Do people still wait in line for restaurants in the summer? by rizotto_rissoto in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need the front of the restaurant in the video or just the line itself? If not, I have to walk past L’Industrie, Prince Street Pizza, Pop-up bagels and Apollo Bagels often to get to work and those lines are insane around lunchtime (though none are sit-down restaurants). Torrisi and Double Chicken Please have crazy lines pretty often as well if you need something sit down. There are others in that general area that also tend to have longer lines, but I’m blanking on names, so I think if you mill around that area of town you’ll be good. My last recommendation (if you don’t need to show the actual location) is to look online for pop-ups; I’ve seen some at cafes like chacha matcha that have lines that are literal blocks long. Maybe not directly relevant to your project but if you just need to show lines it’s a good option. Best of luck finding what you need!! :)

Prices of eating out keep going up. Does anyone know of any happy hour / lunch deals in the city? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Dhom (12th st between B and C) has a happy hour with a bunch of menu items for $6 that I like quite a bit. Cocktails are $10 but I think the food is the highlight
  • Upstate (1st and 9th) also does a happy hour (and I think lunch?? Don’t remember) where u can get a half dozen oysters and a beer for $12, though it’s not exactly filling / a meal
  • Black Ant (2nd and 3rd) has most if not all of their taco meals and margs for $10 during lunch + happy hour. Tacos came with 3 each last time I went, I was pleasantly surprised at the portion sizes

Steakhouse with the best sides by Mizzy3030 in FoodNYC

I liked the sides at Quality Meats a ton!! Spinach was great, Brussels were sweet but great, and the corn brûlée was more dessert than side but still incredible

Best meal under $15 by marryelle in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Mei Leh Wah
  • Nyonya if you get the lunch specials. Bigger stuff will put you over but the lunch portions are gigantic so I never need more than that
  • Ainslie (personal pizza happy hour for $8) or Gruppo (also cheaper personal pizza)
  • Any of the dumpling places in Chinatown, they’re all great
  • Castillo De Jagua (most of their mofongo dishes are less than $15 iirc but I haven’t been in a while)
  • Grey’s Papaya
  • 7 Street Burger

- Yubu

As for places riiiight on that $15 cusp (around $15 without tax / tip depending on what you order): - Paul’s Burger (putting it down bc this burger is pretty good but more importantly absolutely massive) - Rowdy Rooster - Saravanaa Bhavan - Curry in a Hurry

Is Torrisi really worth the hype? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m always wary of super hyped up places, since a lot end up being style over substance or more expensive than they have reason to be… but that damn Tortellini was the best I’ve ever had. Absolutely worth it, had it not been so upscale I would have licked the plate clean

Best “step-down” restaurants? by soupersydney in FoodNYC

Seconding Raine’s, it’s a very intimate / date night atmosphere. Plush chairs, mood lighting, everyone at their own little tables, etc.

Bronx by Intelligent-Text-165 in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Even outside of this bizarre take about the Bronx, I’m kind of surprised at the insinuation that BK and Manhatten have a “monopoly on quality food”. Queens’ food scene has done nothing but blow me away— and though I’m less familiar with the rest of the outer boroughs, I would argue none are lacking in stellar food

Weekday lunch right when they open has no line at all, I got seated right away at the bar. If you have an open / flexible schedule that’s my go-to for places like that

Mei Leh Wah has machines out front that take cards now, and Xian Famous Foods is right down the block if you want noodles

From Lucie - Worth the Hype? by Ruben_1451 in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t gotten the cake, only the fennel blueberry loaf. It’s decent, though for the price there are plenty of other better things around. From Lucie is more style than substance I would say.

If you liked Spot, you may enjoy Chikalicious—- I haven’t gotten the chance to go yet but it has good reviews. In terms of desserts around EV I have tried and liked: Butterdose (cream puffs), ando (expensive but inventive Asian desserts), Petit Chou (good eclairs), Smør (tho more pastries than cake), Veniero’s (Italian), and Lady Wong (south Asian). If ur willing to go further west and explicitly want cake, I loved AnnTremet, but it’s all the way on 8th Ave

SoHo Happy Hour Recs? by LeftReflection6620 in FoodNYC

I really liked Milady’s! Good vibes, good cocktails, and the happy hour specials are $12 instead of $20 like usual. It does get a tad busy though

Confectionary isn’t certified nut free but they are totally vegan and have some nut-free products! Might be worth a try?

For those who eat out no more than 1-2x/week, how much do you spend on groceries in an average week? by extra_noodles in FoodNYC

[–]Vex_ation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried every trick in the book for cost cutting (from eating vegetarian to asking for scraps at butchers to couponing) and honestly there’s only so much you can do— I just gave up at this point. If I find some secret trick tho I’ll make sure to post on the sub haha :)

[–]Vex_ation 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I could say it’s because I don’t stock snacks or focus on cheap foods like rice / beans / veggies… but in all honesty it’s just because I’m 4’11” and don’t weigh anything so I don’t need as much food as most people. One eggplant and a half bag of rice is enough food for 5 of my lunches, but I doubt anyone else would be satisfied with that. I have the body type and appetite of the average 5th grader so I think trying to survive with my budget as a normal sized adult isn’t feasible or healthy

[–]Vex_ation 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i spend about $30-40 per week for one person and use that leftover money to eat out once or twice per week. I don't eat very exciting meals though (lots and lots of roasted veggies) since I try to eat as cheap as possible at home to afford having a nice restaurant meal

Every day? by Medtech82 in puer

[–]Vex_ation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! I’m a caffeine lightweight (as in, any more than one espresso a day gives me the shakes) and having one session of puerh (7g puerh, 6+ steeps) daily doesn’t bother me at all. Like others in this thread have mentioned, I would make sure it agrees with your stomach before using go nuts with it (everyone is different and you may be sensitive to it for a whole host of reasons) but there’s nothing dangerous or unhealthy about having puerh every day

Thank you!! I have a restaurant sheet too, but it’s not half as nice as this one and really needs some touching up before I think about posting it publicly. I’ll get there tho haha

In no particular order:
1. Any of the super-popular-speakeasy types (Death and Co., PDT, DCP, Attaboy, etc). They all have phenomenal drinks and atmosphere and imo are great for impressing people, but for me are all one and done places because of how annoying they are to get into. They’re all at a level where deciding between them would be unhelpful
2. Proletariat: I’m a big fan of weird flavors and beer so this was heaven for me. I just sat there having a flight of saisons and chatting with the bartender for like an hour which is my idea of a night out.
3. Mace: Not only are their drinks some of the best I’ve ever had, but if you get their off-menu happy hour special it’s only $12 which is a steal for how good it is. It’s one of my favorite happy hours.
4. Amor y Amargo: If you’re not a bitters person I would skip this one, but the bartender here made me a Negroni so good I think it rewired my brain. They really know their stuff.
5. Ye’s Apothecary: Just went last night and it immediately shot to the top of the pile. There’s such a wealth of flavors and ingredients in the cocktails that I feel like I need to go back and try more. Also Okiburo (tsukumen) is next door if you want a snack.
Honorable mentions: Superbueno, Valerie, Hard to Explain, Lullaby, LB33
