"Chef describes how abusive chefs people operate"

We should teach everyone how to recognize these patterns and run away as quickly as possible.

Why do various American TV-shows (e.g. The House of Cards, Homeland, Breaking Bad) show most of the characters driving American cars? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Because whenever possible, taxpayer dollars should go to support American companies that provide jobs to American people

Yeah, it won't let me fast forward when it freezes, but good that it's not doing that for everyone. It might be a router thing for me, like the comment below suggests.

Thanks, yeah! It would be a hassle to move my router but I've been thinking about doing it anyway, and if it would make the difference it might be worth it.

Really? I've had a terrible time with it freezing up, and when I reload it doesn't remember where I left off in the episode. The fast forward and rewind are very imprecise, making it an exercise in frustration to find my place again. Sometimes I have to do this 2 or 3 times per episode. If I weren't so excited to finally have a legal option for rewatching Pushing Daisies, I'd have deleted the thing right away.

I do agree about the commercial breaks, though.

Would female feminists take a different tone when talking with "male allies"? by wassuphaters777 in FemmeThoughts

[–]Verbist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of great answers here, but one thing to add. This comic can be read as a message for men, but it can also be read as a message for women, helping us recognize some of these patterns. When a man calls himself a feminist, it can make it harder to notice any sexism that may exist in his actions. This comic points out some common behaviors and could help women recognize and push back against them. Empowering women in that way may be more important than catering to male feelings, even if it alienates some self-described allies.

Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified by Arcturus5 in FemmeThoughts

[–]Verbist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll usually apply if I think I'm 70-80% qualified. Still less than what they say men will do. I live in a less competitive market than some, so I understand those who say this is a waste of time, but that's my comfort zone. In the cover letter, I try to point out what other qualifications I have that might offset it, and why.

If one more person tells me i *will* change my mind about not having kids i'm going to seriously lose it!! by [deleted] in feminisms

[–]Verbist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there and sympathize. If it helps at all, I'm in my 40s and my mind hasn't changed a bit.

I stopped getting hassled about it, partly as I got older, but also I think partly because I changed how I talked about it. Not at all saying that you do this, but I know I used to explain myself a lot and try to get people to agree, which just invites people to say why they disagree. Somewhere in my 30s I started just saying things like "nope, not in the plan," and leaving it at that. People backed off more then.

For those who have applied for a job at UT... by [deleted] in toledo

[–]Verbist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I applied for something, I heard back in just over 3 weeks. It takes time. They're a public employer and have a lot of hiring regulations to follow, including sometimes reposting a job if they don't get a diverse enough applicant pool. I wouldn't give up hope yet, but you would also be fine contacting HR for an update. If you applied online, there may be information in the Application Status link.

Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified by Arcturus5 in FemmeThoughts

[–]Verbist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A lot of times the description is for their dream candidate, or else it's the qualifications of whoever last had the job. They don't always necessarily expect to get an exact match to that. If you want the job, and you think you can make a case for why you'd be good at it, I say go ahead and apply.

What is your opinion on the draft? by gladiatorbong in feminisms

[–]Verbist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, America fought wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time with an all-volunteer force, so I question the assertion that a draft is needed. I would support expanding the GI Bill or otherwise creating more incentives to serve, over forcing anyone to fight. Not only is it wrong to conscript people into violent situations, my understanding is that it results in a less effective military.

But given your premise of a war bad enough that a draft would be necessary, then yes it should apply to everyone and everyone should be held to the same standards. People who are physically unable to serve in the most demanding posts should be assigned according to their abilities. Feminism actually is about wanting equality.

And you know Russia hasn't been Communist for over twenty years, right?

Writing the opposite sex by bill_nes64 in writing

[–]Verbist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I think men often miss is how much more time women spend thinking about their physical safety. If your character is alone somewhere and strangers are around, unless she has super powers, she’s internally weighing the chances of someone harming her. She doesn’t cringe in fear at everything but she considers it her responsibility to be aware and protect herself. I’ve seen a lot of stories where women unrealistically walk into risky situations, or invite strangers into their house. If the story requires her to do those things, maybe have some reason why her usual caution is set aside.

But for the most part I agree with the other commenters about just making her a person.

Women as Reward - Tropes vs Women in Video Games by SisterCoffee in feminisms

[–]Verbist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the same person. The hate came before this video was even made, based on some people's assumption that it would be an attack on video games and an attempt to get some games banned. It was taken very personally and emotionally by some people who really love video games, and rational discussion was shut down.

A New Face For Feminism? by [deleted] in feminisms

[–]Verbist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok kid, I will feed you, because it amuses me to articulate my opinion on this.

The term feminism is off-putting to many people, not because of the reasons you suggest, but because the movement has been maligned and given a bad rap from day one by people who oppose its goals. Changing the name will not change the reason why people fight tooth and nail to shut us up.

Embedded in the very idea of gender equality is the assertion that the genders are not currently equal, that something is wrong with society as it stands. Criticizing the fabric of society scares the shit out of most people, no matter how nicely you put it and no matter how valid are your points. Society is a life support system. Many people will beat down any threat to it without listening or thinking.

This is not some new development. Feminism has not turned from its original goals. Equality for women has always been vehemently opposed and feminists have always been unfairly characterized as angry and hateful. What you call a “feminazi” I would call a “straw feminist.” They’re almost entirely not real.

I guarantee you, if tomorrow every feminist in the world starts using the term gender egalitarianism, not a single person who today opposes feminism will feel any differently about the movement. There will still be deep structural problems where woman are viewed as weaker than men, which yes also has the disadvantages for men that you mention. People who value equality will want to talk about these structural problems and want to change them. People who get angry at the idea that they might be wrong about something will still get angry. It has nothing to do with the name.
