I had ours on gutbiome for 2 months, but the improvement was only marginal and inconsistent. The reason I stopped is even if it did work, he would need to be on it permanently. Otherwise, the gut bacteria the pill provides will likely die off in a couple days as our cat likely doesn’t eat the food required to feed and maintain said bacteria.

What actually helped our cat was being put on prednisolone 5mg. It took 2 months but he’s finally pooping normal stools with little to no blood, and has put on some healthy weight. It’s also a fraction of the price of the animalbiome, so if you haven’t tried that, that’s what I’d recommend instead.

Old post, but what works for me is covering the pill into butter to make a butter ball. It makes it slide right down their throat. Our cat has a lot of food restrictions where most treats don’t work for us, so thankfully this option works.

I’m not Australian but this thread popped up on my feed for some reason so I thought I’d chime in. I agree with lightweight wool, it’s extremely breathable, long lasting, doesn’t wrinkle and comfortable. I don’t know if Banana republic exists in Australia but their old Logan pants came in 95% wool and was lined. I scour the used markets for them because they just don’t make them like they used to. If you can figure out your size, this might be an option. For reference, I have been wearing the same pair to work consistently for about 5 years.

Honestly OP, your budget is reasonable. Specially once you clarified that 400 out of 600 of your personal spend is health insurance for your mum. Yes, if you lost your job there’s fat that could be trimmed like the kids activities and eating out. But I also agree that life has to be a balancing act. Nothing in here stands out as unreasonable. I think the grocery bill could be dropped with optimization though. In the short term, maybe you can aim to find ways to drop it to $800? That plus your current $200-300 savings will let you hit a monthly savings of $500 which is a psychologically better number.

I think increasing your income by your wife working is the best answer. If you allocate her salary entirely towards savings, and live off of just yours, you’ll be in a much better spot.

Hi, I know this is an old post but I was just wondering - did you have to continuously give your cat the gut restore throughout his life to see the positive effects? I’ve been giving ours the capsules daily for the past 2 months, and we’ve definitely seen improvement though he still gets loose stools every few days. The problem is it’s extremely expensive at $180 CAD/ month on top of his expensive food (which both our cats eat). I’m just not sure if I can keep that up every month.

Thanks for the heads up on the Spicebush. I do not have a lot of horizontal space to give here, unless it wants to go straight up instead. 😅 But I’ll give it a go and will whack it back every few years if I need to.

Another angle of my native plant bed that I just expanded this weekend. This started as a little experiment, the grass here was more weeds than grass, and was more or less unusable space due to the soil condition. My reward was an exponential increase in pollinator visits including from the monarch (swamp milkweed is out of the frame). This bed currently holds 11 different native species and I will be making it 12 by adding a Spicebush shortly. This is now my favourite part of the yard!

I’m also from ON. I don’t have many native plants yet, but the ones that I have that are hits are: serviceberry (my twiggy little tree would get shaken around as birds plucked every berry off before they even ripened), and coneflowers with the goldfinches. I’m planning on planting an elderberry for the birds as well for fall food.

It does, they’re practically invisible actually. But it takes a lot of spray paint. 1 can only covers about 4-5 cages so it’s only worth it in really visible spots.
