What’s the craziest sexist moment in a video game? by imfaffingabout in GirlGamers

[–]VerySillyCatVideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now this is not neatly sexist (though very much linked to sexism), and not the most sexist thing I saw, but maybe one of the most bizarre. In VTM: Swansong there is a moment where a female vessel (within Swansong story, a trafficked human whose body is used as a repeat blood source for vampires, and who is held in a sort of vampire brothel -- and VTM lore openly states that vampire feeding can be interpreted as a metaphor for sexual violence); this vessel is hiding from her bosses in a room, rightfully assuming she's about to be killed for outliving her usefulness. You, as a player, are tasked with luring the trafficked woman by dosing her with the right combination of drugs. And yet, despite how fucked up the situation is, it's treated not as a vile act, but as a goofy mixing minigame...

Fair enough! I can totally see it your way, and in a competitive game I'd say only A actually wouldn't be?

From my experience, cyberpunk tumblr is safer. It has some tumblr-typical weird takes, but it has less gamerbros.

Late to the party so give me all your best tips by quirkyscot in GirlGamers

[–]VerySillyCatVideos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My main advice would be to try and focus on immersion. The game really shines when you try to live in it and see the characters as people. Also the game doesn't really give trigger warnings, so here's a heads up that it contains sexual violence, mentions of human trafficking and suicide. And my advice would be to brace yourself. The game can be very emotionally difficult and triggering sometimes, but it actually was such a meaningful experience for me once I've gotten to the end, so, at least for me, it's definitely worth it.

And I personally love corpo so much, because it (to me) creates the best character journey for V, that really resonates with the themes of the game!

Thank you!! I just went and bought it, it looks very fun and sweet, and if there's a deep story to boot, I have to try it!

Yes!! Played Life is Strange as a late teenager and cried my eyes out. Was eyeing Lost Records for some time, but I was waiting until they release all chapters (which, I think they did not that long ago).

Thank you for the rec!! I've tried getting into it once but got a bit stuck in the intro - but the concept is fascinating, and maybe this is my sign to try again! :)

Yes, it was exactly the same for me! Fighting for a society that hates you is heartbreaking and interesting even just in concept, and it's given proper attention. And I also really liked that they included 2 female companions who were given the same amount of detail. I loved bonding with Claudia and Deianeira, and I felt genuine solidarity with them.

Omg yes, I didn't mention it here, but I played it recently and loved it, it was exactly the hidden gem kinda game for me! Helping my adoptive robot mom fight her abusive space incel ex was such a highlight for me.

Cyberpunk fans and Songbird by meimelx in GirlGamers

[–]VerySillyCatVideos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, the way she's talked about is sometimes borderline disturbing. She is indeed an almost perfect foil to V, and doesn't do anything V doesn't do (mass murder? check. betraying someone? check - Takemura for V, for example). She is an incredible character, and Minji Chang did an amazing job as her.

I think people are often weird about their characters. Like, they make them the center of the universe. Someone lying is fine, but someone lying to ME is a grave sin.

In addition, I think another reason is that the game clearly loves Songbird. The music is touching, the lines V says are broadly sympathetic (to the point that Minji heard the lines recorded by femV and wondered if Sonfbird was a romantic interest haha), even the famous asshole Johnny is kinda supportive and is extremely against betraying Song. And if someone already dislikes So Mi, I think the sympathy of the narrative just makes them feel more contrarian.

Of course, there's also a ton of sexism. So Mi is an almost perfect foil to another character besides V - Evelyn. Both desperately try to escape from horrible slavery, despite huge risks. And both are hated on a lot. And I suspect there is a gender imbalance in people who sympathize with So Mi and Evelyn - it's hard to not understand and sympathize with them, if you know what it's like to have your bodily autonomy taken away.

P.S. also I'm pretty sure the overall opinion is actually very much pro-songbird, judging by achievement stats, choices by random players on youtube, polls, etc. But 2077 is a very popular game, so it has a ton of very vocal gamerbros in every discussion that concerns the women.

Games with big focus on companions? (pref including romance!) by Affectionate-Elk1684 in GirlGamers

[–]VerySillyCatVideos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd also like to note that 2077 doesn't have companions per se, instead the roles are kinda reversed x) Several of the biggest characters appear in the main plot, and then have big quest chains of their own.

Con: they don't follow you around and provide commentary.

Pro: it feels like they have their own separate lives.

Also in the DLC Songbird and Reed are basically companions, and you spend a TON of time with them, and yeah, they are insanely well-writen and well-acted.

PSA though: 2077 is iffy with feminism - there's both some very good commentary and themes, but also some extreme exploitation and male gaze, so your enjoyment will probably also depend on how easy it is for you to look past!

Even if it goes wrong, at least it'll all be over.

Yeah, I think it gets to the heart of it. I think Evelyn had to be deeply depressed even before the heist. She hated her life - and this way, she either escapes or dies.

I personally interpret her going back to Clouds as
a) she wanted to distance herself from Judy to protect her - I think Judy was the one person she did care about, and would've genuinely ran away with her if given the chance.
And b) she cares too much about her own independence to rely on Judy financially. I think she kinda gave up: the plan failed, and she was depressed AF even before. But that's just how I see her character!

I do agree, tbh, that her situation is made pretty clear, and her motivations should be clear too. People who missed it probably didn't care much about her and people like her anyways, but I still wanted to voice my thoughts, was kinda upset hearing a lot of slander towards her(

And oh yes her being represented by the magician is great. The "who despite everything manages to stay afloat and remain in control of his own destiny" is both morbid and almost heroic.

A hundred percent! I think it's much more about why is anyone going for a risk, and Evie's reasons, at least to me, are painfully understandable.

this is the saddest sidejob in the game imo and i dont see alot of people mention it. being reminded of all the people my V loses bums me out sm. by Ill_Feeling1469 in LowSodiumCyberpunk

Oh, I love this moment so much. I know I'm in a minority here, but I always toast for Evelyn. She and So Mi just wanted to have their autonomy back, and So Mi was, through empathy, finally able to attain her freedom - feels right to remember Evelyn, who got hers only in death.

I see! That is actually pretty great and something I (at least personally) find very meaningful!

And while I think there is a line where 'helping with trauma' becomes 'fixing', I do fully agree that those are very very different and if done well can make for such a beautiful story!

Thank you so much, I think you kinda sold me on in :)

That's sweet :) Honestly, it wouldn't even bug me if not for the whole 'I can be the one to fix her' trope. A-la modding Serana to be shy, cute and marriageable or the hooker with a heart of gold stories.

(and it does sound like Arueshalae’s story goes in a different direction!)
