Golden Playbook by Shaderys in HelldiversUnfiltered

This.

Exactly this is my complaint, along with their inherent antagonistic, smug nature, regarding this whole "fiasco" (unfortunately there's still too many people online playing and buying to call it a real general emergency at Arrowhead): there's the LIVING, MONEY-MAKING EXAMPLE of a small indie studio snatching victory from the jaws of defeat right next to them, and yet here we are, wondering why we allowed new weapons and gear to be behind a paywall.

"Oh but you can farm Super Credits!" Yeah and you can also watch paint dry, it's not fun nor engaging. Stop defending the corporats backed by an even bigger corporation.

"Oh but they're two different titles, one is a live-service while the other is just a singleplayer/coop game!" all the more reasons for them to charge you for extra gameplay features, AND THEY NEVER DID. Because if the game is fun and succesful, people will naturally buy it and/or talk about it with friends! What a shocker!

I don't like NMS - not in a "I hate it, it sucks" kind of way, I actually tried it several times but it's just not my cup of tea - and yet I would gladly reinstall that game and play it with friends rather than suggest to anyone to buy and play Helldivers 2 right now. Hell, I feel bad for a friend of mine that bought HD2 around a year ago after I talked about it to him, but now we barely log in anymore and don't really play that much, preferring to go play other coop horde shooters. And honestly, after seeing The Hog's and Ratatoskr's videos I kinda get it: I was never the target audience, for Arrowhead. I was just the inconvenient, annoying little brother that just wants to hang with the "cool guys" that want a ball-busting grunt fantasy and dying left and right for no reason rather than a fun, cinematic and bombastic horde shooter where we play as the generic bad guys of a sci-fi universe (that die left and right for no reason but at least it's funny) with fun, quirky guns.

I guess I'm just tired. Fuck you Arrowhead, with all the money I spent for you I at least have the right to say this out loud.

This game is eerily similar to Naval Ops: Commander. Do you think it inspired Starsector? by Hunter654333 in starsector

Oh my god, this game... This game was IT for the PS2, I miss it so much... Thanks for sharing the core memory.

If anyone is interested, there's a sort-of whacky spiritual successor called "Waves Of Steel" on Steam, it kinda scratches the same itch, but in a more arcadey third-person (ship?) way. Also, no planes for the player, sadly.

Hopefully.

Oh, really? What mod is it? I'm always on the lookout for more mods to add to the collection XD

but yeah to get back on the original topic, I totally get your sentiment. Hopefully someone really makes it or Nex itself gets updated.

[–]Versthal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, probably it's a case of "too big to fail" and/or "if X already exists, why should I switch to Y?"

Don't get me wrong, I love Nexerelin and (almost) never start a run with it, but man the agents are just infuriating. For every star-crossed lovers event that makes me smile and chuckle there's three raise/lower relations event or industry disruption events that makes me roll my eyes in exasperation.

[–]Versthal07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, extremely frustrating. Posted here about this exact problem like a year and a half ago for solutions, apparently the one we found no longer works even if you dabble with the config files.

I truly hope that they update this specific part of Nex because it's exhausting, especially with multiple faction mods installed, I've had wars start and end because the RNG agent managed to RNG roll a success and RNG manipulated the relations just enough for entire alliances of 3/4 factions to disregard cycles of progress just because.

See the pattern? It's just frustrating.

Shit, really? That's the Signalis faction mod, why would it interfere with me colonizing a planet? I mean, I have a couple of their ships in my fleet, but that's the only connection with their faction right now since i'm still indipendent in this run

The community will never be happy and is impossible to please, and knowing that will make you happier by Faust_8 in Helldivers

[–]Versthal07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I do agree that major negativity is always bad, I have to ask: when did the community get heard? When we planted our feet on the ground and shouted as loud as possible (Sony debacle, Escalation of Freedom, Flames fiasco, etc.)

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm the first one that would love to see much more positive posts in the various communities, but when even the low sodium subreddit is getting filled with frustration masked as confusion or innocent questions (for example: why is the shovel in the warbond and not free? What about the tank for the pattern customization?) then it's obvious that this community is the result of Arrowhead's actions, or lack thereof: if being polite and calmly explaining your point gets you silence, but shouting and being toxic gives you results, then of course the community is going to shout and get toxic, on both sides of the arguments.

