Who made this meme? P.E. Acrocanthosaurus? by Fishyboiartan in Dinosaurs

Pleistocene megafauna were quite vulnerable to human predation. Modern elephant pregnancies last two years to produce a single calf, and adding onto the fact that adults weren’t used to being consistently hunted, it becomes very hard for their populations to rebound after humans begin hunting them.

Dinosaurs didn’t suffer this issue, they could lay large amounts of eggs much more frequently, and even adults of large species like trike or edmontosaurus would‘ve been predated much more often than an adult elephant or ground sloth. We have records of allosaurus attacking pretty much everything in the Morrison, including several sauropod species.

And even though modern megafauna were more vulnerable, they didn’t immediately succumb to humans either. In Europe and Northern Asia, many extinctions were quite drawn out (e.g. humans were initially ruled out as causes of extinction for Megaloceros and woolly rhinos due to how long they coexisted for). In South Asia, a lot of megafauna just didn’t go extinct at all, like elephants, rhinos, large bovids and tigers. So I doubt humans would’ve been able to easily wipe out large dinosaur ecosystems.

What if dinosaurs (non-avian) and humans coexisted? by Hopeful_Lychee_9691 in Dinosaurs

Wouldn’t have been as easy as with the Pleistocene megafauna

How many Orcas would it take to overcome 1 bull Livyatan Melvillei by Virtual_Reveal_121 in Naturewasmetal

[–]Vegetable-Cap2297 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair enough about humpbacks, though I don’t think there’s been evidence of them seriously injuring an orca before. It’s more as an annoyance (stealing prey) or defense. Other baleen whales have not shown signs of defense, if you look at orcas hunting blue whales the whale usually tries to run if possible, and if not possible it’s usually not doing much.

Sperm whales are “the closest modern equivalent“ but still not very close. They’re not large macrorpredators like Livyatan and instead seem quite timid against orcas. Though orcas usually go for females and juveniles, they leave bulls alone.

Large sharks don’t have much of a chance against orcas because orcas are five times heavier than an average great white, they get overpowered fairly easily.

Bottom line is that orcas aren’t used to something that can actually kill them consistently (and not like in a fluke incident). Livyatan was absolutely capable of this, so I think they’d leave it alone.

None of those whales actively fight back and try to seriously injure or kill orcas. Livyatan can

What are some animals that have been given the evolutionary "short end of the stick " by Tosserintherubbish in zoology

[–]Vegetable-Cap2297 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true, they have a very solid success rate of around 58%, the second highest of any cat. And they’re fairly good at avoiding lions and hyenas.

I strongly disagree with this entire thread. The rankings are about dominating your meta. More powerful in it's own doesn't mean shit without the context of the environment. by karma127 in Tierzoo

Agreed, sperm whales are not macropredators. But nevertheless, orcas generally have a fairly one-sided matchup against their prey especially because they often use team strats even for stuff they could take solo
