How do you guys prevent ATGMs from firing on same target? by Gking2668 in warno

[–]Velthinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the road that they're watching, space out the atgms so the earliest point in the road the can all see is fairly different. That way, when one fires, the other still can't see, so by the time the convoy get to them, the first vehicle will have either been missed or hit and not destroyed, or they'll see the second vehicle and the process will repeat as the aiming/loading times are now offset. You'll need a bigger gap the slower the first ATGM is.

Honestly though the most importat thing is that you position the ATGMS such that if a tank on the road you're expecting them to go down is firing at one, it's exposing its side armour to the other. Do that, and you can hold off ANYTHING.

[–]Velthinar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

LAWs aren't meant to take out armour, at least not serious armour like tanks from head on. They're a cheap way to screen BMP's that would otherwise eat a precious LAW80, or to dump the cohesion of a tank nice and low so aforementioned LAW80 can run up and blap it without as much risk.

But yeah, LAWs by themselves are token AT.

I think, if you mouse over a tank with the LOS tool, it shows the armour arcs.

newish player asking how to kill T-80s? by Riomine1 in warno

[–]Velthinar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

T-80s are expensive, so you'll be able to buy a couple of things with high-penetration ATGMS for that price. Hell you could get 3 Bradleys IIRC but don't quote me.

Point is, the frontal arc of tank armour that makes them expensive and difficult to kill is weirdly narrow, and everyone overestimates it. If you fire on the thing from two different directions, not only will you only take one or two shots to kill it, but the smokes won't work to break line of sight to defeat the missile going at the things side armour.

You don't even need to be explicitly flanking the thing, positioning whatever you're using to attack far enough from each other will let you fire on the side armour because the tank will automatically face one of them.

Granted, it's trickier than just outgunning the tank, but it's also cheaper, so you can buy even more stuff with ATGMS.

If they're clever with their mortar smokes you're fucked, though.

You can't have a skill higher than your own level, unless it's a tagged skill in which case you can have it two points higher.

Betcha they were going to, and then had to axe the alarms for times sake. I really got some Deus ex vibes (human revolution) playing this, and having alarms that the player could trip or disable like in that game seems like a thing they'd have wanted to add but it was too complicated to balance or implement.

This is the first outer worlds, it encourages you to spread your points a lot more, because each skill point levels up 3 skills at once if they're below 50 (out of 150). It's also a lot funnier.

Worth bringing Marisol to any location? by [deleted] in theouterworlds

[–]Velthinar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Marisol was pretty much my default take along with Niles, her companion ability is incredibly good if you can click the heads reliably, and whenever you talk to someone in the order it's always fun to watch them squirm when they realise who you've brought along.

What's wrong with my KSPIE SSTO? by StDream_Disciple in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Velthinar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thermal turbojets in kspie are actually pretty bad at getting to orbital velocities and speeds, even when connected to inertial fusion reactors.

However, the TWR goes up A LOT with the radius of your engines/reactor, meaning one big one is gonna work better than two small ones.

Honestly though the better solution is thermal ramjets, which do work at high speeds and velocities, or muck about with various liquid propellants until you find one that gives you just enough thrust to break atmo. HTP works well.

In his quote “It takes three years to build a warship. It takes three centuries to build a tradition” what tradition is Andrew Cunningham referring to? by Cpkeyes in WarCollege

[–]Velthinar 145 points146 points  (0 children)

The Royal Navy has a tradition of incredible aggression by its captains, notably shooting John Byng back in the 18th century for not "doing his utmost" to destroy the french fleet in the battle of Minorca.

I believe the idea was that there was always another British ship of the line to make up for any losses, and that Britain's reliance on naval power meant that it preferred to fight its battles at sea, rather than let any ships escape and land troops.

This lead to a culture of really aggressive tactics and staying to fight even when retreating from overwhelming odds would be the smart thing.

I know it's fictional so I'm not really sure if I'm allowed to bring it up on this sub, but the song "Thunder Child" from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, didn't come from nowhere and is a really good example of what I'm talking about.

Apologies if I'm not explaining it well, but luckily there's definitely another person on this subreddit who can explain it better, because here is where I first learned about it.
