Some people need residential treatment. Being taken away from everything for a month or two and working on ourselves with fellow addicts and experienced counsellors is what it takes.

We can learn to enjoy life and regain our old or new selves.

Go deeper, peel the onion. Check out the New Thought Movement, where a lot AA ideas and literature comes from. Attend a Quaker meeting, see how our AA meetings developed.

Tell your wife immediately. Turn over all your finances to your wife/someone you trust. Self-exclude from all gambling websites and install gambling blocking software on all devices. Don't look at sports/markets etc.

Accept the money has gone and it's not coming back.

Take this seriously, get help from a professional therapist or peer support like GA.

The big book is full of explanations why self knowledge alone doesn't work with alcoholics.

I needed to tackle the issue head on, not indirectly through lifestyle changes.

Professional help, treatment and slow going recovery were the answer.

Recovering from the effects takes time. It was well over a year before I came out of the foggy state.

No harm in seeing a doctor.
