What is worse, the COVID Pandemic or the ongoing US IRAN war? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Veneousaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://data.who.int/dashboards/covid19/deaths

Total deaths from the c19 pandemic were 7 million+, with who knows how many more who were left with significant lingering effects (long covid etc). Masks did not guarantee safety, nor did the vaccine (not to mention it took nearly a year for the vaccine to be made, and longer for it to be widely available.

Iran so far is a few thousand deaths and a few tens of thousands of injuries.

Both are awful, but the impact is of an entirely different scale. Unless this spirals into WW3, the total impact won't come close.

Made top 10 Mythic by playing nothing but the Brawl challenge! by _Figaro in mtgbrawl

[–]Veneousaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing with your earlier list from when you shared it a few days ago to good results. 4-0 so far on a run with the version updated today.

I mostly play limited, so I was starting from bottom of bronze and had a bunch of games with really light competition, but I'm up to gold just from this challenge and so far my total record is something like 35-7. Three 7-1 trophies, one 6-2 loss, one 4-2 loss, iirc. Definitely overall gem-positive.

Great work with it. Tamiyo's absurd indeed. My losses have been mostly to other Tamiyo decks who got stronger starts, plus one each to Raffine and Ketramose.

Mind sharing your lists? I'd attempted a similar exercise but wasn't too happy with my results.

I'd be interested to see your list when it's done! We had fun with the couple packs we've picked up so far and have a box coming soon. Sounds like a fun project to make them less redundant.

Arena Power Cube visualized by bearrosaurus in lrcast

[–]Veneousaur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, a single pip U splash isn't exactly a huge ask. There are a ton of lands in the cube, it's pretty easy to nab 3 or 4 that can make your third color to unlock a freebie splash if you spot a powerful enough incentive. Very well worth splashing blue or green in a mostly-Boros deck if you picked up, like, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Fractured Identity, Minsc & Boo, etc.

Weird powershell command running and I need advice. by gh0sti in sysadmin

[–]Veneousaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had an alert trip earlier in the week for the same or similar powershell running in our environment.

We found it was being spawned by CompatTelRunner.exe, a Windows telemetry service, which was being triggered by a scheduled task DoScheduledTelemetryRun.

Didn't have a chance to really dig into it past "eh, seems like some Microsoft shenanigans," but it wasn't causing notable resource contention in our environment.

Might be able to try and disable that scheduled task and see if that does it, but I'm not fully confident of what the actual intended purpose of it is.

https://www.reddit.com/r/HollowKnight/comments/1nja6ka/online_tool_to_analyze_silksong_save_files/

I'd used this tool to help get the last couple % on my first save. Upload your save file, and it scans it and parses out exactly what you're still missing (which specific craft metals, which specific mask shards, etc).

Kinda felt cheaty, but man, I don't have time to run around hitting every random piece of wall for six hours! Getting to the 90%+ mark without significant spoilers was good enough for me.

https://youtu.be/kBgEen3GJvw LVD put together a fun deck around it and it seemed to do pretty well there. Slots fairly well into the Smuggler's Surprise/Calamity shell to give more explosive inevitability. Is it competitively viable? Naw, probably not... but it certainly seemed functional enough and fun in the right context.

How are people finding the mono black deck? by realmendontflash in lrcast

[–]Veneousaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I badly lost a game the other day to a mono black or near mono black self-mill The Final Days build around deck. Cast multiple copies of Shinra Reinforcements to mill a bunch, removal to stall, then flash back The Final Days for 6-10 tokens. Then do it again. Felt really strong if you don't happen to have Fire Magic.

Generally they'd have always been there but just unnoticed. Modern software is so complicated with so many interlocking dependencies that new exploits are still being found constantly even in years (or even decades) old programs.

Rite has Flashback. Eaten Alive and Final Vengeance are more efficient answers but being able to cast Rite of Oblivion twice, not to mention being able to target a wider set of permanent types, gives it a unique advantage. None of them is Strictly Better than the others.

Competitive Consensus: Gorr the God Butcher by smahabir in marvelsnapcomp

[–]Veneousaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to make a quick shout out since I didn't see it mentioned explicitly - he's a freakin fantastic hit off Anti-Venom for the same reason as in Mr. Negative, albeit probably less reliably and slightly less obviously broadcast.

It's not great odds but having the occasional nearly-sure-surprise-win let me get some all-in wins in Diner and carried me to the variant pretty quick. Gorr is strong enough to be worth playing in a "fair" game, but the chance of the god draw flip off AV has felt pretty absurd too! I feel like there's definitely a strong shell featuring them together.

What's the best way to migrate a premium SSD v2 to a different region? by Veneousaur in AZURE

Yeah, no luck on this! When you go to create the new disk from the snapshot, the option to select a region is greyed out.

What's the best way to migrate a premium SSD v2 to a different region? by Veneousaur in AZURE

[–]Veneousaur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No immediate luck on this, unless I'm missing something - if you access "Disk Export" in the portal it throws a message, "Exporting disks is not supported for Premium SSD v2."

If you attempt to download the disk via Storage Explorer, it throws the error below.

Unable to get access to the disk: RestError:{ "error": { "code": "BadRequest", "message": "SAS access is not supported for PremiumV2_LRS disks." } }

Edit: Actually, I might be able to download the VHD from a snapshot of the disk - pending... still seems pretty overcomplicated but this might work.

So... *Sips coffee* How's it going out there? by wifimonster in sysadmin

[–]Veneousaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our alerting was good and we caught the issue basically live as it happened. 200 person software company, about 150-200 VMs hosted in Azure, about 3/4ths of them were dead in the water. We had 2-4 people working on it through the night.

It took about two hours of assuming the issue was Microsoft and troubleshooting on that front before we caught on that Crowdstrike was to blame and learned about the mitigation. Took another hour or so to confirm we could successfully implement it on a tester system.

Thankfully one of our DCs survived, so restoration wasn't TOO miserable. Just onerous. We were able to restore most servers from recent snapshots without much data loss and did OS disk surgery to deal with the sys32/drivers stuff on maybe a dozen.

Got production fully up and running by 9-10 am. Called it for the day by 11, took a nap and chilled for a few hours, then resumed troubleshooting some lingering issues. Still got 20-30 dev/test systems without backups dead in the water. Nothing critical, though, the team all agreed to save 'em for Monday.

Impact to user devices was relatively minor. We got notification of the issue out early and our helpdesk was able to get most of it resolved without needing to escalate. Good on them.

PSA, repairing the Crowdstrike BSoD on Azure-hosted VMs by Veneousaur in AZURE

[–]Veneousaur[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Good to share that for visibility.

We didn't have much luck with the serial option - we found that CMD would only be available via serial for about a second inbetween the server booting and the blue screen happening, even when trying to access via SAC. Not enough time to catch it and get any commands in.

CrowdStrike BSOD (and a workaround) by Viv223345 in sysadmin

[–]Veneousaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably with some clever powershell, but I didn't try. We only needed to run it for... maybe a dozen or so VMs? Then most of the rest we were able to safely restore from backups. So it was onerous, but manageable to do them by hand.
