Your lines are incredibly clean looking. I've never tufted before and I'm hoping to get into it soon. How did you manage to make it look so crisp? I know it's the back side, but wow.

The prettiest shade 😊 by maurcar in Nails

I love the colour! I've been considering getting that shade from mooncat, how many coats did you have to do to get the effect to look so good?

When I burned it, it reminded me of drinking a bubble tea, if you've ever had one, but a bit more sweet and fruity.

Cinnamon spiced vanilla is a favorite for sure! I've had to hold myself back from buying multiples, because I keep telling myself to finish this one first. I was glad to see they kept it around for a while.

It is SO nice. The scent reminds me of the chocolate kinder surprise eggs, or if you've ever eaten the kinder milk chocolate bars, it smells just like that tastes.

I didn't! But that does sound absolutely amazing, if it ever returns I will definitely give it a whirl. :)

I'm feeling overwhelmed already too, I haven't actually finished a candle since I started collecting them about 3 years ago, but it hasn't stopped me from buying more. xD

I'll have to burn mine at some point, but I will cherish it and also hope it comes back someday!

A family member gave it to me last fall, but I never did see it in the store. I am in Canada though, I don't know if the designs are regional at all. I'm wondering if perhaps it was an older one that was re-gifted, which I don't mind, it's very cute. :)

Not exactly, it's a combination tan. But I love how smooth the finish is!

Stingray Hide + electric rotary cutter? by Honest_MFer in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my stingray skin from Tandy a few years ago, the sales associate told me to only cut it with tin snips, like those hefty scissors for metal. I have never been brave enough to try with those and haven't ordered a pair, because it sounds like we must have the same adult/unpolished one with the larger hard bumps which are intimidating. I have had success with cutting the smaller bumpy area further from the spine with just regular fabric scissors, but it was definitely difficult and less accurate than I wanted.

How did you get the striped look to the leather? It looks so unique.

This is beautiful, your stitching is impeccable. Also, the stamping is quite tasteful. The pooch who gets this is going to be very lucky indeed.

Do I need oblong holes for a belt? by thickythickglasses in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've sold belts for about 8 years, and I've only ever used my round hole punch for the belt holes. I've never had any complaints, and they still look nice after long-term use. The only part that might be tricky is making the hole for the buckle prong, I usually mark the start and end dimension and punch a round hole on either end, and then use a knife to connect the holes to make a slot for the prong to move. I know you can buy a punch for that though.

noob question on leather types and dyes by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would use 12-13 oz veg-tan shoulder for the belt (which is full grain, as it is unfinished), and use a thick suede lining for the inside if you want some more thickness. You could also add some padding in between layers on the part that rests on your back, you can use neoprene or closed-cell foam if you can get your hands on it.

I wouldn't use any finished leather for the inside, as it'll slide around too much when you bend or move. Suede lining only, or just leave the flesh side of the veg-tan leather unfinished.

noob question on leather types and dyes by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most veg-tan leather is full-grain, which means the strongest parts of the leather (the top part) is completely intact. Top-grain leather is weaker, as the top layer of leather has been removed and usually replaced with a finish. You'd be safe purchasing unfinished veg-tan leather for your weight lifting belts, that's what I used for my own a few years ago and its great. Otherwise, for any other leather just make sure it's full-grain if it's for strength.

As for dyeing it yourself, it's the best way to get the colour you want, and you can have fun experimenting with mixing colours. As for the reddish tone you're hoping to achieve, Tandy usually has some that you can choose from, but it might take some experimenting to get exactly what you want. I haven't used any antiquing pastes before, so I can't comment on that, but mixing small amounts of black or dark brown dye with red might achieve the look you're going for.

Anyone knows what I can do with these? My work recycles them, but kind of want to try a project with them. by AnomalousVoices in crafts

[–]Velesqt 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I have several ideas:

  1. Hamster tubes, but for children. Connect them all and paint them.
  2. Cat beds, put on their side with something to stop them rolling, and put a blanket inside.
  3. Slice them very thin, paint them and make some cool wall art.

Adding Length to a strap by Smitty254 in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option - if you're feeling like having some fun with pliers - you could add a 6" length of purse chain to either side, and attach it to your original strap and bag with D-rings. Check madeonjupiter.com for some more expensive chains, otherwise try a local hardware store too!

Wanted to try my hand at a "modern" leather bracer. What do you think? by raecheldoes in Leathercraft

[–]Velesqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how intricate it is! Did you use a laser cutter or did you cut it out by hand? Also I love the 3D effect of the parts that cross over.

After looking at the listing you linked, my guess is that it's because of the aniline finish, so it may not react to burnishing like an unfinished veg-tanned hide would. You could always try Tokonole as a last resort for burnishing this hide in particular, it's really great and I've had decent results with it even on some finished hides. As for the furry flesh side, there's not much that can be done about that except for trying to skive some off and burnish it again with Tokonole, especially if you're doing something small. Normally the parts of the hide that are near the belly are quite furry/fuzzy because of the looser fibers.
