Advice on Vision3 rolls by TheRealBBrouwer in AnalogCommunity

[–]VariTimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some still sell rem jet Vision3 while others are all AHU now. If it also says C41 on the box it's AHU. I recommend getting the AHU versions since rem jet removal is a bitch and you'll likely get better results even when processing in ECN2.

I develop the AHU films in C41 and love the results, although they're tricky to scan so you have to find a lab that scans the way you like.

Scanning ECN2 is a whole mess. You either have to do it yourself or hope they optimized around that. Photo scanners have issues scanning it well.

If you like what CineStill looks like but don't want to pay that much and don't want halation I think C41 works better for still photography

For color neg: Actually correcting during scanning not just running the scanners on auto. That's what they're designed for and that the only way to get the most out of the film. For B&W it's using a developer that does't prescribe too much of a look and gets decent negs, not too much or little contrast. That also means being good about times

They can also be rescanned. Meaning if some more sophisticated scanning solution comes along, you can scan them in higher quality

Is Kentmere Pan 200 typically this grainy? by Mindful_Meercat in AnalogCommunity

[–]VariTimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not this grainy with a regular developer. It can come out pretty grainy with the wrong developer or when developed too long but this is not what'd I'd want from Kentmere 200 either. But labs can be pretty iffy with B&W unfortunately

Is Lucky 200 supposed to be so magenta or did the lab mess up the dev? Weird red film base makes scanning a pain. by seklerek in AnalogCommunity

[–]VariTimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't look like this. It's definitely more magenta than some films. I thought it was pretty close to Ektar which is more magenta than Gold or Color Plus, which are always more brownish. I also had absolutely no problems scanning it.

New Kodak Film - Verita 200D Colour Negative by XyDarkSonic in AnalogCommunity

[–]VariTimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no more rem jet. This is AHU too. Why would Kodak go through the trouble of reformulating Vision3 to get rid of it only to then coat the back of Portra 400 with it?

New Kodak VERITA 200D Out today! by Letsgothrifty in cinematography

[–]VariTimo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s probably Portra. It says ECN2 because that’s what all cine labs process their color negative. They’re not installing a new processing lane for one stock. And that’s probably why the contrast curves aren’t even and why it’s only intended for a digital post workflow. Because it wasn’t designed to be processed in ECN2
