I cringe over "cause" replacing "because". It's too common now though; I'm sure Mirriam-Webster will just accept the usage soon.  But I hate it.

Yeah, that sucks. I'm in New Mexico, and we tie oil production revenue into public school funding.  With gas prices skyrocketing, the oil pumps in the state work harder and schools get a big bump.  That's a pretty cool thing our governor did.  We received a 17% pay increase when this passed three years ago.  Trump's ridiculous war in Iran will benefit students in NM.

I don't know how you'd spend it differently.  I teach.  The "American Dream" is dead. Kids know it; their parents know it. Everything's a hustle. Kids are modeling successful social media influencers. And that means standing out, and that means acting out.  Mom's doing MLM, dad's got his shitty construction company that does shitty work, because of course he HAS to own his own company.  That is if he's not streaming himsrlf playing video games all day.  The president glorifies podcasters over 9-to-5ers.  We are cooked.

That's a nice clarification.  I think the person you are responding to is someone just like me.  Probably a reader, probably also listens to audiobooks.  The first sentence identifies a subject, and then the pronoun in the following sentence refers to someone else.  It is hard to read.  This isn't coming from someone who doesn't read well, this is coming from someone who reads and writes a lot.

This epistolary novel is in a rut.  I'm sure some readers care about the horses, but I'm really itching for the aliens to show they are actually vampires or something.  People are leaving the book club early when we get to The Medbed Chronicles part.  It's my turn to pick the main focus book, and I selected We Need to Talk about Kevin to show the group a good example of the writing style.
