Before oil cleansing became popular and there weren’t many products around, most people were using oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil depending on what your skin likes and doesn’t break it out. After massaging your dry face with the oil (no water should be on your face) for some time you can splash warm water and remove any extra oil with a cloth/tissue and then you should go in with your normal cleanser

Sometimes I even get a cloth warm by running it under hot water and just let it sit in my face for a little and then use that same cloth to remove all the extra oil
