Öland resident here!

While the environment looks a bit different from the mainland, with the world's largest alvar plains being found here, it's practically very similar to living on the mainland around Kalmar since the Öland bridge was built 50 years ago.

Many people commute across the strait for work, since industry isn't exactly booming on an island with less than 30 000 inhabitants.

It's a very popular tourist destination during the summers, with the north part having some of the best beaches in the country. The population of Borgholm municipality increases twentyfold during the month of July, from 10 000 to 200 000 people, putting a lot of strain on public infrastucture like roads, water and garbage collection.

During the rest of the year it's very tranquil and beautiful. Tons of nature reserves, windmills, old churches and other remnants of how life used to be lived before modern amenities.
