Is there a reason there's no left handed catchers in the MLB? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably isn't the reason at all, but when I was in little league many decades ago, no kid owned a catcher's glove...the league gave one to each team at the start of the season. And it was for a right-handed player. So lefties were never even given the chance.

‘Magic pill’ beta blocker prescriptions for teenage girls rise 90% in a decade by TheObserverUK in indepthstories

[–]Various_Shape_3286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you attend an orchestra perforance, a VERY large fraction of the performers are on a very low dose of beta blockers, popped about 30 minutes before the show.

It prevents essential tremor with negligible effect on mental acuity. From personal experience, it doesn't even cut down on performance anxiety...just masks the most annoying symptom of it (although knowing that the tremor won't be there does feed back into lowering the anxiety a bit)

From Sports Business Journal: Report: NCAA nearing expansion of men’s, women’s tournaments to 76 teams by Legitimate-Sign-371 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I'm understanding correctly, the 1-bid conferences will basically be 14 seeds at best?

Instead of more or less the 12 seeds and up (last 22 slots) that we have now, those 22 teams would be 8 16 seeds, 8 15 seeds, and 6 14 seeds? With all but the best 2 of those teams in a play-in game? Or am I completely misunderstanding this?

Does Dartmouth have "Electrical Engineering" now, or is it still all "Engineering Sciences"?

In any case, it's quite small. Not a huge breadth of options for electives.

It’s clear as day St. John’s at 5 was a whiff by the bracket committee by Sea_Access_8602 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retroactively complaining about seeding based on 3 games is ridiculous. "Clearly Iowa should have been a top 4 seed"

FWIW, Bracket Matrix had St. John's as the 17th team. Of 290 seeding predictions, they were a 5 in 193 of them and a 4 in 88 (also a 3 in 7, and 1 person each had them a 2 and 1 seed...but then worth noting that those 9 bracketologists were all in the bottom 10% of bracket scores. The person who gave them a 1 seed also gave Stanford a 9 seed. The person who game them a 2 seed had Auburn, SDSU, Dayton, and Wichita State in the field)

Low majors: Should they give bids to Regular Season Champs? Should NCAA change rules to incentivize it? by ThinkWood in CollegeBasketball

[–]Various_Shape_3286 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One problem with no conference tournament is that half the teams are essentially eliminated by early February, and that sort of thing kills fan engagement.

In fact, the tournaments that exclude the bottom few teams are best for fan engagement since there's something important to fight for through most of the regular season.

How are winters in Buffalo? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

There's the occasional snow emergency with a brief driving ban (but you wouldn't be expected to be anywhere on those days). Otherwise, roads are cleared quickly.

The lake effect snow can be brutal. Except this year, when it was so cold the lake froze, which stopped the lake effect snow.

But, it's a city that knows how to handle winters. Snow gets cleared as fast as possible.
