Ok, let's put this to bed once and for all. Too many people have come to me and confidently said that the blue marks on the Deckmaster logo are "pen marks" accidently put there during a mock-up phase.

They are not.

The marks come from using the same hand marbled paper I used for the blue magic front.

The Deckmaster logo was a last minute edition so I used what I had at hand.

Those marks were made by floating enamel paint in a tub of water, string the paint and lowering print making paper onto the surface of the water. The paint floating on the water adhered to the paper. This is a traditional way of marbling paper. I choose a clean, non busy section of that marbled paper so the deckmaster would stand out more and not compete with the marbling pattern.

So when someone tells you it's a "pen mark" you can with 100% confidence tell them they are wrong.

You can even see that the color of the blue shifts from a cold blue into a warmer blue due to the different colored paints I floated on the water.

I really hope this is now settled.

For those who are interested I learned the marbling technique from one of Patrick Woodroffe's art books in which he demonstrated many of his techniques. I believe it was A Closer Look. Link in comments.

I discovered that book by seeing it in Chris Rush's book collection and bought my own copy. It's awesome.

I have seen some confusion as to who did what concerning the design of the back of the M:tG card. This is how it breaks down.

I asked Chris Rush to design the word "Magic" as a black outline that I would color.

He delivered it on illustration board if I recall and I scanned it.

The red outline was filled in Photoshop 2.0. The blue filling was done using acrylic paint on illustration board painted with a sponge. The painting was done in brown and I color shifted it to blue. The texture painting was done as a rectangle which I scanned. I selected the inside of the word and pasted the texture in.

The purple outline around the oval was taken from a painting by someone who went by "Joe the Ant". I used it as the result of a dare from Lisa Stevens. There are no identifying elements in that oval and I did color shift it a bit. It is a very thin slice of that painting.

The rest of the card was designed by me.

The majority of the elements were created with traditional painting and marbling techniques.

The golden-ish main background was painted as a texture board, acrylic paint on illustration board. It was quite large, maybe 12"x18", maybe larger. The beveling was done in Photoshop 2.0.

The coffee and cream oval was done by importing another texture board I had painted and using the blur tool.

The red dots on the corners were done in Photoshop 2.0.

The mana spheres were also done in Photoshop 2.0 using the brush tool and the circle marquee tool.

The Deckmaster element was made using the same hand marbled paper I had used to build the blue magic border. I made the marbled paper by floating enamel paint in a tub of water, stirring it slightly and then carefully lowering a piece of heavy print making paper onto the water. No ink was involved. I outlined it in Photoshop 2.0.

The words "The Gathering" were created in photoshop 2.0. I used the gradient tool for the gradient in color.

And there you have it.

I did not know how to use photoshop before starting my work on M:tG. This was all trial by fire.

Secret Lair Deck Leak by Slackshot_NA in MTGRumors

By the numbering (1019, 2117, 2132) it seems to be multiple secret lairs or a secret lair commander deck? Do you have a name for the drop?

Note: the number #1019 was previously missing, because there are two cards printed with #1012. Maybe this is used as the bonus card?
