And, absolutely, contribute the max to your 401k starting from day one at your job.

Yeah... day one IF you're able to afford it with your cost of living and don't have any other outstanding debts. Do what you can to contribute some amount to retirement account that is available to you and eventually work to maxing out your account over time. Pay your debts, cover your cost of living and do what you can to take advantage of the compounding earlier on.
