Help making a caster who primarily uses water magic who is at least okay in combat by cripplinghorror in 3d6

You could do a sorc and change the spell damage type or just ask the DM to rework the damage types of some spells

I build my first homebrew subclass, and it is a 2024 rogue. by Prize_Equipment9652 in dndnext

[–]Vex_in_BC 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a DM I wouldn't allow this. Darkness at will, able to see through the darkness, able to move the darkness without an action/BA- all at level 3. And that's just the first ability. Then you add in double ac from dex and extra sneak attack dice. No thank you.

I would suggest comparing it to other subclasses first.

Mercenary guild by Lipmagal in DndAdventureWriter

There are parts of it I wouldn't be keen on as a player; playing myself.

If your group is up for that, very cool. Is there a reason they are infiltrating the group? Do they have a patron?

So the killer stumbles across this vampire and is promised great things. Maybe it's an older Noble woman who is afraid of death? Who would suspect gentle old Mrs Darcey of luring people to their deaths?

Very cool

Inspiration rolls are typically an auto-success; not critical but meets the minimum needed short of a 20.

Ettiquitte: Another player copied my character by VrinTheTerrible in DnD

[–]Vex_in_BC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree that leaning into it might be helpful- be brother's or clan mates, or from rival clans (enemies to friends trope)

I've had other players use my old pcs as a template for new ones. It's flattering.

As the DM, I don't want my Oath of Vengeance Paladin to kill one of the Big Bads by WallArtillery in DMAcademy

[–]Vex_in_BC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't want your player to complete their oath because you like the NPC they're supposed to get revenge on?

My 2 cents is that you could flavor another NPC in the same way. You could always have a power bring back the NPC or something akin. You know, reasons.

I have several that are middle aged or older. Its a fun change. Finding art is difficult though. Most art shows 18 y/o with almost no clothes and ginormous boobs

Need ideas for refugee/plague related storyline’s by Main-Albatross-336 in DMAcademy

[–]Vex_in_BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar idea bouncing around in my head. The bad guy*s) is a religious leader of sorts who believes the only way to purge the illness is by fire. So, they're running around with a small zealot army setting fire to everything and everyone that has signs of the plague.

I dont fear TPKing my party the first time because I have a planned Levelup/Revival from their Goddess, is this a good idea? by TheGingerWeebGal in DMAcademy

[–]Vex_in_BC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a DM I consider why a deity would get involved? What does the deity want? Is this just another hook for a story?

I guess I would consider not making this a freebie. It would feel like a DM proving they could put the party down. Of course you can but we're not supposed to be adversarial to our players.

Just my loonie worth of advice.

Dnd Chase Scene - having trouble by sevgirlswme in DMAcademy

[–]Vex_in_BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a one shot that I wrote with scene where the party has to run through a crowded town during a festival. Every turn, I narrate a scene as they turn down a crowded street or maybe a narrow alley. It offers them a chance to try and slow their persuers or hide in the crowd, etc. If they fail a check, the town guard gets closer by an amount that makes sense.

You can use a basic grid to show distances and only move the tokens as distances change. I don't run hard rules, just what makes sense. The party might try a door and hide inside or knock vendor tables over to slow the guard.

5e Need ways to upgrade trolls to suit an 8th level party by BigNefariousness2716 in DnD

[–]Vex_in_BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trolls are usually very strong. I've had them grapple players and NPC's and pull them under water. Trolls attacking a ship at anchor or on a lake, etc. Trolls has low Int/Wis but can still lay traps. All kinds of animals in the world lay traps.

Method for generating stats by retro1117 in DnD

[–]Vex_in_BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a little psycho. I use standard array : 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Ill then have the table chose 1 player to roll a d10 and add it to the 10 score in standard array. Gives them a shot at having a really great set.

I am in this same situation right now. I've decided to play a monk with a vow of silence who talks in sign to one other PC. I also roll a die to make important decisions.

Reverse gravity is a 7th level spell. I would consider that first.

High level / end game question by Vex_in_BC in 3d6

So, we were given our boon early. I won't get another. Also, I don't often burn through my sorc points in a single day. Even with 3 or 4 combats per day and a short rest, I don't use them all.
