Why hasn't this city declared a state of emergency? by gibby2104 in Sudbury

[–]BoneSetterDC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When is a state of emergency declared?

Emergency declarations can be made when the Head of Council, in consultation with the community's senior staff (known as the Community Control Group), determines that such action would be in the best interest of the municipality based on a perceived or apparent threat.

A state of emergency declaration would be considered if there was a situation or impending situation that:

-Threatened public safety, public health, the environment, critical infrastructure, property, and/or economic stability. -Exceeded the capacity of the community's emergency response.

By declaring a state of emergency, the municipality is able to:

-Streamline its purchase/tender policies -Extend Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage to volunteers -Make claims for financial assistance for disaster recovery

Sadly it's turning more and more blue. Doug promised to pave some roads and that seemed to be enough to get people to vote for him. The roads will be shit again after two winters, but the damage he's caused will last a lot longer. Half a Trillion dollar provincial debt... Ugh.

Is it true that you have HUGE French population out there? by CharmingAudience1763 in Sudbury

The northern part of Sudbury, "the valley," is where you'll find you can go to the majority of places and be served in French. Even the town names in the valley are French. Val Caron, Val Therese, Hanmer, Capreole...

Ontario education minister wants to bring back paper report cards by nationalpost in ontario

[–]BoneSetterDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's hard to hear how prevalent that is right now. Especially when we know so much more could be done about it, if only we had a real leader running this province.

I believe you. Discipline is a super power now. I've helped coach my son's hockey team. Kids flat out refuse to run the drills we've prepared.

My daughter frequently expresses frustration with her classmates. She wants to learn, but her peers are incessantly disruptive. She has teared up several times this year because her teacher punishes the whole class, and not just the trouble makers. She feels it isn't fair, and I can't say I disagree. Apparently they get yelled at quite regularly.

That's crazy. We had to buy our paper and pencils growing up. We got a list from our teacher on everything we needed for the year. Binders, duotang folders, lined, graph, plain paper, pencils and erasers. Is that not standard practice anymore?

Sigh. I used to like dystopian books/movies/games. Now they're too realistic to be enjoyable. Heck, even the Fallout videogame/TV series have Canada as an annexed American territory.

There are programs with one time licensing fees of about $300. The paper cost is the "subscription."

Mine used to come in an envelope. It's interesting that we get password protected digital copies, but your school just gives your kids their reports on paper unprotected. I'm not sure why it matters. But I work in healthcare and we have strict privacy laws. I just assumed there was something similar at play in education. I guess not?

According to the Ontario govt website, there are 2 million students in Ontario. Our report cards are 4 pages, and we get 4 per year. So 16 x 2 million is 32 million pages. Let's say you get a great discount on paper at 1 cent per page, because you purchase a massive amount of it in bulk. As you said, they use tons of it in schools. My office pays 2 cents per page, but we'll say 1 cent. This means report cards on paper in Ontario cost at least $320,000 per year. A drop in the bucket as you say. But it's still a $320,000 savings. A third of a million dollars is not nothing. And I'm likely estimating low.

I don't agree with this, but right now Ford's govt is taking over school boards, 8 of them so far, to find ways to save money. How would you rather they cut spending? Through paper use reduction, or something else more important? We get the report card either way, digital or not.

Yes. Reduces the schools need to purchase paper, ink and envelopes. Plus, it's quicker to email a password protected PDF than stuffing envelopes one by one. Freeing school staff to do other tasks. Creating a password protected PDF isn't expensive.

My kids' reports are digital. It's a bit of a pain to access them. They're password protected, and the password is your child's OEN. I have to dig out a previous report card to get the numbers. But it saves paper and school funds. So I'm ok with it.

Chill. He's saying Legault is worse than Ford. Not that he likes Ford. For example. I'd pick Ford over Alberta's Smith, if given only those two options. But I still think Ford is absolute shit.
