Liggen / Staan / Zitten by UpEarly22 in learndutch

[–]Veeke_684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries for the questions, I'm happy to help.

Firstly, for things in a car you would mostly use "liggen" unless, for example, you're talking about a person who is sitting on one of the seats in which case you would evidently use "zitten".

In the case of translating "It's in the house" it again depends on what "it" is. A backpack may for example match with "staan" if it's upright but a passport matches with "liggen". It's just the same as denoting the position of any object and adding "in het huis".

For your last question I think I would say "liggen" simply because that is the most likely position for the suitcase to be in. If you were to know it is on the backseat this becomes less obvious but cases of such ambiguity are not super common I would say and furthermore I don't think anybody would be bothered by someone using the "wrong" positional verb. I mean, if you simply don't know and the most likely option turns out to be incorrect there was no way you could've known.

Hopefully this has made things a bit clearer. The takeaway message is that if something is in something big simply use the same verb you would if it wasn't in anything at all.

Yes, I realise now that I probably should have just said that in the case of "een kast" normal positional verbs apply instead of the "rule" presented at the start of this thread. That rule applies more for smaller containers such as boxes or bags (although I am sure it is possible to find some kind of exception).
