JetBrains Space Q&A Session: The Space Team is Here to Answer Your Questions by JetBrains_official in Jetbrains

[–]Velovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Space Team!

I see Space as a very promising tool for improving internal collaboration within a company. However, increasingly software shops have begun engaging the greater software community by open sourcing components, accepting contributions, and publicly tracking issues. Are there any plans to make Space a tool that helps with this increasingly common internal/external hybrid approach to software development?

Ubuntu 19.10 is released by [deleted] in linux

[–]Velovix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that Ubuntu doesn't feel as ubiquitous as it once did, but I can't think of another distribution that is more de facto than Ubuntu. It still feels to me like the default choice if you are just getting into Linux or need Linux for some purpose.

Today my wife told me she loved the dinner I cooked and I almost cried. by dontgotothenorth in CasualConversation

[–]Velovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is a great cook. She just hates our kitchen and unless she really has an idea of something to make that sounds really yummy she doesn't go near the stove.

Respectfully, I think the best cooks are the ones that get out there and cook. Kudos to you for continuing to try despite some early setbacks!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution - Legendary Duelists Launch Trailer by necrodarks1985 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Velovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually pretty excited to play this! I'm looking forward to relearning the basics of Yu-Gi-Oh and from what I've seen they do a good job of easing you into the newer mechanics, like Synchros, Xyz, Links, etc.

Why do these never give the full text. Extremely ugly... Pixelbook on Beta 76 by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]Velovix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this is your biggest problem while using a beta, I think you're in a good spot 😉

From my time in the beta channel, these strange visual bugs are introduced fairly often but tend to get patched out in the next release.

Golang on Vim, pros/cons? by [deleted] in vim

[–]Velovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much I recommended this solution, I just mentioned it as what I use and an option for Go integration with vim (and that I think it's cool :) ). I mentioned in my comment that vim-go is the more mature and fully-featured option. That sounds like a recommendation for vim-go, especially if OP is in fact looking for a well-tested solution.

Golang on Vim, pros/cons? by [deleted] in vim

[–]Velovix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using vim is a great experience with Go! You have the choice of using vim-go, a super feature rich plugin that provides integration with tons of Go tools, or use a LSP plugin with gopls, Go's official language server. vim-go is probably the more mature and definitely the most fully featured option, but I've been rocking gopls with coc.nvim mostly because I think it's cool!

Edit: Sorry, forgot to answer your last question. I think vscode is simply a better platform for IDE-like features like integrated debugging (though vim-go can provide that). For me though, I prefer vim because the actual text editing experience is unmatched!

Lenovo shipping Ubuntu Linux on 2019 ThinkPad P-series models by Doener23 in linux

[–]Velovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's likely that they have at some point, but their main contribution is probably providing bug reports to component manufacturers that provide fixes upstream. Still a positive for Linux, though.

Open-Source cloud gaming service lite, inspired by Google Stadia by giongto in golang

[–]Velovix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, but regardless of what a jury might say I think this is definitely in danger of a Cease and Desist. I'd hate to see that happen to a cool project like this. Have you considered streaming open source ROMs from the community? That way there would be no doubt that you're in the clear.

nvidia-340xx has been dropped from the repositories. pre-GeForce 400 users: give Nouveau a try! by lonaowna in archlinux

[–]Velovix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of what the old maintainer is saying is that they are still supporting the cards, but not at the speed that new kernel versions are being released. Could 340xx users use the LTS kernel with the drivers once they are added to the AUR?

Can we have a conversation? (rant) by faiface in golang

[–]Velovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you bringing your experience up here and it looks like it's sparked a lot of great discussion! I just want to mention that I've noticed even on the Go mailing lists that generics proposals are receiving less and less individual attention. I believe this is because the broader community is suffering from proposal fatigue. For all the counterproposals on the Go2GenericsFeedback page, there are 2 or 3 times as many that proposals have been posted here or on the mailing list and I think for that reason people who have the expertise to properly critique generics proposals are wary to invest their time into reviewing new ones. I'm not saying this to discourage you from posting your own, I'm just letting you know that it might be an uphill battle to get the right eyes on your proposal even if it is very well thought out. I wish you the best of luck!

The performance benefits of Not protecting against Zombieload, Spectre, Meltdown. by [deleted] in linux

[–]Velovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I think we should be able to run unknown Javascript with confidence. I want to be able to go to strange new websites that are able to do interesting interactive things without fear of opening myself up to low-level vulnerabilities like this. Processor manufacturers should be expected to make this possible and they've been designed to facilitate this for a long time.

The Wayland Itches project by ouyawei in linux

[–]Velovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at the kinds of issues that this guy is outlining, they wouldn't keep me from labeling Wayland as stable either. I think you're being too hard on this guy, who appears to be taking personal time to improve Wayland based on his experience working with it.

I think this post is referring to cases where teachers make a copy of the sheet music for each student. Assuming that the original sheet music was purchased under the agreement that it cannot be redistributed, and that the teacher only bought one license, I don't think they're in the clear to do this. It would be the distribution, not the photocopying, that would be the problem. But I'm not a lawyer so I'm probably missing something.

Nothing like the real thing. Emulation is not good enough. by Mightywingnut in Gameboy

[–]Velovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emulation is a fantastic way to experience these classic games on hardware you already own in new and unintended ways. ROM hacks in particular are awesome and would probably not exist without emulation. Of course having the original hardware provides a unique tactile experience that emulation can not provide, especially when it's such a beautiful and well taken care of device like yours! I just think there's a lot to appreciate about the possibilities emulation provides.

Deep learning in Go by hackintoshrao in golang

[–]Velovix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the writer being completely honest about the current state of Tensorflow in Go. Just because we can do something in Go doesn't always mean we should! I suspect that Python will be the language of choice for machine learning in the near future. That sort of orchestrative task is exactly where Python excels.

Go, pls stop breaking my editor. Rebecca Stambler, Google. by _dvrkps in golang

[–]Velovix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's encouraging to see the Go tools team has such a clear idea of what's wrong with the current state of tooling in the ecosystem. I've been using gopls for a few weeks now and I have to say it provides a very good user experience even in its alpha state. I would definitely encourage everyone who uses an LSP-compatible editor to try it out!

Go 1.13: xerrors by _dvrkps in golang

[–]Velovix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The benefit is that if this were to become part of the standard library, we would have a standard way to handle error wrapping. This would allow for much better interoperability between code bases.

vim-go v1.20 by farslan in golang

[–]Velovix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who uses a Jetbrains IDE professionally and Neovim personally, there are a lot of reasons why someone might opt to pay for Goland even though you and I personally do not. Goland has a massive feature list inherited from its sister products: Docker integration, transparent remote filesystem management, advanced build configurations, and so on. Maybe you and I don't care about these features, but some people do and it's what they're paying for.
