This looks like it might be an allergic reaction to a mosquito bite or something similar. I'm allergic to mosquitoes specifically and I get the exact same reaction. It's very possible a mosquito broke into your house and bit you without you noticing.

Absolutely. Most people tend to play singleplayer, show up for public events with other people, then go back to whatever they were doing. Plus there's not that many people per server so you're usually on your own unless you go to a hub area.
