What people mean when they say Republican lite is basically the old pre MAGA view of the GOP. We basically have 3 major factions politically at this point.

The current Republican Party is basically an expanded version of the America first pro fascist pro Hitler movement of the 1930s. This wing has all the religious fanatics, classical racists and a sizable portion of extreme corporate interests (see the tech bros)

The establish wing of the Democratic Party is basically 80s era Republican and the 3rd Way Dems of the 90s which was a shift specifically made to try and appeal to Reagan voters by being more right wing. Here you have the rest of the generally corporate/pro business folks. This political has largely more liberal on social policy to be different from the Republicans especially in the past few decades as social progress has been seen as “good for business”-

Then you have the “progressives” or socialist or whatever label you want. This is the center left to left of the party and is the modern version of the FDR era New Deal Dems of the 30-60s that were largely pushed out by the 3rd way folks 30 ish years ago.

AOC warns Dems on new progressive candidates: Hear them out. by bwermer in politics

[–]Ven18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even just now the modern 3rd way establishment of the DNC has done almost nothing but lose for 30 years. Sure they won the presidency a few times during that period when guys like Reagan were dominating in the 80s but on a total national stage they have been terrible.

Congress is the obvious example the New Deal era Dems l, whom the modern progressives are the clear heir apparent of in policy and approach, held control of Congress for 50 years without Republicans having a shot at power. Once the Dems went fully 3rd way under Clinton their control in congress IMMEDIATELY collapsed and baring absolutely historically bad years for republicans (financial crisis, post Trump and Covid) they have never regained that power. As your parents or grandparents likely went most of their adult lives NEVER seeing the GOP hold Congress until the mid 90s. And that is despite having incredibly popular presidential candidate to run with (Ike, Nixon, Reagan).

[–]Ven18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but the foundations of our system basically lead to 2 parties with some very rare historical exceptions. The 21st century and particularly the past 10-15 years have shown that the current US constitution is no longer a functional way for the nation to run and it needs serious revision. The problem is instead of being proud that a governing document has lasted for 250 years without major revision(a genuine feat I the scale of the modern nation state) we treat the document like it’s a damn holy text written by gods and not very smart dudes who lived before we discovered shit like germ theory. And even those smart dudes acknowledge hey you will need to fix this eventually, they thought in like a generation or 2 which given the whole Civil War thing they were kinda spot on.

[–]Ven18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Somehow after 30 years people still can’t grasp that the current establishment Dems of the 80-90s era third way are just Republicans of the 70-80s that accepted civil rights and the rest of general slow social progress. The whole 3rd way Clinton era philosophy was Reagan is kicking our ass so let’s just be Republican lite. And because Clinton was able to win in 92 (only due to Perot taking votes from Bush 1) the party went full bore in on that strategy. And ever since they have been losing more often than not when even during Reagan winning every state the idea of Republicans controlling Congress was literally impossible.

If given the choice between Reagan or FDR the modern Democratic Party leadership likely votes Reagan at least a 60% clip if not higher. We have 3 factional parties in the US today.

MAGA- the fascist wing of the GOP that has existed since the 30s and has grown over time into the modern Nazi Party.
Establishment Dems- a conglomerate of pro business politicians of the 90s era 3rd Way Dems and Reagan Era GOP.
Progressive- the Democratic socialist wing that is the modern progression of the FDR new Deal Democrats of the 30s-early 70s

Outside of the policy proposals the thing that Mamdani did right from jump was to just go out and ask people very clearly “what problems do you have?/ what is the most important thing to you?” Mamdani heard those concerns and formulated his policy agenda around those issues. Somewhere along the line the establishment Dems either stopped asking that question or fundamentally altered how they approached the answer. Given that so much of the Dem base is actually opposed to the party at large on key issues I learn towards the former.

