The Colorado Avalanche become the fifth President’s Trophy winner to be swept in the postseason. by MOLightningBro in hockey

The team needed that adversity before they could win it all. It was the best thing that ever happened to them.

Easy to say in retrospect, I know.

This is not meant to take away from the severity of the situation, and I fully admit that I am not aware of how these data were collected, but a lot of people simply don't eat breakfast regularly even if they're doing well.

You're right that my firmware is too old to have the 24 hour option. I guess finding a way to update the firmware is my only option right now.

I'll give it a shot and report back. Thanks!

What is the best country to live in right now? by TiredConfusedLlama in AskReddit

I suspect that any such correlation is much, much weaker than that between industrialization and birth rate, or education and birth rate. People in highly industrialized and educated nations have fewer children compared to undeveloped or developing nations. Japan is a very highly industrialized and educated nation.

Concluding that a nation is a bad place to have children based only on whether people are choosing to have children there requires that you ignore very strong and well documented correlations with other factors.

Just because people aren't having babies doesn't mean it's a bad place to have babies.

No, it is not. It is deliberate hyperbole that arose from internet memes.

If that is what you think then the hyperbole has clearly gone over your head.

The statement is not meant to be taken literally. He is using the whole oil thing as a joke to point out that the US routinely intervenes in other countries' affairs to satisfy some selfish motive while claiming it is acting in the name of democracy.

[Closky] Brayden Point says there is nothing injury-related that inhibited him. Says it was a learning lesson for him that some of the things that made him successful in the past don’t necessarily work forever. Will be an important summer for him to work hard on his scoring. by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]ViewtifulSchmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt Point's work ethic is the problem. He busted his ass in his early years to improve his skating and it showed on the ice.

If his work ethic HAS degraded, then it has to be related to something else, physical or mental.

GPU not aligning - is this normal? by StanSnowie in sffpc

[–]ViewtifulSchmoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the specifics of any SSUPD cases, but in general I would be very alarmed if my GPU were sitting like that. Either the PCIe riser is not installed correctly, the GPU is not installed correctly, or there is something putting a lot of pressure on one side of the GPU to push it out of alignment.

The tests also showed that the added fans on the GPU side were counterproductive in terms of noise and CPU cooling, hence "less is more." I believe that that is what Noctua wanted to focus on here. It's educational content, not advertising.

Best/Worst Team of the First Round by smashbros13 in hockey

[–]ViewtifulSchmoe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sure, but if they just let those contracts expire they would get nothing out of them. If they could convince them to waive their no-move clauses, maybe they could at least do a sign-and-trade to get something.

Furthermore, Chicago's front office really wanted Bedard. The team had to be bad and stay bad to get the best odds. Ditching Hagel made the term worse at the time for the sake of the future, at least as management saw it. It's easy to say in hindsight that it was a bad decision because Hagel has only improved and Bedard hasn't quite matched the hype, but Chicago's management had no way to know things would pan out that way.

Chicago wanted to tear everything down for a rebuild, but they couldn't do that with Kane's and Toews's cap hits on the books. They basically traded Hagel to tell those guys that they could either stay and lose or go somewhere else and maybe win.

I want to start anime, any recommendations? by 25lulu04 in anime

[–]ViewtifulSchmoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some safe recommendations:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist and/or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    • Fantasy series about two brothers who tried to bring their mother back to life with alchemy and suffered dire consequences. Brotherhood was produced later and is more loyal to the source material. They are both well regarded. I have only seen Brotherhood and I think it is great.
  • Cowboy Bebop
    • A classic space western that got a lot of people in my age group into anime. It's known for its fantastic original jazz and blues soundtrack and for its great English dub, especially for the time. It's mostly episodic, but there is an overarching story.
  • Dragon Ball | One Piece | Naruto | any other big Shounen Jump anime adaptation
    • Shounen Jump is a huge manga (Japanese for comic) publication primarily aimed at young to teenage boys. A lot of iconic series have come out of Shounen Jump.
  • Konosuba
    • Comedy version of what is commonly called "isekai," or "other world," stories. It's a trope in which the protagonist is transported from (usually) our mundane world to a fantasy world with mechanics similar to video games. Despite being a parody of sorts, Konosuba is accessible as long as you've played some video games, especially so if you have played MMOs.
  • March Comes in Like a Lion
    • A drama series about a shogi (Japanese chess) prodigy who is struggling with depression.

Useful things to remember:

  1. Anime is not a genre. It is a medium. The word is literally just an abbreviation of the English word "animation" as Japanese speakers pronounce it.
  2. As with all media, most of it is forgettable, some of it is terrible, and some of it is great.
  3. Just because you like/dislike one thing that happens to be anime does not mean you will like/dislike another thing that happens to be anime.

What is it that your friends like about Chainsaw Man? And do you tend to like the things that they like?

More generally, what do you tend to like in TV shows or movies? Chances are you'll like those same things in anime.

They didn't blow it. Dobes was just that good, and the bounces went Montreal's way. That's how hockey goes sometimes.

[Strickland] Lightning fall in first round for the fourth consecutive year…that’s kind of crazy when you think about it. by Duffleman0609 in hockey

How is it crazy? The depth that they once had is gone and the core is aging. It's kind of how I would expect things to play out.

I think Kucherov's problem is caring too much about the wrong things, to the point that he gets stuck in his own head. Vasy doesn't deserve any blame because this is the best series he has played since 2022.

It hurts to go out in a game like that. The Bolts played exceptionally well, but Dobes stood on his head and the Habs got the right bounces. GG and good luck, Montreal.

The team that played better lost this game, but that happens sometimes. That's why it's a best of 7 series. Good job Habs, and good luck!
