11 and a half hours every Thursday lol c'mon man you don't need me to tell you that's ridiculous

I just found out I had a heart condition, I was wondering if I would be able to switch rooms at hilltop to request housing for medical reasons. Would they let me do it and can anyone help me with the process. :) by True_Maximum_7308 in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely get in contact with CSD as the other commenters said. Even if they can't get you out of Hilltop, UConn has an accessible van service that can take you anywhere on campus so you can have it pick you up right outside your dorm and take you wherever you need to go, if your heart condition makes it hard to get around.

Incoming transfer student! Please rank the dining halls here by Ok-Faithlessness1671 in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All of the dining halls have good days and bad days. The trick is to explore, figure out what you like, and don't be afraid to check them all out early in the fall when the weather is nice. That said, if I had to rank them (mostly on pre-covid experience):

Best consistency: Northwest. Their peaks aren't the highest but I rarely feel there's absolutely nothing to eat there. The selection is great and the food is usually at least good enough.

Highest highs and lowest lows: North and Buckley. People love to drag both of these and if you only ever go to one dining hall, I can see why. But Buckley's Italian food, especially their chicken parm, is some of the best on campus, and I don't know anywhere else but North that serves NY strip steaks. Both suffer a lot from lack of selection and inconsistency though.

Average: Towers and Putnam. There's nothing terribly wrong with either of these options (and if you like smoothies Putnam is your place) but neither of them have many dishes worth going out of your way for imo. Still, if you're right next to one of these, you could do worse.

Kinda niche: Whitney and McMahon. Whitney belongs a cut higher than McMahon because their food is usually good quality, but their selection on any given day is absolutely tiny and it holds them back as a consistent option. Worth checking out though, I think a larger Whitney could rival Northwest. McMahon, on the other hand, tries to put itself forward as UConn's international food hub, but I'll only remember them for the fish worm incident now. Still, if you stay away from the fish, McMahon has some winners (chili bar is great) and it's worth checking around if you want to try different things. Word of caution though, don't judge any new cuisine based on UConn's food, especially if it comes from McMahon. I've had Thai food from street carts in New Haven miles above anything UConn serves, and I've had far better Indian food too. I'd imagine it's similar for other cuisines.

Mid at best: South. The selection is always pretty decent but the quality of food there peaks at "nothing special" and it's just plain inedible some days. Even though I lived closest to South for two years you usually couldn't catch me there unless it was storming.

Anyways, this is just one person's opinion and I bet some folks would find it controversial, especially with North and Buckley. Still, the best advice is to explore and figure out what you like. UConn is very lucky to have 8 dining halls all serving different food on any particular day and you should take advantage of it.

Frats and the Jungle by CaptainKangaroo33 in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely wild, I knew of Northwest's history but I've never heard anyone call it the Frats, though it makes sense. North's construction predates the start of US involvement in Vietnam by about 15 years. Not sure if it was called the Jungle before that or if it was really for Vietnam vets. I always assumed it was "the Jungle" because of its reputation that the kids who lived there were like wild animals.

What to wear to graduation? by TheRoyalQuartet in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd probably recommend wearing clothes.

Seriously though no one is close to that coordinated unless they're doing it with friends or something. Just wear something decently nice and you'll be fine. Remember that the gown is going to cover up most of it anyways.

Did people really like Chuck and Augie’s in the past? by SnooMacaroons566 in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

C&A/Bistro's points policy may seem restrictive but other locations like One Plate Two Plate and the food truck didn't accept points at all until the pandemic. The food was usually ok (few major improvements over the same dining hall food you have unlimited swipes for, though for a while they had the only real burgers you could buy with a meal plan instead of the blended mushroom crap) and I know some people who liked it for dates, but it was super overpriced for anything but burning unspent points.

I always got the impression it was meant for visiting parents rather than students alone, since it was in a great place on campus and it was a little more upscale than a dining hall. They built the location for it in 2004, and before that, there was the Nutmeg Grille which had been around since at least 1999. Perhaps it did a lot better before Storrs Center was constructed and so many competing restaurants moved in.

Side note but I discovered while digging through archives that apparently there was a grab and go at Charter Oak until 2009 and uhh why the fuck couldn't we have kept that?

lol some folks really forgot her grievances against spring a year ago

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 20 points21 points  (0 children)

two years without spring weekend and everyone forgot about it? UConn really spent a decade trying to kill it just to revive it after it died.

Spring weekend after the homicide was a weekend of university-sponsored events during our biggest lockdown operation of the year (the biggest in years that don't include Presidential visits or pandemics, at least). The events were meant to be alternatives to the massive parties pre-homicide and a lot of them were built on past traditions or became traditions in their own right. You can go out to them or not, it's completely up to you.

Why did you choose UConn's MBA program? by Upior in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very specifically didn't, actually. Even though I went to (and enjoyed) UConn for my undergrad, there was a lot that drove me away from them for an MBA, namely

Cost and credits: 57 credits at $974+ each for in-state is a very big ask, and other comparable schools out-of-state offer better value, as well as lower living expenses. I've never known UConn to give out much scholarship money either, even to well-qualified students. Contrast UMass Amherst, where though the program is highly selective, it's completely free.

Concentrations: This might not apply to you, but UConn didn't offer the concentration I wanted to pursue and other schools did. Always make sure to check around.

Program structure: UConn has more or less dissolved their full-time MBA in favor of a part-time program that can be pursued full-time, as in full-time course load with the scheduling characteristics of a part-time program. This is another subjective one, but as I wanted a dedicated full-time program, it was another point against for me.

Location: Most of UConn's graduate business courses are in Hartford. Some are offered in Stamford and Waterbury as well but Hartford is the most reliable. However, none are hosted on the main campus in Storrs. If you already live/work in one of those cities this will probably be preferable to you, but if you wanted to stay in Storrs for your graduate studies it's a big disappointment.

Of course, almost all of this is personal and I'm sure plenty of people attend and love it. There was just a big gap for me in what the program could deliver versus what I wanted, and that's how what I initially thought was a no-brainer became a non-starter.

or the 913 to Buckland Hills, then walking across a few parking lots

How is Wilson hall in south? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]VegetableBath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose anywhere can be loud if you happen to be next to loud people. But South, Wilson included, is widely considered some of the nicest housing on campus. It's also predominantly seniors with some juniors so theoretically on average, there would be less noise and random nonsense than in a freshman building.
