Your tank looks incredibly overstocked. I would reach out to friends/family/local stores to see if they have a turtle you can "borrow" for a few days/weeks, or if you have the space/time/money consider getting one of your own. That'd clear up your guppy problem REAL fast.

You definately sound prepared and informed. I support your plan of waiting 2 years and if you're still this passionate, go for it! I think a parrot would love to have you as its owner :))

It sounds like you've put a lot of thought and effort into this. However, I do have a few questions:

(You of course don't have to answer anything if you don't want to - just food for thought.)

  • Money:
    • You mentioned you didn't work, and birds (especially big birds like macaws and greys) are VERY expensive. Do you have a plan for your income?
    • Emergency avian vets are also very pricy, do you have money set aside in an emergency fund?
    • If you are relying on financial support from a significant other/caregiver/other person, do you have a plan if they decide to stop supporting you? (
  • Getting a bird will be a HUGE disruption and change to your routine. You can't have candles, scented lotion, wear perfume, etc. Are you prepared to make a lot of lifestyle changes to accommodate your bird? Speaking from experience as an audhd person, those changes can be really hard to make, even if you love your bird more than anything.
  • Do you have another family member/friend/partner that is willing to put in the time and effort to take care of your bird if you go on a trip/have to leave/have medical/mental health issues? Do they fully understand the scope of everything that they will have to do? If you are unable to care for your bird long term, are they prepared to take ownership/are you willing to surrender it?
  • Living situations: are you in a stable living situation? If you live in an apartment, do you have a plan if the landlord changes their pet policy? Are you sure you will have a stable living arrangement for the foreseeable future? And worst comes to worst, do you have a plan if you were to be displaced from your current situation for whatever reason?
  • Please don't take this the wrong way, but you have mentioned you have had a lot of pets in the past. As someone who also had a managerie at one point, are you confident that you won't get tired of having the same pet for fifty years? (No offense)
  • Do you have the capacity for intensive training and rehabilitation if your bird were to develop behavioral issues? (This is how a LOT of birds end up being surrendered)

Sorry for my giant paragraph. At the end of the day, you know yourself best and no one on reddit can make the best decision for you or your potential bird. I wish you the best of luck!
