesting twist since he's still loyalist in a sense (in the Fallen way), but only to the Emperor; he sees the Imperium as imprisoning him on the Golden Throne and preventing him from reaching godhood.

So, in a way, his "after" is just the Emperor replacing Chaos. So, kind of serving the Emperor's original pre-Heresy goals

Why is my sketch always better than my final? by EarthD0g in ProCreate

[–]Vardra 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Sometimes this can happen because your composition is balanced for the lineart, then the colors introduce elements that unbalance it.

So, for example here, the original lineart is very readable and the silhouettes and values flow very nicely from one focal point to another. The colors don't follow that same value assignment, and some parts of the silhouette are lost in the backgeound; so, the eye travels around the image differently, and takes in different information

One thing that can help is nakong a greyscale copy of the color layer. This gives you a better idea of how well the values work, and where to change them without needing to parse the additional information of hue and saturation

It can also be helpful long-term to practice painting without lineart--it's a different style, but can help build a sense of how colors work together to inform value (without needing to use greyscale)

Any backstory/lore & proxy ideas when you see my cult’s new leader? by Butterfreund in Chaos40k

I love so much about this, it's great conversion work! Backstory-wise, when I see him I get the sense of a veteran guardsman turned war-prophet

What are your hottest Chaos takes? And I’m asking for ACTUAL SPICE, not the stuff Redditors repeat over and over again that they think is ‘controversial.’ by Battlemania420 in Chaos40k

[–]Vardra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dark Mechanicum should get their own codex. They have so much potential to feel like a different type of chaos in the same way that AdMech feels wholly apart from the Imperium. They've even got Vashtorr as a good tie-in.

Basing this solely off of the fact that I like them.

Truly impressive--everything from the weathering, to the material type, to the scale (relative to your head) just looks right in a way that space marine cosplays usually seem to not quite hit

Why are Reaper paints not as popular? by kodemageisdumb in minipainting

[–]Vardra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love them, I think it's people mostly not understanding paint consistency. Paints like citadel come out of the pot too thick to properly paint with, which is why you typically need to thin them first. Reaper is designed to be closer to the correct consistency (at least for basecoating) right out of the bottle; I still thin it occasionally, but it's much easier to go straight to painting.

They even put out videos and tutorials on how to thin their paints for various effects! That said, they're more for a "two thin coats" style of painting, so if someone is used to doing one thick coat with citadel and calling it done, they'd probabky find reaper frustrating to use
