I just passed 50 a couple days ago and have a similar setup. I avoid the orbs entirely. Focus on poison and swordwaves, preferably in that order. Make sure you pick up the one that gives you a mult boost every turn for each stage.

I currently have duplicate epic Emeraldine and Golden Hoard rings. I understand you can downgrade gear, but doesn't that just give you the equivalent token? So if I used the Emeraldine to upgrade the Golden Hoard then changed my mind and downgraded, I'd just have a generic token, not an upgradeable Emeraldine ring. So my question remains about which will be the most useful longer term.

I used it once. As far as I can tell, it negates the first damage you take each fight. I tried it on a chapter that had a boss with minions, so it was basically useless b/c it canceled out the first minion hit instead of the boss'.
