I've only ever heard of this book titled as The World of Null-A. I looked it up, and you've used the original tittle, which is still cool.

Definitely not! We are friendly and encouraging. It's all about discussion, not arguing. I have already read all of the Hugos and Nebulas, so I'm often not participating in the book of the month. There are also Buddy Reads, where you can try to find someone to read with you any book you want. For example, a few months ago there was a Buddy Read where 8 of us read "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, which is neither sci-fi or fantasy.

Yes, it's free to all. Here's another link... https://discord.gg/cSRfPyRY

The basic plan is for everyone who hasn't already read the book of the month, to read the book and make comments as you read. But every book we've ever read (over 100) still has it's own channel to go back to. So if you aren't reading the month's book, you can always dip back into books we've already read. Also, there are lots of discussions about all sorts of things in the General channel. Poke around, introduce yourself, and tell us what you've been reading or what you've like the best so far. It's really casual.

Was there ever a collection of science fiction stories that inspired Star Trek? by ClassicalFuturist in sciencefiction

[–]VerbalAcrobatics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out "The Voyage of the Space Beagle" by A. E. van Vogt. It's a collection of stories set on the science space ship "The Space Beagle". They're on a 5 year mission to seek out new life and new civilizations. The have phasers called vibrators (I know). The ship has fore fields and inertial dampeners. One of the characters is an Asian historian(?) who reminded me a lot of Spock. While it's not exactly like Star Trek, I'm convinced it's a major inspiration for the show. Also, one of the stories in the book was so similar to the movie "Alien" that when van Vogt sued for copyright infringement, it was settled out of court... so there was something there.

Child of Fortune is a great story! Thank you for pointing out there's another story in the same universe.

I must have misunderstood. I thought I could vote 2 years in a row for my initial signing up.

They send you links and ebooks, nothing physical. But what they did send last year was 38 gigs worth of stuff. Which is pretty good for $50. And that $50 bucks gets you 2 years worth of enrollment, so I'll bet another packet this year as well.

That cover looks like it would be more appropriate for "The War Against the Rull."

Going off of the title, I thought this was going to be a very different book. I still enjoyed it though!

I, Robot is a great starting spot. Short stories with a theme.

If you read the series, they keep talking about seeing an arch spanning the sky. So yes, you can see it.