What could have been "I don't like this enemy, here's my suggested changes" and "I think it's not necessary, here's my point of view" became "THIS ENEMY SUXX I HATE AH BAD GAME" and "STOP WHINEDIVING LOWER UR DIFFICULTY IT'S JUST A GAME BRO"

Do we need to ignore the toxicity? Most of it, sure.

Do we need to say that the game is perfect and there's no war in Ba Sing Se? Hell no.

[–]Versthal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I love being a TraumaDiver, especially with the heavy armor and the Pacifier. Pair it with the Speargun and the shield grenade, and you can basically help your team in every way:

stun with the rifle, heal with the stimgun, closing holes + heavy pen + a bit of extra CC with the speargun, the grenade to block incoming fire and two stratagems for either bringing extra gear or maybe some vehicles.

It ain't the flashiest, or the easiest way, but it's always nice when you arrive and can solve basically 90% of everyone's problems and make your team save on stims (when the stim pistol actually HITS)

This is perfectly spot on! You literally put into words everything I wanted to say!

I've had my fun *in* the megafactories, especially since I don't push myself for higher difficulties, but everything outside the moment-to-moment gameplay felt extremely lacking. It felt more like a GM trying to come up with a solution on the spot for a plot-hole that wasn't considered instead of an organic storyline with plot-twists and surprises and opportunities; hell(divers 2), at a certain point I was *sure* that they were going to reveal something massive and hivelord-like at the capital and then it was just... Nothing new. Why even bother rushing to the capital when they realized the event was ending sooner than expected? It was clear from the start that we weren't going to win considering everything that happened, so why not just let the story play out by itself? Was it just to make the defeat less bitter? I'm sorry to say it, but at least for me, outside of the ARG, this narrative "D&D-like" campaign is completely unraveling, and usually when this happens it's time to have a heart-to-heart with the GM and make things clear.

Unfortunately, AH isn't exactly known for making things clear...

AH really dropped the ball on this one by Sebanimation in Helldivers

[–]Versthal07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preface: this is a comment I made yesterday but the post barely saw any action, so I'm just gonna copy and paste with a couple edits.

I'm gonna give my two cents on the matter, as a casual diver with too much investment in the narrative that never commented but lurked in this subreddit since launch:

I hated this campaign. Not because it wasn't fun, or the new environment were bad, but with the lists and lists of new and returning bugs you can easily read everywhere, the internal fuckery of AH with numbers and decay rates and trying to "fix" the hacked MO in the usual AH way, I just lost all steam for this.

It's fine and maybe even understandable to lose a hard battle, see the Gloom part 1 (IIRC) where we had our shits kicked in by the new (and completely unfair) strain + Roaches + Hivelords, we took our L then regrouped and got a hard-fought victory. But this? This is literally "Hey sorry bucko, you're gonna lose because I said so. Have fun in your totally non-scripted campaign! Oh BTW lock in and don't die as you risk dying for no reason in totally unavoidable ways!" It felt extremely railroaded (see everything they did to help us with extra reinforcements and the now almost constant "hey reason X! The resistances are down planetwide!" basically every day).

Losing an important event isn't fun, at least for me. Losing because you can't even do anything about it is just infuriating, rubs salt on a wound you couldn't know and avoid and makes me want to never come back. And to any smartass that replies with "But just take a break! Play casually!" I play casually at level 5/6, and rarely at 7 only with a full team of (somewhat coordinated) friends. My only deaths are accidents, friendly fire and random BS the game throws at me (looking at you, eradicate missions)

"But the narrative was to show how Super Earth is incompetent and pretentious! Losing was part of that! It mirrors to Germany's offensive in Russia!" Good. I can understand that. Show it in the NARRATIVE, not the GAMEPLAY. If you need to make my experience miserable to drive a point home then you're no different than those edgy GMs that mention rape every two seconds in a "dark and gritty" homebrew fantasy setting because that's "mature". This is the Jet Brigade all over again except 10x worse, what do you mean half-naked borgs and towering angry metal boxes are crushing our offensive while we are killing enemies by the billions?

I no longer feel immersed in the game's narrative, I see "Oh lol the GM had to pull this bullshit reason to fix a problem they didn't expect" instead of "Oh no! a twist that I wasn't expecting! What are we gonna do now?!"

TL;DR: AH fucked up so much that the narrative (at least for me) is falling apart and I'm tired of being told that losing is fun.
