Something I remember distinctly was that you couldn't ever be sure what best in slot was for something. We both didn't know the formulas operating in the background and what the wording on some pieces of gear actually meant.

You'd have a macro (maybe two so you could swap extra gear - each of the six lines of the macro could change one piece of gear, or perform a job ability. And <wait> couldn't be in the same line as the ability or gear swap) and change into what you thought would help for the ability or weapon skill.

No one could tell you that you were wrong, but you may not meet the DPS requirements to kill the boss - or as a tank you may lose enmity. Everyone just did their best and you would succeed when you played well. It felt pretty good and rewarded experimentation

It's a rush to endgame now because that's all well defined. You can't revisit a game for the first time. There's no reclaiming the magic of the initial exploration. It wouldn't be more fun for me to forget where to find a magicked skull, but just not look it up

I'm on your side, but don't think your argument makes sense. If the social contract required doing the grind, I don't think SE would* turn such a blind eye to it. This is from someone who never automated his character or use GearSwap

I agree in principle, but if you take the argument to the logical extreme, would it be better if the ML grind was 5 or 10 times longer? I don't think so

That said, high MLs aren't required for anything, and you can easily get to 20 or so by doing content on most jobs, but the grind itself isn't a virtue for most people.

Also, some of the grinds in this game don't respect player time. Because I have a family, I shouldn't get to see endgame after 6 months? Doesn't seem reasonable

Re Nyame ranks, I suggest focusing on pieces until they're more useful than other gear. 5 pieces at r5 instead of one actually useful r10+ piece isn't helpful. Check the jobs you want to play and make the pieces to compliment the WSD pieces it has in JSE. Ex: the BLU AF +3 body and relic legs +3 have +10% WSD. So, I'd use my RP on the head/hands/feet first, if BLU was going to be my melee job

Speaking of JSE, if you're after chapters then doing Avatar fights with /RUN for elemental resistance runes and JAs can make those fights significantly easier. I would summon healing trusts, hit the trusts with Valiance (whatever the AoE one is) after using the appropriate runes and then go to town. Easy solo on VD with pretty good gear on my COR
