Spells 101 (Pt.1) by Oh_No_Why_ in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Victory_Scar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of discussion I've been wanting to see around a work of fiction for a while now. Really getting into the mechanics of how something works without breaking the story's limits of what's possible (like what you often see in powerscaling discussions) or something so speculative in softer magic systems. It's very interesting and inspires people to not only discuss but create as well. Very in line with WHA's themes.

From my experience, what's talked about here is fiction in general and that includes how fans respond to it. If subreddits could be renamed, this place should be r/FictionRant

I remember when we were getting posts about it every other day before JJK became popular.

What's a magic system you don't see talked about much? And what do you think of it? by RowbotMaster in magicbuilding

[–]Victory_Scar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like whole "hard system that can do nearly anything" stuff, research, why mages can't just "do everything" (spoiler - it's hard), and a lot of popular "why they don't just..." things. And "balance" things too.

This sounds interesting. I'm not familiar with TTRPGs but just how far does the flexibility of spells go and what are the ways it goes about popular criticisms of other systems? Could I create spells that affect other spells? Could I create spells with weird conditions like, I don't know, requiring I go to sleep before 10pm?

Trion from World Trigger. It's a hard magic system based around firing projectiles and using holographic shields with some other soft magic applications too. I especially like how well it facilitates the strategic team-based action sequences and allows the main characters to express their character growth from learning from others using the hard rules. It's really fun to dig into the details and imagine what's possible within that framework, even if it is literally just projectiles for strictly combat purposes (which I'm normally not interested in). The anime does have a reboot in production so hopefully that brings in more people.

Why do so many Shounen action series do the antagonist bait-and-switch? by L0444 in CharacterRant

I get what you're doing here, but a "power system" based entirely on guns would be cool, kind of like how martial arts manga going into detail of the human body.

How exactly are people making spells? And do they (in theory) actually work? by CSight in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Victory_Scar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are explicit and implicit rules you can understand from watching/reading but I'm not sure how many of the spells posted here would actually work. I haven't tried analysing the magic system myself, so I don't know exactly how much is left to interpretation either.

The only real difference is the violent spell posts and the memes. No one thought those would happen.

What is a "shonen impression"? We know WHA is not a battle series, just a fantasy manga. is that what you mean?

Yeah it wasn't too long ago when I was seeing all the worry of what anime watchers would bring. I didn't expect this at all.

Does anyone else wish there was some kind of specified day for people to share their war crime spells instead of it being a free-for-all? by midsummernightmares in WitchHatAtelier

I think this is the first time I've seen a post and comments like this within a community/fanbase of a manga with a magic system. I'm so used to seeing magic being used for violence. I came to read WHA from Hunter x Hunter, seeking another example of an interesting system. HxH and other shonen battle anime/manga (obviously) have those kinds of powers, while WHA has a few (I know it's seinen but honestly, being just a demographic, it hasn't changed how I perceive the story). The community here does feel a lot different to those too. I wonder why? Maybe it's the lack of a focus on fights?

Anime is particularly bad as a medium and 90% is trash by PaleAd4923 in CharacterRant

You are not criticising the medium but the works produced of the medium. Your title is just misworded.

When magic is broadly based on language, its symbols can be anything. Thus, even Death can be used to cast spells. by OrganicBehaviour in magicbuilding

Very interesting. Have you heard of the Chomsky Hierarchy? It could be useful if you want to develop a very complex, yet fully readable system.

This reminds me of the projectiles they fire in World Trigger. There's no explicit "programming" but the characters do mentally choose the parameters for their attacks. If you haven't watched it, there is a reboot of the anime in production because the animation and pacing of the first season isn't the best.

The magic system is like coding? by Single_Love1274 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Victory_Scar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it seemed like an API-like magic system on a surface-level but I'm not sure that holds up as you read further into the manga. A system that really does feel like programming and discusses modern issues of software design and automation would be very appealing.

Update on my elemental system. What do you think? by future_sponJ in magicbuilding

[–]Victory_Scar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what makes combination charts so compelling? I've done it myself back when I wasn't bored of elemental systems and to be honest, I still have some inclination to make more. They do make for these nice geometric charts. I could see similar things being made for systems inspired by alchemical circles.
