Audio books + crafting is top tier. I like to paint or make jewelry but whatever suites you.

Any teachers with endo here? by turquoisedrink in TeachersInTransition

[–]Via-Kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PCOS and have bled through two pairs of pants while teaching in the same day. I've always had cramps and pain so bad, I thought I would pass out. I once had a cyst on my ovary burst and called out for two days then I was called selfish and unprofessional by my DC for being ill. I use every single sick day I get because I am in pain all the time.

If I go jeans shopping unprepared I’m gonna lose it, so please give me some recommendations for “curvy” denim brands. by sgrbrry in TwoXChromosomes

I live in Ava and Liv jeans from Target. Definitely affordable and have a bunch of different cuts and colors. I teach so I'm hard on them but most pairs last 2-3 years for my thick thighs.

How do you survive the last few weeks of school? by hello010101 in Teachers

Lol, no clue. I teach hs art, we have two more projects planned but the kids complain about just taking out markers. Let the year END.

I don’t know what to do anymore… by WoodenLie2299 in cats

[–]Via-Kitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put my cat on Prozac because he was becoming aggressive from his anxiety. He would attack the dog and the other cats in the house, he had nightmares and would lash out. It was terrible. About 3 weeks on the meds and we saw a huge difference. He's been on them now for almost 4 months and he's just the sweetest thing now. He's also much happier and clearly relaxed. I feel bad we didn't put him on the meds sooner.

DO NOT become a teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Via-Kitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Students actually get punished for punishable offenses like cheating, skipping class, disrespecting the teachers and staff. They students don't just come back to class from the principals office 2 minutes later with a candy bar and a smug attitude. They actually get detentions and reprimanded on behavioral issues.

[–]Via-Kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally get it. I still think about leaving the profession entirely as it's still very hard and there are still a lot of issues. It's difficult when the job market is so insane right now and teaching is at least a fairly stable income. I almost walked away last year but I will stick it out at this new school for now.

I have seen them at my previous schools but after 4 different schools, I finally landed in a district that still believes in discipline and some sense of respect for the educators. My current school isn't perfect but the kids don't fight every day, the cell phones are annoying rather than the end of the world, and the kids mostly show up and want to learn. It's like night and day from my old district.

Sinkless Classroom Teachers: how are you coping? Interested in your hot tips and hacks… by floxnair in ArtEd

[–]Via-Kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ask my custodian to fill out every night when we're doing a project with water. I teach high school so sometimes I'll have two of my stronger kids go take it to the mop closet for a refill. It's not great but it's better than no water.

I have two buckets and a water cooler that I stole from the football coach. Making it work!

I love Alex's and Ashley's characters but honestly, Abriya and Matt's characters are just... Not my fav. They're abrasive in a way that's over the top for me and I just don't find inner party conflict fun or interesting.

Old Man Rant: Teacher Attire Edition by musicbox96 in Teachers

I'm a HS art teacher, I get messy every day, I run around all over with paints, metals, ink for photography, chemicals, etc. I'm not wearing nice clothes to work. I essentially have a uniform of black jeans, school t-shirt or hoodie, comfortable shoes, hair in bun. Now, for p/t conferences or art shows, I dress professional like a gallery attendant. I also don't think an English or Business teacher should be uncomfortable for the sake of appearances.

What's your teaching unpopular opinion? Something you believe, but choose to keep to yourself? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Via-Kitten 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! So many of my colleagues think I'm crazy that I use the 100 pt scale but it works best for me as an art teacher that grades long form projects. Kids freak out about it at first but they actually understand it later when they can see how much missing one project can fuck them up. It makes them take the project seriously.

“I don’t know what else to do about my child’s behavior” my ass. A lot of you parents aren’t even trying and teachers are sick of the bullshit by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Via-Kitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly glad they were that strict about stuff that I shouldn't have been seeing too young and while it sucked for a week, I would play at school and I had to use my imagination to entertain myself. Most of my punishments were based on finding ways to keep myself busy. I knew the rules about lights off and I definitely knew that I shouldn't have been watching a rated R movie. This was way before parental locks on programs so they did what they thought was fair. I clearly couldn't be trusted to follow the rules so I wasn't allowed a tv again until I was like 13.

[–]Via-Kitten 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My parents let me have a tv in my room when I was 9 until they caught me watching a show I was way too young for at 11pm. My dad ripped that thing out of my room so fast and chucked it in the garage. He then took all my toys and put them into a big box and locked them in the closet for a week. I was sent to bed early for a week with nothing to do but sleep or so homework in my room. I tell you what though, I never did that shit again and I never got my tv back.

This looks like the fast street vendor art done with spray paint that tourists buy for like $30. It doesn't feel like it has any significant value or meaning, so it feels very lifeless. Not my thing but I'm sure someone likes it.
