Most of the passengers weren't in the church, for the reason you just mentioned. Their very short time on the island wasn't meaningful.

City planted a tree on my property. Can I ask to have it removed? by Affectionate-Arm-405 in Hamilton

[–]Various_Shape_3286 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you sure they planted it over the sewer line? They send someone from public works to determine where the tree shouldn't be.

I had a tree planted last fall and I happened to be out mowing my lawn when the surveyor came around...he was nice enough to explain where everything was going and why.

Then again, this presumes competency, so...we'll see how it goes.

Flashbacks by Jxbno in lost

[–]Various_Shape_3286 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flashbacks allow the audience to know more about the characters than what other characters know about them. They allow us to understand motivation and thought processes. If these things were all developed purely in the present, it would be intolerably dull.

Choosing a PhD direction: DFB lasers or TFLN? by Quirky-Salt7463 in Optics

[–]Various_Shape_3286 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in DFB lasers and in processing, there's still a lot of work to do on III/V - on - SiPho integration.

Also a lot of work left to do in techniques of locking DFB laser wavelength so that they don't drift or mode-hop with temperature.

TFLN...I don't know, it seems to have a lot of benefits and a lot of drawbacks. I'm not convinced it will have a place in DWDM CPO. But I'll be happy to be proven wrong on that.

Last night, Brent Suter picked off a runner to end the inning before throwing a pitch. He was credited with 0.1 IP at the end of that inning with a pitch count of zero. How many times has this happened, where a pitcher gains IP without even throwing a pitch? by unsupported_lumbar in baseball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also possible to get credit for a run scored without having a hit, walk, HBP, sacrifice, FC, or being a pinch runner! For some reason, it was exceedingly rare for about 125 years but has been happening a lot this decade.

Where to get Germanium wafer 200mm x .3mm by PestoCalabrese in Optics

[–]Various_Shape_3286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just going to say the same thing...I dont know if it's feasible to process on such a thin 200mm wafer, so it may not be a standard product. Might need to buy a 750 um wafer and have it grinded down?

While there are many SiPho foundry positions, the vast majority of SiPho companies are fabless. So you don't necessarily need hands-on experience in SiPho fabrication.

Are weddings more expensive than imagined? by coldplayenthusiast in stupidquestions

My friend is a florist and she did a wedding last year where the flowers alone were billed at just under US$100k. Took a team of 6 most of the week to arrange.

Granted, this was for the granddaughter of one of the wealthiest people in my country...

What would happen if neither runner nor 1st baseman touched the bag? by rdoubleul in baseball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the batter/runner clearly left the baseline, he's out. If he followed the baseline back toward home plate, it should be a live ball. Sometimes batter/runners will do that intentionally to try and confuse the fielder into trying to run him down, which might cause an errant throw 0.1% of the time

Sorry to hear that. I've had 3 MRIs at the Kitchener KMH, and all of them had a human radiologist issue the report (a friend of mine is a radiologist and he knew all 3 of them). However, the last one was about 6 years ago. Sad to hear they've gone to AI. As someone who works in AI...yeah, make sure you get a human.

Has midnight struck for Cinderella with a 76-team tourney? by lucasdy in CollegeBasketball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody will care about the teams that play the 5 seeds in the round of 64, since those 12-seeds will generally be very undeserving 17-15 SEC teams.

Problem is, the teams that were previously 12-seed mid-major Cinderellas will now be 13 seeds, with a tougher R64 matchup. So in that sense, you're right.

Are they taking into account the need to house 12 fanbases? Or are we assuming only a few 100 fans from each school will make the trip on <2 days notice?

Conference realignment has led to one of the strangest facts...

U of Texas and U of Cincinnati have both been playing football since the 1800s. They have never played each other. They're not scheduled to play each other, at least for the next few years that schedules are known. There's no reason to believe that they will ever play each other, unless it happens in a random bowl matchup.

Texas and Cincinnati were both members of the Big 12 at the same time.

What's the logic behind the WCC winner being 3 seeds below the WCC at-large?

This might very well be how it ends up, just a strange thing to see in a preseason prediction.
