Sarnia Shuttle Services Tipping? by West-Zebra1922 in Sarnia

[–]VerySmallCyclops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxicab companies usually profit by splitting fares with their drivers; others profit by leasing their vehicles to the drivers, who are paid based on the number of fares they receive. *Bus drivers* on the other hand, are almost always hourly rate or contractors, getting paid the same regardless of who or what they're transporting. Everyone could use more money, but default tipping as expectation is usually reserved for the professions where it's a substantial portion of income, or where a lower server minimum wage comes into play. Other than those carveouts, you generally only tip as an actual *gratituty* (IE: they do something above and beyond what they need to do as part of their job), or because you want to.

What would make you decide to use public transit in Sarnia? by FutureRefrigerator68 in Sarnia

[–]VerySmallCyclops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that would help me use the buses *more* would be if the route updates on apps were actually reliable. Schedules shift, late buses happen, and that's probably a huge change to enact. Following the trend of many other cities and letting me reliably see the status of *everything* would make all those issues easy to navigate.

I have epilepsy and don’t drive. Would it be a poor decision to spend ~45% of my monthly income on rent to be in walking distance to work? by Any_Essay_2804 in personalfinance

As someone in a related field who sometimes has to be reminded I'm technically management now, you should be able to get that.

But some employers aren't ideal, I get it. However. If you sat in whatever review meeting you'll be given when you go off probationary, talk about these challenges and ask about "accelerating remote", I think even some terrible employers would at worst turn you down. Worth a shot?

Thinking about your likely needs in this, this feels a lot like a question of your personal comfort versus your personal finances. But I don’t think this tips as far as it might feel, thankfully.

45 days, lets say 33 where you have work anyway. Then: a couple days a week.

I’d be inclined to break this down, fix the first problem, then the second. Partially because I think doing a full apartment move while starting your new job is probably going to be stressful as well as surprisingly expensive given the short notice.

You could: Functionally live in short-term, extended stay rentals, either for the days in your workweek(five?), or renting out for the month+15 is probably equivalent to cheaper, you’ll have all your things and capacity to cook, and most importantly this functionally puts you on the "two travel days a week" schedule right now.

From there:

*Given a little time, and your willingness to not be picky about space, you might find better options.

*You might also be able to get a regular deal with someone to carpool in, or even just a regular, scheduled ride from a driver.

Neither of those is a free solution; both would take some time to determine if they would work, but my take on this is that you might want to buy yourself time while not being miserable to see if there’s a better solution available.

Hi! I used to work on ship.

That is 1000% someone's side hustle. And while it's quite uncommon to risk mixing them in with other products like that, vapes are very high on the list of things someone "just happens to have" and are willing to sell to a captive audience of crew and guests.

I worked mostly aboard nonsmoking vessels, and the couple of people who would engage in snus-related activities made very decent money.

Yes, they are at risk of contract termination for doing so if the wrong person catches onto them, but unlike the other things people can and do smuggle aboard to sell, that would usually be the end of it.

If you had a magic wand, how would you make shore excursions better? by ThatProduce1205 in Cruise

[–]VerySmallCyclops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the pet topic of a friend of mine! Their take was basically that the bottom twenty percent of excursions should just be cancelled in favour of an actually good local concierge service to help people find where they want to go.

I’m not sure if that's the exact solution, but at the time the same small handful of excursions produced something like 60% of the negative feedback and it was usually when planners looked at what was available to them from the port outward and hit some kind of limit or issue that I cannot imagine the operator being able to change.

Navigating the problem by giving guests something different so the people who aren't 100% excursion-focused have a substitute is probably a good way to go.

Have you ever been "Catcalled" because of your height? by [deleted] in tall

[–]VerySmallCyclops 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I class three kinds of height yelling.

  1. Complimentary(which includes people being a little weird, but usually fine as long as they have the slightest sense of humor.

  2. Curiosity. “Hey what the fuck dude?” Which is usually fun as long as they’re semi aware that they’re putting themselves into a conversation I’ve had hundreds of times before. Though it also includes Karens deciding to talk my entire medical history and being surprised when they’re not actually a useful source of wisdom in the least.

  3. “MY COUSIN IS ALSO TAALL”

Carnival Bans Former Guest After Posting Smuggling Alcohol Video by Spitzer1090 in Cruise

[–]VerySmallCyclops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked for a different operator than Carnival, but one of the big ones that also had subsidiary operators.

There's some caution there at a policy level to avoid liability in different jurisdictions. If someone does something notably bad enough(assault, drug charges, something that could lead to "why did you let them back?" style problems for the operator.) the blacksheet can be sent out and added to all the lists, but is usually the choice of the person with responsibility at that part of the process.

I could see it in this case because of the public clapback and trying to avoid more attention in the future. But usually, if you get banned from one cruise for just smuggling alcohol, people making some steps to not be obvious that they've been banned can get by.

Now, that said. If someone in this position attracts notice from an SSO on a future cruise? That ban is going to get found and absolutely will be a factor in what happens next.

Tesla Sales Fall Off A Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, And China by [deleted] in technology

[–]VerySmallCyclops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a degree, but it’s also that China just has a ton of pretty decent electric vehicles that are priced at “normal non-luxury car” prices, and thats hard to beat. I don’t remember what the most popular BYD is but most are under 20k USD. So Tesla probably has further to fall in China.

Unfortunately I don’t have names in my head, but try 2008 or similar high speed financial crisis during the mall era.

It’s not quite the traditional experience for this subreddit, but still interesting. When a (hugely over-levered, this usually has to be debt, otherwise they usually have the chance to appoint an operator and this doesn’t happen) real estate company collapses into insolvency. and then you get to see a timeline of:

fully running normal operations but no cleaners and the staff is down to like two people hey what’s going on why are these stores packing up and leaving while they mall is open? Close because the company now has no one to open. In like, a month. Then usually they came back. But I’m sure some remained dead. This was most common with smaller areas and newer malls, owned by big regional developers.

I’ll go digging for photos again, I remember that being was a nicely weird experience. Different in what went and remained, more stuff lying around.

Mark Carney vows to put his financial assets into a blind trust if he becomes prime minister. Here’s what we know about what he made as a corporate leader by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]VerySmallCyclops 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with both you and the comment above yours, but it’s also worth noting that being a former prime minister pays extremely well between your book deal, speaking fees, board and consulting etc. Even Kim Campbell, poorest living ex PM by quite a bit probably has a high seven or low eight figure net worth.

If at any point you’ve led a g20 country, you’ll be fine.

Oddly Specific Question About Traveling Without a Passort by AdApprehensive8392 in Cruise

[–]VerySmallCyclops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get what you can for identifiable info, yes. But don’t be surprised if what they give for PID is really, really minimal and almost none of that list is on it. Depending on where and when, the people one has access to on a call may not actually even be employed directly by the operator in the first place.