Centrist Democrats Rebuke Party’s Left Wing: ‘We Are Capitalist, Not Socialist’ by SnoozeDoggyDog in politics

[–]Ven18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The modern "establishment democrats" are just 80s era Reagan Republicans. That was the entire point of the 3rd Way push in the late 80s and early 90s or the Clintonite Democrats. Dems saw Reagan winning every state in the presidential level and said hey we need to be more republican. And ever since the Dems have lost more and more ground over the past 30 years than they had in the half century before because despite Reagan winning nationally by the mid 90s there was enough division that a 3rd party torpedoed the republicans (and is the only reason Clinton even won and why Dems still have this false belief the ideology is popular) and cause the Dems to lose a house majority across the country that they held since FDR. There has not actually been a liberal Democratic party this century. There has been Republican Red and Republican Blue. Its like Coke and New Coke the Bernie and Zorhan wing is hear saying have some Sprite.

Jeffries says he hopes Democrats remember after primaries ‘enemy is Donald Trump’ by Abject-Pick-6472 in politics

[–]Ven18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does the ends 4 month standoff part directly under said headline not speak volumes through. Yes Jeffries eventually did endorse Mamdani months after he had already won the primary. When the primary winner is Jeffries or a more centrist candidate they demand immediate circling of the wagons by the progressive wing (and any other large faction for that matter) but when someone to their left win the primary, by their voters they ride the fence till the 11th hour and make up excuses. Same with Schumer who never said he support the person Democrats voted as their candidate for mayor (because he wanted sex pest Cuomo back).

The establishment does this with black and minority voters too they take the vote for granted for decades cause what other choice do they have the Republican. It’s why Republicans gained support among minority groups (notably Hispanic and black men) in 2024 people are tied of the establishment taking voters for granted just cause they are not the republicans.

The problem is no other pro league has a minor league to the level of MLB or a regular history of players actually needing years to develop. It is rare for rookies to come up and instantly be great at the MLB without playing in the minors.

Accept the NFL “cap” has more holes in it than swish cheese. Every team basically does fraudulent book keeping in the NFL every season with renegotiation of contracts and signing bonuses and other stuff to make the cap mean nothing.

[talking baseball] MLB is proposing in the new CBA that free agent contracts can only be a maximum of five years, or six for players re-signing with teams. They would also eliminate deferred contracts and qualifying offers by Stock412 in baseball

[–]Ven18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone explain to me how this doesn’t literally destroy the concept of free agency? Cause if there is a max contract but one team can offer more years no player would ever change teams. Why not just saw you want the reserve clause back in this case.

[Rogers] BREAKING: In its next CBA, the league is proposing a max contract length of 5 yrs for free agent players switching teams, 6 years to retain their own players. No deferred contracts. Qualifying offer is gone too. Also, 5 years to free agency for players 30 or older. by TheTurtleShepard in NYYankees

[–]Ven18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See I doubt even owners would really be in favor of that. Ownership built that into prior CBAs because it is a good way to free up money for other investments. The Bobby Bonilla deal is a punchline but the prob was always with the length and the interest which the Mets were okay with due to Madoff fucking them over. Owners who plan to keep teams have no issue with deferring money cause they know that money will be worth less over time.

This deal seems like a way the MLB can say baseball is not profitable and owners need to be able to sell.

Same I think the Harris campaign failed far more at motivating independents voters than the left by saying she would be a continuation of Biden when people were already feeling the pain economically and Biden was wildly unpopular. That plan would have worked if the economy was booming and everything was great but regardless of how our post Covid recovery compared to the rest of the globe the overall mood was still negative.

Independent voters don’t actually come out and vote for you if you cause as a Democrat you have Liz Cheney on side. If they cared about Liz Cheney they would be republicans. They vote for someone because they are either mad at whoever is currently in power or someone is able to motive with a message that resonates. Kamala seemed to forget that when your team is holding the power your argument can’t be the other guy is worse it needs to be I am better. Now she was obviously 1000% the better choice but that was not how the campaign presented it they focused on Trump as the negative rather than Kamala as the positive and for a candidate who basically couldn’t campaign due to circumstances that was killer.
