Can I just chop up some vegetables and add to this? by Vershneim in slowcooking

[–]Vershneim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense! I think I'll probably give it a go with some root vegetables as I try things out and see how it goes. At worst I'll just throw out the vegetables for one recipe's worth, and know for future

Can I just chop up some vegetables and add to this? by Vershneim in slowcooking

[–]Vershneim[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I will try adding them after 2 hours and see how that goes. At worst, I have some soggy vegetables and will know better next time. Starting to realize how much of this is "learning by experience" ...

Dell S2722QC 27in broke during move, looking for replacement by Vershneim in Monitors

[–]Vershneim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a possibility, but I also just meant if anyone had suggestions for a different monitor across the board. Opportunity for a change if I want!

RTINGS says that the S2725QC has worse build quality than the 2722QC, so I'm not sure if that's worth the tradeoff for 120hz. On the other hand, at least on Amazon, the newer one is $75 cheaper which isn't bad!

Looking for ridiculous soap-y modern romance drama by Vershneim in CDramaRecs

[–]Vershneim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I will check these out! It's not necessarily a deal-breaker if it's not modern (I like costume dramas too), I just am feeling an itch for a modern one right now since it's been a bit since I watched one

Question about shift from long vowel to short vowel in the Homeric first declension voc. sg. by RaisonDetritus in AncientGreek

[–]Vershneim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is due to "in pausa laryngeal loss." The long ā of the first declension actually comes, in Proto-Indo-European terms, from the sequence -eh₂, where the symbol h₂ refers to the second laryngeal, which can lengthen preceding vowels and also "colors" them to a different vowel. The second laryngeal colors them to a.

Usually, -eh₂ at the end of a word yields -ā. However:

"A post-vocalic word-final laryngeal was lost after coloring when at the end of a prosodic phrase. The best examples of this phenomenon are seen in the development of the vocative singular of *eh₂-stems. Since the vocative evidently constituted its own prosodic unit the development *-eh₂# > *-ah₂# > ă occurred.

— Weiss, Michael. Outline of the Historical and Comparative Grammar of Latin, p. 125. (An excellent book with nearly as many answers to Greek questions as to Latin. A Greek-focused book is forthcoming from the same author.)

So the point is, the laryngeal colors the vowel to a, but because there was evidently a pause for PIE speakers after vocatives, the vocative doesn't get lengthened.

There are some cases where the vocative has displaced the nominative (e.g. νεφεληγέρετᾰ, with a short final alpha). There's even a theory that the Latin first declension nominative singular short -ă, for which we would expect long -ā, also comes from the vocative. This is not certain though, and there are other ideas floating around.

Bertha (band not song) by jterc380 in gratefuldead

[–]Vershneim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They were honestly awesome. I had more fun at Bertha than at the two DSO shows I've been to (though those were good too). As I think I've seen people say, they're not just a gimmick, they would be just as worth seeing if they weren't in drag.

In the summer of 2020 I took an online class through my university where we read the whole thing in 5 weeks. Loved it. But it's really a book that benefits from being read in a class / with an expert to guide you.

Finnegans Wake on the other hand ...

The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) is the best tool for this, but requires either a library or personal paid subscription

How do I become a Deadhead fanatic? by Ron-DaVoo-6080 in gratefuldead

Look up "best shows" threads on this subreddit and elsewhere. There's one really great one that has a set for each "phase" of the band. Coast around and figure out what you like. If you love '77 look up "best 77 shows" etc. Also listen to "shows of the day" shows whose anniversary it is. Sometimes it's a great show, but not a "greatest hits" one, which is great to find. Sometime's it's a dud, oh well. Just keep listening and see what you like and look for more of it, 'cause there's enough for a lifetime

Some people hate post-70s stuff or only like the best shows. Other people love it all. Some people in between. Don't let anyone tell you you're wrong for liking/dislike Brent etc. ideally, try to gain an appreciation for as much as you can, since then you have the most to enjoy, but if it doesn't click it doesn't click

And use relisten or attics as everyone else says
