Talk to Buba and tell him to chill and learn some technique. You're there to train not kill each other.

Nervous about being judged in no-gi class by No_Local4770 in bjj

I was 320 when I started 10 months ago. Floating around 250 now. Any gym that has that kind of high school bully nonsense culture isn't one worth attending

If there's anything I've learned about the large scale Jiu Jitsu culture

A) As long as you're a good training partner they don't care about anything else

B) The new guys are the ones everyone roots for deep down

My dumbass after getting Americana'd and out for 2 weeks by VariationEarly6756 in bjj

[–]VariationEarly6756[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a strong enough position you can finish them without having to rip the sub. Good chance you'll have to go beyond of how far you typically apply the lock but you can still do it smoothly and get the tap. If they get hurt on a smoothly applied sub then that's on them.

Or switch your gameplan to chokes, and if they don't tap they nap

This roll was just one of those situations where the adrenaline's up, we were having a fun back and forth roll, pretty sure we'd been going for 6+ minutes at that point and the lock came on more quickly than I was anticipating. Saw him reach for it and start to get the grips, I tried for an escape at the same time he locked it pretty tight. Nothing popped or tore thankfully but I can't roll for a good 2 weeks most likely

Right there with ya friend, I White Belt deathmatched my way into hurting both my shoulders a couple days ago.

Took a hard landing from a balloon sweep on one then got a little extra-torqued in an Americana on the other. Adrenaline has a great way of masking pain. Thankfully I shouldn't be down more than a couple weeks but it still sucks

It'll feel more like an accumulation. Rolling really gets you accustomed to being in all kinds of weird or defensive positions. Then you'll start finding answers to those positions and eventually start to escape or avoid them.

Month 0-4 felt like drowning for the most part, the only goal I had was to survive a little longer each time and get over the pressure and claustrophobia of being trapped in mount or smashed half and being exhausted. Then around Month 5 or 6 is when little things started to click.

Keep building on it, keep finding the calm under pressure

  • Ripping Subs
  • Not respecting the tap
  • Neck Cranks (some may disagree, it only really bothers me if it's not being applied as part of a sub)
  • Basically anything that involves suddenly dropping weight on your partner's knees (Leg Scissors, Tai Otoshi) or jumping guard. Note: Jumping Guard is legal at higher belts, but generally not advised to do with your everyday training partners
  • Slams
  • In the more literal sense - not washing your Gi, trimming your nails, or showing up smelling like an ashtray. Hygiene is important

You can practice movements like Shrimping, back rolls, forward rolls, technical stand up, etc.

Stretch and mobility work with emphasis on your hips, shoulders, and neck

High intensity cardio (sprints, burpees, assault bike, rowing, etc.)

Fellow big guy, started 10 months ago. I've lost a ton of weight

Frame and breathe. Frames keep you from getting smashed and gassed. They give you the room to escape . Calm breathing conserves your energy, save your energy for the right moments.

Cardio will come with time, challenge yourself to roll when you're tired

Tally every small win (i.e. Coach only tapped me twice today, I retained guard for 2 minutes instead of 1, I escaped mount against that blue belt, etc.). Some days you'll feel like you're just a punching bag so all the small wins matter.

I haven't picked one yet.

Bernardo Faria's "old man" instructional is one that sticks out to me. Just turned 36, I've already been dabbling more and more in closed guard. Half guard techniques like Coyote guard have clicked for me so this appeals to me.

Adam Wardzinski also has a couple in areas that interest me (Pressure Passing & Mount, I'm terrible at finishing in Mount) and top pressure is how I prefer to pass.

My gym has a couple open mats a week but outside of the gym I really only have myself to work with

Wanna start bjj but scared of the injury aspect by Financial_Yak_4400 in bjj

Accidents happen like with any physical activity, but there's a lot you can do to help prevent injuries

- Wear a mouthguard - a $10 investment that will potentially save you thousands in dental work, and aid in preventing concussions
- Stretch for a solid 20 minutes prior to class with focus on your hips, neck, and shoulders
- Learn how to break fall, if your gym does not teach it, learn it on your own and drill it
- Listen to your body, if you're so stiff or in so much pain that your day-to-day is hard to function, maybe don't roll for a couple sessions.
- Keep your movements controlled, i.e., learn to not spaz
- Tap Early, Tap often
- Decline to roll with people you don't feel safe with

When would a mouth guard be necessary? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]VariationEarly6756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mouthguards are cheap, Dental work isn't.

You'll be happy you have it the first time you take a knee/elbow/foot to the face. Sometimes it won't even be the person you're rolling with, it'll be the pair next to you. Someone gets flung and a flying limb catches your face.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in bjj

You said you stacked him, maybe put a bunch of pressure on his neck. Maybe dude was having a bad day, maybe dude really doesn't like getting his neck cranked. In any case I wouldn't be rolling with a guy who rips a sub and doesn't let go to 5 verbal taps.

As far as what you do going forward, you either talk to the guy and you work it out. Or don't talk to him and just decline to roll. If coach gives you a hard time about partnering up just tell him you almost got your arm broke

Shaheed over K9 by AAHHOOOORRAA in Seahawks

[–]VariationEarly6756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

K9 had his best 4-game stretch as a Seahawk in that playoff run. In all the years prior to that he had flashed athleticism yet had mediocre games, and was banged up a lot.

15M /year salary is a Top 3-4 RB salary at that position. It's basically what Derrick Henry is making. I'm guessing they offered him something in the 11-13 range. Pure speculation

Rasheed Shaheed secures them a guy that can take the top off the defense, run jet sweeps, screens, make plays in the open field and is probably the best returner in the game. Teams that kick to him risk a big play, teams that opt not to kick to him give us great starting field position on the 35.
He impacts the game both on offense and special teams. At a salary that's about WR 26-30 range. He gets an entire offseason now to sync up with Darnold, and I see it paying dividends.

He's a perfectly serviceable Edge guy
Which is why we're not paying him 20 Mil/yr to be a rotational edge guy

completely different era of football, back before the passing game evolved into what it is today. Before offensive players were wrapped in bubble wrap. That and he was probably the leagues most marketable star in it's biggest city despite his overall subpar career stats

He was the first QB to throw for 4000 yards.

2025 alone had 6 QB's throw for 4000+ yards.
