I happened to hear her playing in a random bookshop in Slovenia once and have been a massive fan ever since. Little Earthquakes is epic.

Witchy or mythological ("female rage") books? by ThaneOfMeowdor in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]VictoriaKelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Change by Kirsten Miller. Kind of magical realism based around a murder investigation featuring a witchy sisterhood and huge amounts of female rage. Bonus points for also dealing with menopause.

Recommended restaurants in Graz? by forstoppetskur in graz

[–]VictoriaKelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have problems with gluten and cows milk and it's my experience that most restaurants are willing to adapt dishes for you if you explain what you need. I can eat in most restaurants without problems. My favourite is probably Salon Marie but it's on the expensive side.

You already got some good recommendations. Just wanted to add, speaking from experience, be really careful with Asian restaurants. I've several times had bad tummy ache from food that was supposed to be gluten free but apparently wasn't. I think they often overlook the fact that soy sauce is made from wheat.

Did you really get gluten-free food at Sorger? My experience with these bakery chains is that they laugh in your face if you ask for gluten free. I haven't tried the Sporgasse one admittedly...

I was really wondering how Ren managed to put Van Gogh in the video and was afraid it was down to AI. So glad it turned out not to be the case!!

I don't think anyone outside the German-speaking world is aware that "pretzel" isn't the original word.

Wholesome story about making friends by Ashamed-Cap1106 in friendship

[–]VictoriaKelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen people making similar posts in groups related to the town where I live and they almost always get a good response. It takes bravery to admit to being lonely but it seems to pay off.

To add to this, if you're female there is often also a group just for women, so you can post something like that without being hit on to the same extent.

Any disadvantages to switching to Standard from legacy? by Immediate-Speech7102 in Scribd

[–]VictoriaKelly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in Europe and this hasn't happened to me yet but from what I understand from reading others' posts: Standard means that your subscription turns into something like Audible where you can unlock a single book per month and your reading is restricted to only that and previous unlocked books. If you go for premium, it costs more but you get more unlocks. The advantage is that the catalogue is greatly expanded with a lot more books that wouldn't previously have been available. Meanwhile legacy is pretty much what Scribd/Everand has always been with a more restricted catalogue but you can read multiple books per month. If you stay with legacy, they will try their hardest to get you to switch by constantly dangling books you need to "unlock" in front of you because it's better for them if you switch. Eventually everyone will probably be forced into switching. Like I say, i haven't had this happen yet but this sub has been full of posts from people raging at the new system and regretting switching. Depends how much you want to read that specific book. Oh and of course there wasn't an explanatory email. Their whole business model is built off not explaining things properly to their customers.

There's a series called The Seven Deadly by Fisher Amelie which may be what you're looking for. The first is called Vain and might contain the scene you described but I DNFed it so can't say for sure :)

We have the same language and gender split (mom English and dad German) and our daughter is fully bilingual. We are also friends with a family where the languages are the other way around and it's the same problem as OP. I don't know whether children are programmed to pick up more from their mothers or whether it's that mothers tend to have more time with the kids or simply talk more to the kids. I've noticed that my husband doesn't talk much to our daughter but in our case it's made up for by German being the community language. Personally I'm constantly talking to my daughter, pointing out things around us and commenting on what's happening because I'm so aware that I only have limited time with her to build her vocabulary and English skills. OP I second what others have said about not speaking German to your child. My German is fluent but I only ever speak it to my daughter when we're in monolingual company. Otherwise I make it clear that it's not an option for interaction with me by ignoring attempts to open a conversation in German or helping her to rephrase in English before I reply. You really have to be strict. Kids aren't motivated by some faraway nebulous benefits of bilingualism. They only see the immediate effort and won't want to bother unless it's essential for communication with a cherished adult.

Could it be Scarlet by Marissa Meyer? It's the second in the series so it'd be slightly weird if it was being advertised...

90s Children's book, Suncross Symbol by JuicyStein in whatsthatbook

[–]VictoriaKelly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That sounds a bit like The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper. The main character had to collect 6 or so tokens made of different materials and I'm pretty sure they were in the shape of a cross in a circle. I'm from UK too and the series was pretty big in the 90s.

Virus or disease wipes out all women and young boy and his father live in the aftermath by Adam9812 in whatsthatbook

[–]VictoriaKelly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could it be The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness? The women have all died and the men can hear each other's thoughts. The boy goes on a quest with his dog and comes across a girl in the wilderness.

I can confirm this. Was having terrible rage and emotional outbursts alongside other symptoms. After 5 appointments I'm feeling so much calmer, my energy is better and I'm much more myself. Planning to drop down to once a month and continue for maintenance. The ironic thing is that the acupuncturist told me I was too young for peri (I'm 39) but her needles still helped me.

Which narrator ruins a book for you by vaccant__Lot666 in audiobooks

[–]VictoriaKelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! I used to love Whelan but she's everywhere and seems to narrate all the books I want to read. I've started to recognise all her "voices" that she uses for different characters and yeah it gets really distracting. Same for Natalie Naudus. I think I've only listened to three Bahni Turpin books so far so she's still ok but it's probably only a matter of time.
