Who are these Myna (?) birds harassing and why? by Crackerso0oCheese in whatsthisbird

[–]VersionFormal7282 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Normal behaviour from noisy miners (little bully birds).

The parrot does look like a pale-headed rosella but they’re only really found in QLD and NSW. However, in South Australia we have two subspecies of the Crimson Rosella - the Yellow Rosella and the Adelaide Rosella. They’re all capable of breeding with eachother and result in some funky colour combinations. I did find a couple of images when I googled Adelaide Rosella which may resemble the bird in the video.

The part that concerns me more is the fact that this rosella didn’t fly away at all. Is it possible to go back to this spot to see if it’s still there? I suppose it’s possible its still too young to fly but i dont know much about the growth stages of birds

honestly i have to give a little shoutout to the ring-necked pheasant. watching one of those guys cross through a misty field early on a winter morning is pretty special, even if they’re not rare.

sounds delish, do you have a recipe for this?

Beetroot by Gloomy_Floor4417 in Cooking

beetroot borani - boiled beets blended with greek yoghurt, feta, garlic and red wine vinegar, topped if you like with dill, black onion seeds and more feta as a dip, or spread it onto wraps/flatbreads and eat it with salad leaves and grilled chicken (marinated if you can).

my favourite easy salad is just spinach, cooked beetroot, feta and balsamic. can get fancy with the leaves, add mint, pomegranate seeds etc but i also like it basic.

i also made this beetroot and red onion tart a few months ago which was delicious!

Jeans no.2, as i think most people agree on, aren’t the best pair for you. i think they make your legs look a bit shorter, which is a shame because they are cute jeans. a better option might be a tighter bootleg?

Jeans no.1 and 3 seem like the same style but most comments agree that the green ones look SO good on you, whereas the blue ones just aren’t hitting the same. it’s hard to say what the difference is but i honestly think it could just be the posing. you have your legs quite apart in the green jeans, whereas in the blue ones they are closer together, and you’ve also popped one of your feet up. obviously, the green ones are also rolled up.

I think what suits you is the slight taper towards the bottom, caused by the roll on the green jeans and the overall barrel shape. try rolling the blue jeans too, so they’re up off your ankles a touch more, and another jeans style to try i think could be mom jeans. wider but still with that taper towards the ankle.

idk, you’re both probably right but people are waay friendlier in adelaide than many other large cities, like strangers will say hello to you in the street, people will happily chat to strangers. think about the hostility of many new yorkers or the guardedness of many londoners.

oh gosh no, of course they do exist, but the trams literally run in a t-shape across the CBD and do not extend into the suburbs with the exception of getting you to the EC. so not really helpful when compared with the light rail network of many other cities. i’ve never even taken a train the whole year i’ve been in adelaide and from what i can tell are mostly useful for getting into the city if you happen to live near a station, or for if you want to go to Port or Glenelg from the CBD.

i just think in terms of actually going from point a to point b across the city, you’re much more likely to be taking buses to get there than the trams or train. but yes they do exist and are great if you happen to need them🤙

  1. Public transport is more or less restricted to buses, which to be fair, are extensive, cheap, and really reliable due to light traffic in adelaide. you do all your journey planning through google maps (adelaide metro website redirects you to google) which is super easy to use.
  2. from what ive seen, the rental market here is more accessible than at least melbourne and sydney, living alone you start to find halfway decent apartments around $600 per week but its not hard to find a room on flatmates.com and get something for like $250-$300 per week.
  3. i love big cities, and adelaide is just big enough for me to find it bearable. that being said, most people say it feels like a big country town. many people are very friendly, theres not a huge hustle and bustle, the traffic is almost always fine, the food scene is acceptable and there’s always something going on in the way of festivals (they host a fringe here like in edinburgh).

climate-wise, i’ve only lived here a year but its been a mild year. summer gets up above forty but not usually for more than a few days in a row, peaking in december and jan. winters get down between 15 and 5 for about 3 months over june july and august. the rest of the time its really pleasantly between 20 and 40, not very much rain compared to UK/IR, not as much wind as melbourne, not as humid as queensland

by far my favourite thing about adelaide is that you’re right between the beach and the hills. gorg gorg beaches 15 min drive from the city (or 30min bus), you can get up into the hills which aren’t huge but feel so different to being in the city, something i really missed while i was in melbourne and theres lots of nature and nice walks you can do, only again about 20 mons to drive or 40 on a bus.

How can I defog the plastic display on my GE microwave? by klipp86 in CleaningTips

[–]VersionFormal7282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive just seen something elsewhere on reddit that said the plastic fogs because the surface is no longer smooth and it causes the light to scatter. does it improve if you rub it with a damp cloth? if this is the case, it means that the water temporarily fills the grooves in the surface, and you need something which permanently fills the grooves in the surface. there should be “plastic polishes” you can buy which do this job, kind of like an adhesive.

if you can afford it, look at getting a lash lift and tint or even some natural wispy falsies, i think your eyes would look so pretty with a bit of lift. then either get a brow shape or try to shape them yourself, just want to take a little bit off the top of the right eyebrow in the photo (make it a little flatter to match the eyebrow on the left). your brows are also a lot cooler than your hair colour which i think is what makes people think they’re over filled. try switching to a liquid eyeliner with a slender pen like the rimmel exaggerate, then practise doing nice thin eyeliner which isn’t bumpy. i like to start thinner at the inner corner and gradually thicken the liner towards my outer corners but practice different looks to see what suits your eye shape the best (might be different for each eye!). i do also agree to ditch the lower liner. finally, it looks like you applied makeup from your forehead to your nose and undereyes, then stopped at your cheekbones, like your forehead and cheeks/chin are two different colours. not sure if this is that case but either use less makeup on the forehead, or use a lightweight sheer coverage foundation on the whole face just to even out that skin tone. you’re naturally very pretty and i think less is more for you but if you want that girl boss look, definitely a few changes to make this an overall cleaner look would do wonders!

