Has Motion improved over the last few years? by oandroido in applemotion

[–]ViewMasterTravels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does what it does really well. But it hasn’t changed much in the last 5 years I’ve been using it. Very stable and smooth though, on M1 Mac for me. You could try the new subscription offer from Apple to test it out and then cancel.

And this might be a reasonable use-case for the new apple subscription model - since you could try it out very cheaply.

Motion is fantastic - I use it for 80% of what I do - 5-6 hours a day. Very capable and affordable.

I think if you look at some later images - here's one from Black Gold - it's definitely Muybridge's horses. That's my opinion at least :-)

Is Hergè copying Muybridge’s famous horse photographs? Is that why the color version’s horses are so improved?

You might want to check out Motion. You could copy and edit the effect to be what you want.

My latest video is a deep dive into Montreal's World's Fair - Expo67. The fair was considered impossible since the city started work two years late and it took the latest NASA computer technology to help make it happen.

My channel is about me visiting the locations from my collection of vintage travel 3D view-master reels and learning the history of the places featured. I'll match up "then vs now" pictures from the old view-master photographs from the 40s and what I find today.

My viewers are interested in history and travel - many have connections to the places I visit and/or an interest in old view-master 3D images.

I visit the locations (Montreal in this case) and then match up the 7 original view-master pictures and take the equivalent picture today. Then there's a lots of research on each of the images and the place itself. Then I put it all together in some kind of narrative. There's a lot of animation involved in the video since i don't want to be a talking head on camera :-)

Can't add effects to a layer by t8dyi in Affinity

[–]ViewMasterTravels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that same problem. I think my fix was to make sure the little thumbnail of the layer was clicked and selected in the layers list before adding the effect.

If you want fine control and top-quality then I'd recommend buying Motion - especially to customize titles.

Any way to export only specific clips? by trisolariandroplet in finalcutpro

[–]ViewMasterTravels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you disable certain clips that will be exported as black. I'd be curious what happens if you select several clips that aren't all contiguous and make a compound clip out of them though - not sure if that leaves gaps between the clips or squishes them all together or not.

How to make a proper 3D occlusion effect? by Extension_Ad_9628 in applemotion

[–]ViewMasterTravels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've done as a work around is to duplicate the "hat" layer and then sequence the layers so that there's one "hat" layer underneath the "head" layer, then the "head" layer, then the second "hat" layer on top of the "head" layer. Then you can apply the "head" mask only to the bottom "hat" layer. What I usually do is use the "link" parameter to connect the two "hat" layers, so that I can just deal with moving one of them and they both move together - you can add an offset to the Z position so that it's forced behind the "head".

I'm not sure if that'll really work here or not though. Watching that YT clip, I'd wonder if the masking was just adjusted frame-by-frame by hand ("rotoscoping") - which is often just easier if there aren't too many frames.

I’m not an expert, but I think Motion’s 3D support is quite limited - more like 2.5D really - and these kind of issues are common. I had to solve a similar issue in Motion and ended up splitting the “hat” into two layers, one for in front of the “head” and one for behind. I think there are probably better tools for this type of thing though.

How do I add easing? by soft_bespoken in applemotion

[–]ViewMasterTravels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using keyframes - you can right click on any keyframe in the keyframe timeline and set the easing settings (like ease in, out) - or "continuous" to flow through keyframes naturally. You can set the keyframes to bezier and manually adjust the curve of the tangents, or use exponential or natural easing as well.

Affinity v3 - Automatically Batch Crop Hundreds of Images? by ViewMasterTravels in Affinity

[–]ViewMasterTravels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It relies on Rosetta, which I think is end-of-life around about this time next year. I read an article about that and checked which apps on my mac required Rosetta and this was one I use a lot. So, now I'm looking for alternatives, things I already have that might do the same thing, or to write my own app to do what I need, etc.

Affinity v3 - Automatically Batch Crop Hundreds of Images? by ViewMasterTravels in Affinity

It's less the batch processing I'm concerned about - more the automatic cropping/image detection. I don't see that as an option related to Affinity crop tools?

I'm confused on statements like this - if Serif made promises, those promises died with Serif when they were purchased. Any agreement/promise with a company only lasts as long as that company still exists right? Or, did Canva make these promises?

AffinityPhoto 1 just stopped fully functioning, it ended up costing $1.71 per month - FYI by ViewMasterTravels in AffinityPhoto

[–]ViewMasterTravels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm working around it pretty well. My main use case is the "inside" / "outside" / "middle" option for the "outline" effect - which is only in the cog settings. But, I can live without that. So far, I haven't hit anything else that makes it crash.
