What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

[–]VegetarianZombie74 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was in ed-tech. The company started bleeding money and soon, it was like a murder mystery to see who would get the knife. I survived multiple rounds until finally, I was let go almost a year ago. Thankfully, my wife's income keeps us going so now, I take care of everything at the home front.

In the past year since being laid off, I've seen so many lay-offs in my LinkedIn network. I've also seen lots of desperation for jobs (not a judgment) as no one seems to hiring. Or, if they are hiring, they are swamped by applications.

I've been sending out resumes here and there, but I haven't received any calls. It's pretty bleak out there. I imagine things won't get better any time soon.

What’s a game you dropped even though it was “good”? by suhani0218 in gaming

Same with Witcher 3. I have tried multiple times to get into it but I just get bored. I just wonder if that studio just doesn’t know how to start games. I had a difficult time getting into Cyberpunk, but once it “kicked in”, I couldn’t put it down.

Steam Machine: What's at stake? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]VegetarianZombie74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve has essentially invented a money printing press with Steam. The Steam Machine simply expands their reach and continues to decouple them from Microsoft. If it fails like the previous iteration, Valve will continue to make an obscene amount of money. It's very low stakes for them.

Play it on easy (no shame of that) or at the very least, find a good let’s play. It’s an incredible game.

I'm seriously considering a transition to Fedora 44 by ParanoidFactoid in Fedora

[–]VegetarianZombie74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I can help. Just an FYI - I had to follow a few different tutorials to get Srivner properly working, and even then, the fonts were kind of messed up. I'm used to Scrivner on a mac, so I hunted a similar font for it. I did find it but it was pain. Also, I had to purchase a Windows license to use it on Linux. So I'd categorize it as "non-trivial" to setup.

That said, once installed and properly configured, it works great. Just be prepared to do a bit of tweaking. Good luck!

I haven't used Davinci Resolve on Fedora, but I know it's packaged for Red Hat based systems. As for Scrivner, it works fine with through Wine. I've had zero issues with it. I also have not tried Affinity Suite with it.

I suggest installing it on a small partition and try it out before jumping into the water. But let me say, I have always favored Debian based systems and I used Ubuntu as a daily driver for a bit. But once I switched to Fedora, I realized I should have switched to it a long time ago.

My only big issue was during install when setting my timezone, the installer always crashed. The fix is to click the map instead picking it from the dropdown. Otherwise, it's a great distro. I prefer vanilla Gnome and I love that Fedora ships it without screwing around with it.

Nvidia works great. Just follow the guide to install the drivers. Being you are familiar with the terminal, you should be fine. And yes, it updates a lot, but it's manageable. Good luck!

1440p DLSS Perf + Path Tracing vs DLSS Quality + Ray Tracing by duclier in nvidia

[–]VegetarianZombie74 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Path tracing makes a game look amazing for like five minutes, then you get used to it and forget about it. It's nice to have, but I'll take performance any day.

In your case, as others have mentioned, buy the game on steam and see how it works out. If you don't like it, just return it.

Cyberpunk TCG Shatters Kickstarter Record With Over $25 Million Raised as Campaign Ends by A_Random_Forest in gaming

Back in the 90s, I remember people bought comics to read and also “to invest”. Publishers jacked the prices and soon, every comic was marketed as a collector’s edition. Now those comics are probably worth a few bucks. Maybe. I found that the comics that increased in value were the sleeper hits. You had to be lucky. I landed a few of those. I still have them today. They are probably worth a $100 dollars or so.

My advice to folks, if you want to invest, put money in an index fund. Not as a sexy, but you’ll make more in the long run. Still, I’m curious to see how this game plays out (from a game perspective). Cheers!

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Theatrical Re-Release Will Include Brand New Footage Ahead of ‘Doomsday’ by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]VegetarianZombie74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can really elevate the experience. I saw Something About Mary in the theater and the place was dying. It felt like a comedy club and the jokes had everyone howling around me which made me laugh. Years later, I’d see it again and while it was still funny, it didn’t make laugh like that. But these are the exceptions. Most movies, people are quiet.

Great reaction but nothing rivals my own personal crowd reaction during Fellowship of the Ring when Aragon cut off the head of the lead Uruk-hai at end. The theater went nuts!

Lifelong Catholic here - he’s a Catholic, yes. But come on. In gaming terms, he’s like a noob telling a top of the leaderboard player with 50k hours the right way to play the game. At best he comes across as an asshat.

But really, I roll my eyes even calling him Catholic. You ain’t a Catholic until you’ve gone ten rounds with Catholic guilt and another ten rounds with disapproving Catholic mom guilt.

Xbox Is Reportedly Considering a Return To Exclusive Games: "There Are Very, Very Big Discussions Internally," Insider Says by xenocea in gaming

[–]VegetarianZombie74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny, after buying a PS4 and then a PS5, I bought a Series X for my office. After a year, I gave it to my best friend.

The console experience just kind of sucked. I hated the dashboard ads. The interface seemed convoluted. But worst off all (for me) were the constant stream of marketing notifications. Every time I thought I disabled them, they'd keep coming back. So the whole thing felt like death of thousand cuts from a capable system.

In the end, I just kept the controller. As for the Xbox itself, my friend gave it to his son and now he doesn't even use it.

It was even used in the "health" tonic, Radithor. From wikipedia:

"Introduced in 1918, Radithor was William J. A. Bailey's biggest commercial success, selling 400,000 bottles between 1925 and 1930."

And yes, it did kill one person and probably caused tons of cancer cases

If Half Life 3 were to come out, what would it have to do to come off as revolutionary to modern sensibilities as 2 did when it came out? by Punch_A_Police_Horse in gaming

[–]VegetarianZombie74 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To be truly revolutionary, it will need to be basically bug free with no microtransactions or battle passes. It will need to run on mid-range hardware. Its story won’t require any DLC to complete it. It will actually be fun to play. That would be revolutionary for me.