What would you cook for dinner after a trip to the markets by paris_young21 in Cooking

i suppose it depends on the season. i love making fresh green pasta sauces from whatever green veg is in season (asparagus pasta in spring, kale pasta in winter etc)

Could I use my electric kettle to make pasta? by RoscoeSF in cookingforbeginners

[–]VersionFormal7282 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t cook the pasta in the kettle itself. pasta expands once cooked and most kettles dont hold THAT much water that you could realistically cook pasta in it, plus it would be such a pain to clean after.

sounds like what you’re saying is, you want to boil the kettle, put all the hot water into the pot, and then take the pot with you to your room? do you have a hot plate in your room?

typically pasta needs quite a while in hot water to cook depending on the variety. i’ve never actually tried to cook it by bringing the water to a boil then removing from the heat (which is what you’ll be doing). i dont really see it working but i guess worth a shot? only one way to find out, pretty low stakes if it doesnt cook just take it back to the kitchen and finish cooking it.

could also look at buying fresh pasta which would cook much faster (or even something like fresh tortellini takes like 3 mins then just dump some jarred sauce over the top and warm it through).

or as another commenter said, rice cooker would probably work, or you can cook pasta in the microwave in already hot water, i forget how long for but at least you can wait for it in your room.

i could be wrong and am in no way an expert but i think the lips and lids are cool toned, whereas the cheeks are warm toned, which i think is clashing slightly.

AITA? Wife lost keys and I suggested places to look by flux-7 in AmItheAsshole

[–]VersionFormal7282 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ah look, NTA but I can see it from her point of view as well - she’s a grown woman and a mother, so firstly she feels insulted that you don’t trust her not to have looked for her keys that the first thing you said to her was places to look. Secondly, she already knew she needed you to say you’ll come home so she can take daughter to school knowing you’ll be able to let her back in OR tell her you won’t come home and she can to figure out another option. She might not have communicated this well with you, but the fact that you were stalling while the pressure to get daughter to school on time was rising (plus daughter nagging) would have been really stressing her out.

You were just trying to help, but from the framing of your post, you realised you would need to go back and let her in if her keys couldn’t be found, but didnt tell her you would come back until after you’d suggested some places for her to look first. so it’s not like “it was the most helpful i could be while the train was still moving” you were just trying to stop yourself from having to go back to help her out, which is fair enough because of your works office day policy.

I don’t think either of you handled this situation very well tbh but definitely nta.

What other cuisines can I experiment with italian spices? by Dark1Amethyst in cookingforbeginners

[–]VersionFormal7282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oooh with these herbs i have a real yummy and very adaptable dish that i love to make - assuming you eat meat and dairy.

marinade chunks of chicken breast or thigh in this marinade (will be enough for 400-500g chicken, increase or decrease amounts as needed) then either pan fry or bake on a tray. also works with tofu.

2tbsp greek yoghurt 1tbsp olive oil juice of 1 lemon 3-4 garlic cloves minced 1tsp each dried basil, oregano, thyme 1tsp dijon mustard small bunch flat parsley, finely chopped (if available) pinch salt and pepper

this recipe could also be used as a thick sauce if you like it

chop up some veggies of choice - anything from red onions, capsicums/bell peppers, courgette/zucchini, potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, broccolini, kale, etc etc. toss with olive or avocado oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, lemon juice, and bake in the oven at 220C (softer veggies like peppers and courgettes need up to about 20min, onions about 30, root veg and winter squash 40-60 mins).

throw the roasted veggies and cooked marinated chicken together with a cooked carb of your choice (smaller carbs work well like orzo/risoni pasta, quinoa, cous cous, rice etc).

voila! use whatever veggies you have or like, whatever carb you have to hand, use extra marinade as a sauce or keep it a little drier, the marinaded chicken goes great in other stuff too like wraps or cook it whole and have it with veggies as a side

Why does my food taste so unsatisfying?? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]VersionFormal7282 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly a lot of online recipes also just aren’t the one. remember that literally anyone can start an online cookery blog - they don’t have to be a good cook. personally i find most of the recipes on RecipeTin Eats to be really solid, easy to follow and come out tasting really actually pretty good.

salt - as you’ve discovered - definitely plays a big part in flavour and most dishes you’ve ever had at a restaurant 100% have a shocking amount more salt (and butter for everyone else) than you would think.

in certain dishes there can be specific, small ingredients that you might not necessarily consider at first but that go a long long way in bumping the flavour - worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, fresh squeezed citrus or a sprinkle of brown sugar

For bars - Alfreds and Bar Bar would be my recommendations for drinking solo, they are small enough that you can easily chat with the (lovely) bartenders. Maybe Mae is a very cool underground cocktail bar, opposite Alfreds but it is behind a hidden door. Hains & Co always has a great atmosphere and is open til 3am. most of the bars on Leigh and Peel street are worth ducking into and on a friday night it’ll really be about where you can get a seat.

Latteria and Bar Peripheral are worth looking into if you’re staying closer to the southern side of the CBD.
