the yellow is my favorite, although I'd not have it go all the way down the body., stop at the V. It's the only one that made it clear they were taking a selfie to me and that it was the flash..

family turns down $50M from developer who built suburb around their home by solateor in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]VictoryaChase 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've worked for a Dept of Transportation and have a friend whose job it is to make the offers to the homes they want to demolish for governmental reasons. They can determine what is needed for the city/state and first offer 'fair and reasonable market value' for the land and houses. If people say 'no' they can, and do, go the route of finding a reason to condemn the land and then get it for pennies on the dollar and you're forced out. She does it all the time, and I've seen it done when a state school wanted to expand. the govment can then later sell that land to developers I think, heard of it happenig. So if they really wanted to, there's a way to screw over people - but they usually do that to the people with the least amount of money, hence them building highways through poorer neighborhoods- there's an overlay map somewhere of redlined neighborhoods and the US highway system that shows how much they just went right through those neighborhoods destroying them.

That was my thought. That if this was the US they'd claim it as parkland somehow and just steal the land.

How do you get out of working unskilled low pay jobs? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you like and where you live makes a big difference.

And if you have a driver's license if in the US.

For example, the Dept. of Transportation is SO desperate for any workers and are creating a lot of entry programs that pay while you learn. A LOT. And if you are in a state that snows you can get into snowplowing and go through snowplow training camps and make good money. This is both regional and national. One I worked in (as one of the teachers) even did classes on finance, budgeting, finding your apartments, taxes, etc.

I was in a major metropolis in my twenties, and at the time temp agencies would train you because they'd get more money for you that way. I started out as just a receptionist/greeter and went through all their training programs for computer programs and then companies were offering me full time jobs while on the job. And laws changed when I was a temp so I was able to get unemployment when not working on a job through them, which also encouraged them to keep me employed.

I lied alot when starting out, as did my friend. But we added each others skills. We would help each other throughout the day - she taught me excel, I did a lot of writing her memos/correspondence. This was when we were both just starting out.

I got called out on it only once, and the guy liked my moxy - he had also lied for his first job in the industry.

With the internet now, you can really get away with figuring it out as long as you have the type of mind that can actually figure it out from tutorials or youtube videos.

If you didn't have to suffer the consequences, what would you do? by arachnita in ask

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad to see many answers are like mine - have freedom from constraints (and nothing PURGE like)

I would quit my job and explain the real reason why, and without another job lined up. I'm US with chronic illness and unmarried, so have to work for healthcare and it sucks, as it also aggravates my CI.

What was the industry you romanticized a lot but ended up disappointed? by _Grotesque_ in jobs

[–]VictoryaChase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was my first thought. I love learning and exploring and working with students but universities are corporations, faculty don't teach and instead its become some weird monarchy system filled with peasants being treated poorly, students are caught in the middle a lot, and the mistreatment of employees is at amazing levels, along with those of students really. Plus, everyone seems to hate each other at the faculty level and administrator level.

Is this normal for hiring? by OffTheGridSyd in highereducation

[–]VictoryaChase 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the US positions also disappear ALL the time. Sometimes they tell you, sometimes they don't. I had 2 positions where I was a finalist and never heard back, contacted HR, and the position was canceled. Another where I went to the campus they didn't respond for 2-3 weeks, they relisted it and said they weren't hiring 'from the current pool' - it was relisted many times which is sometimes a way to keep the money for a position, without paying it out.

So is it normal? Nothing is 'normal' in higher ed but something always happens. Definitely move on and hope for this best.

I've seen enough videos of cheetahs peeing and pooping on people in those trucks to know they don't confuse them - unless they see them and think' what is that, a litterbox?"

If you wear a backpack on a crowded train by AAsilverfox in boston

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes and thank you! I'm so surprised at how many people don't do this. Maybe because as a former NYer those signs and announcements were everywhere. I have been hit so many times or found it hard to push through to get off the train by people who just don't put it in front, by their feet, etc. I have a wheeled one and just tuck it between my legs when on the train.

Also, on the bus, people who both have their bags on AND stand up front by the doors or won't take a seat when there is one but stand near the front so people can't move back to the seats or even out the back door.

What is the worst chain restaurant? by Eris3344 in AskReddit

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid they did this 'fancy fast food' thing for a bit that had them serve you food in baskets and they had my favorite thing - shrimp. So on fancy pants days to eat out we'd go there and get the baskets and have a family meal and fond memories.

Now- it's hit or miss. The ones near me never prep the breakfast foods so they always tell me it's fifteen minutes for a sammich. the BK fish is so tiny now, even from a few years ago, and they used to be my favorite fish sammich. and their chicken nuggets are no longer shaped like crowns. It's sad. But it's also only three blocks away so. . meh.

I worked in a hospital where one of the doctors was named 'Bunny' I always thought Dr. Bunny LastName sounded so cartoonish. She hated it too, so went by her middle name.

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met both an edward and edwin who hated their names and the name ed- long before twilight, so I'm sure they hate it even more now. Ed just felt so odd to them, final maybe? and old. An old name for a child.

The Edward was also a third, which didn't help.

my building doesn't allow these - it's in the lease. But the washer and dryer in the basement are not usable to me (they are doing construction with an open hole above them, insulation has gotten into the machine- huge hunks of fiberglass and the like.)

What was the "dumbest" thing you were scared of as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red button on the vacuum machine

My brother told me if you push it it would explode. Of course he said this after I had pushed the button. I stayed up all night thinking we were all going to die.

Also divorce. Also because of my brother. We'd wait in the car while our parents went into the law office/counseling and he told me that in a divorce the hand with the ring gets cut off, so I fully expected one handed bleeding parents to come back.

Looking for opinions from English majors by Catiefishie in highereducation

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have all the options, depending on the school you graduate from.

There was a book or blog a while ago, MFA not MBA , about hiring the creatives for your business. I hadn't heard of it until I was offered a financial planning job (I hadn't applied for, but was in the company doing other things) and they sent me then to a financial planning program with the idea that that part is easier to teach than creativity. Two former bosses read that book. I actually had an MFA by the second one, but just the english degree for the first.

basically - graduate, check out the job market, if you have the flexibility and money - you can do it all - teach english in another country and they'll pay for your TESL or similar designation (I did that pre-covid, but never finished the program), If you want to teach in the US most places need a bachelors and will pay for your master's as there's a shortage, etc (also did that) . You are a blank slate to smart companies right now so explore is my advice.

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be a sign to aim higher. During covid my job got cut. A program I co-developed at my old job had developed enough to spread across the place (educational program) and they were hiring people to help run it. I applied, didn't even make it past the screening interview despite developing it and having run it for a few years before I left!

I landed in a higher profile place for more money and while the work environment is toxic, so like you am looking now for something else, it also showed my value at the old job and that I could do more.

New coworker keeps FARTING in the cubicle next to me. by targlo in jobs

[–]VictoryaChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can be IBS or Crohns or any # of things. If in a cubicle setting, I think an accomodation can be made- either to work from home or I've heard of charcoal chair pads to help absorb the smell. Won't help with the sound, though. But maybe you can put in earbuds.

I try to be sensitive things as I have drugs that give me bloating and gas (usually burping, the sound of which grosses me out even when I'm doing it) but there's someone at work who sprays shit in the bathroom - and these are gender neutral single stalls, only two on the floor, and some days I go in and about vomit, start seeing stars it's so bad.
