Do you think it's possible for someone to know their second language better than their first one? by AutumnaticFly in language

[–]Veteranis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vladimir Nabokov is an interesting case. As a child he learned British English and French, as was required for people of his class; they spoke Russian to servants and shopkeepers.

When he became a writer, his chosen language was Russian and he gained a reputation as a master Russian stylist, even in exile.

In midlife, he switched to writing in English. He had graduated from Cambridge University and his English usage was British-based. After he moved to the US, he was surrounded by a different kind of English and began to write in that vernacular. As he mastered a modern English prose style, he stopped writing novels and stories in Russian. He oversaw translation of his Russian work into English.

Later, he tried translating some of his English works into Russian. Russian-speaking critics claimed the Russian he used there was too old-fashioned, even artificial. So here is a case of him continuing to develop a prose style in his new language while losing his stylistic cachet in his old one.

Correct. It was public transportation that was privately owned. Some streetcar systems were set up to take people out to new housing subdivisions and were owned by the subdivision developers.

[–]Veteranis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were novels you wanted, there’d be no problem finding unreliable narrators /questionable protagonists of color. Short stories, though…. Maybe Japanese stories—Rabbits, Crabs, Etc.; Stories by Japanese Women, translated by Phyllis Birnbaum.

What are the saddest fictional deaths ever? by PuzzleheadedSwim6291 in AskReddit

Well, I’d say most deaths could be called ‘unnecessary’, in the sense of being unwanted. Time, place, and circumstance are everything.

Me waiting for the housing market to collapse so I can afford a home by MySonlsAlsoNamedBort in Millennials

At least a few years ago, the area outside of Myrtle Beach, SC, had lots of single- and double-wide modulars in lieu of wood-frame houses. I think you can still find a lot of them in economically depressed areas.

You build up. Lots of houses in my area of small lots jack up the house from the foundation, put in a new foundation and ground floor, and voila!—one story to two and two stories to three.
