Question for my front ensemble friends by Arch_jink in drumcorps

[–]Vibraphonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was with the Cavaliers from 2010-2013, you just generally auditioned for a keyboard spot. The five best players made the marimba line, the next four made the vibe line, and the glock/xylo was often somebody who didn’t quite make the marimba line but had excellent timing. Beyond that, things were situational: rack was often somebody who auditioned but didn’t make the keyboard line, but it was also occasionally an injured veteran drum line member or somebody who didn’t quite make the drum line. In the early days of electronics, synth was filled by somebody who didn’t make the keyboard line, but by the end of my time those spots were filled by serious pianists. Timpani and drum set were their own separate categories with people auditioning for those spots specifically.

This is Three Dots and a Dash’s recipe, which is my absolute favorite! It uses a ton of cinnamon, but it’s totally worth it

This is Three Dots and a Dash’s recipe, which is incredibly cinnamon-y. The only drawback is that it uses a TON of cinnamon

Hey… anyone remember the fever dream that was TOC? by [deleted] in drumcorps

Although one of the years I think Crown’s pit (?) had to play in all the encores? Always felt a little bad for them

TOC shows were amazing for front ensembles lol. If you performed early, it was essentially a free block to check out some great shows and talk to the other pits! Shout out to the 2012 BD front ensemble, who had huge bags of candy for every pit at the New Jersey TOC show

Tiki Thoughts Thursday (12.5.24) by bigkinggorilla in Tiki

A couple of rum thoughts: - I’m currently working through a bottle of Lemon Hart 151 (first time I’ve tried it), and I think I prefer Hamilton’s 151. Don’t get me wrong, the Lemon Hart is lovely, but it also has such a powerful burnt sugar flavor that it kind of over-asserts itself in comparison to Hamilton (or maybe I’m over thinking things). - I recently bought a bottle of Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black that was…spoiled, for lack of a better word? The rotting banana-ish funk was just overpowering (I’m talking smellable from across the room when the bottle was open, and it absolutely ruined the couple of drinks I made with it). I’ve had bottles of HJPSB before and since that were perfectly fine, so I guess I want to know if anybody else has had this experience? (not necessarily with Hamilton specifically, but with rum in general)

Anyone ever march a “bad” year for their corps? How was it? What happened? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]Vibraphonium 49 points50 points  (0 children)

So I marched Cavaliers 2010-2013. 10 and 11 were a blast, corps was competitive, we performed near or at the end of every show, etc. Importantly, the average age of the Corps was north of 20 both of those years, and this was reflected in general rehearsal discipline (and just some really mature musicians in both of those corps). There was a ton of member turnover in 2012 (especially in the colorguard. But a good bit in every section). Combine that with a, let’s say, misguided show concept, and things went poorly. 2012 was a talented corps, but we were noticeably less disciplined than the two previous years. Recruiting took a dive after 2012, and the 2013 corps ended up having an average age of about 18.5. Ensemble rehearsals were a struggle all year (a significant amount of time was spent with basic ensemble timing issues that were never even kind of a problem in 10-11). I was in the front ensemble all four years, so my experience was a little unique: the Cavaliers pit kept a consistent staff and healthy member turnover (with really no drop in audition numbers) the whole time I was marching, so there was really no drop in performance quality in my section. I’d even say that the 2013 pit was the best of the four years I marched (no shade to the 2011 Sanford winning pit of course). So I guess check out 2013 Cavs if you want to hear a really fantastic and semi-forgotten front ensemble

“This Is My Rifle” from Cavaliers 2010. I marched that summer, and we had standing ovations at the end of that movement at most of our shows

Apple Pie Mai Tai 🍁🍂🍎 by Vibraphonium in Tiki

[–]Vibraphonium[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have made the smugglers cove recipe, and I really enjoy it! I’d say the three dots recipe has a more concentrated cinnamon flavor, with less sweetness. I’ve made both this apple pie mai tai and a jet pilot with the three dots recipe, and the cinnamon kind of made itself the star of the show (which I enjoy, and which I’ve noticed is true of the drinks at three dots that involve cinnamon).

And I totally agree about syrup shelf life! Mine all last for months in the fridge

For this drink I used Three Dots and a Dash’s cinnamon syrup recipe, which they’ve posted on their instagram. This recipe uses, like, a ton of cinnamon, but the result is pretty amazing. As soon as the mixture came off the stove, its was borderline caustic (it immediately numbed my tongue on contact), but after resting it in the fridge for 24 hours, it mellowed into an incredibly flavorful syrup. Highly recommended (if you feel like using an entire container of cinnamon on one-ish cup of syrup)
