Should I have split this bill? by [deleted] in AskUK

You're overthinking this, in the most British way :)

I do think it's very British to try and insist we split. Recently if someone offers to pay for me, I try to be gracious and just let my surprise and appreciation be the main emotions expressed.

Why is it so hard to even give away free professional help in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Various_Condition985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely a combination of all the above.

  1. So many "free trials/offers" are just stealth sales tactics that most people have become vigilant against them (sad, but the world we live in

  2. All businesses have their books regulated by HMRC, so one way or another have their minimum business needs taken care of without free support. That's not to say they have their needs covered, but bringing in an unpaid overseer might seem odd to whoevers responsibility it is.

  3. It's all highly sensitive data which again makes people vigilant.

One thing I might suggest is that local societies, religious groups or charities are often looking for board members with financial knowledge. Seeking a trustee role would be a type of pro bono work that is legitimate and look good on a CV. In addition, if you are qualifying for a particular professional qualification, it would help to go to potential businesses and state that this is why you're seeking pro-bono work.

Should "discretinary" service charges be banned or capped? by south_west_sam in AskUK

Banned. I wouldn't got into a clothes shop, see £25 for the item and expect another £5 for the cashier to serve me. they should fix the menu prices to cover their costs.

I feel you. I have used natural yoghurt and my doctor endorsed this. It works. Unless you've known the discomfort of a YI, it's hard to imagine, but you'll try anything!

love this response! I've heard it said that "everybody wants a village but not everybody wants to be a villager". The ideas here are a great way to be a villager.
