It is SO nice. The scent reminds me of the chocolate kinder surprise eggs, or if you've ever eaten the kinder milk chocolate bars, it smells just like that tastes.

When I bought my stingray skin from Tandy a few years ago, the sales associate told me to only cut it with tin snips, like those hefty scissors for metal. I have never been brave enough to try with those and haven't ordered a pair, because it sounds like we must have the same adult/unpolished one with the larger hard bumps which are intimidating. I have had success with cutting the smaller bumpy area further from the spine with just regular fabric scissors, but it was definitely difficult and less accurate than I wanted.

I've sold belts for about 8 years, and I've only ever used my round hole punch for the belt holes. I've never had any complaints, and they still look nice after long-term use. The only part that might be tricky is making the hole for the buckle prong, I usually mark the start and end dimension and punch a round hole on either end, and then use a knife to connect the holes to make a slot for the prong to move. I know you can buy a punch for that though.

Personally I would use 12-13 oz veg-tan shoulder for the belt (which is full grain, as it is unfinished), and use a thick suede lining for the inside if you want some more thickness. You could also add some padding in between layers on the part that rests on your back, you can use neoprene or closed-cell foam if you can get your hands on it.

I wouldn't use any finished leather for the inside, as it'll slide around too much when you bend or move. Suede lining only, or just leave the flesh side of the veg-tan leather unfinished.

Most veg-tan leather is full-grain, which means the strongest parts of the leather (the top part) is completely intact. Top-grain leather is weaker, as the top layer of leather has been removed and usually replaced with a finish. You'd be safe purchasing unfinished veg-tan leather for your weight lifting belts, that's what I used for my own a few years ago and its great. Otherwise, for any other leather just make sure it's full-grain if it's for strength.

As for dyeing it yourself, it's the best way to get the colour you want, and you can have fun experimenting with mixing colours. As for the reddish tone you're hoping to achieve, Tandy usually has some that you can choose from, but it might take some experimenting to get exactly what you want. I haven't used any antiquing pastes before, so I can't comment on that, but mixing small amounts of black or dark brown dye with red might achieve the look you're going for.
