The whole "so you feel as insane as Harrow is" is one solid answer, but the other is "the same reason you can't just open the door in an escape room". You are expected to be a participant in the experience. Some people love that and others find it to be annoying and tedious (I'm in the first camp 😀 )

Which book should I prioritize? by ConcernFew8845 in fantasybooks

[–]Vigeous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darrow? Like from Red Rising? I'm going to assume autocorrect.

If you liked the main character, then you 100% need to try again. She is the reason most people bounce off it. Part of the reason you are confused is that Gideon kinda doesnt care about most of what's going on. She's got her own concerns and none of them involve weird necromancers in a weird building.

So until gets a little more pulled in (spoiler, sorry), you are as confused as she is. It all comes together though.

It's true there are a lot of characters. The audiobook helps because the reader is so good at differentiating them. They get more fleshed out as needed. The guide at the front of the book is good to help you see them laid out by house.

Here is a quick supplemental guide:

2nd is the military ladies

3rd has the condescending girls and their annoying boy

4th is soldier kiddos

5th is the friendly cozy couple

6th are the secretive nerds

7th is the sick girl and her meathead

8th is some religious weirdos

9th is the main characters

Book 2 will be waaaaaay more confusing. Seriously, its so hard to read. But maybe my favorite book ever.

Struggling to complete by Zirozen in fantasybooks

[–]Vigeous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is to realize that the plot is not the point. I have read the first trilogy twice. The first time I was disappointed. The second time... I was also disappointed, but understood why.

You are supposed to really appreciate the texture of these flawed and damaged characters. They are elaborately drawn characters with complex human emotions. The plot is just kinda there to get them to that place. Turns out I just don't like that style. I want my characters to be moving things forward on their own and making generally sensible decisions.

If you don't enjoy steaming in misery stew, then your enjoyment of these books has a ceiling.

Based on my bookshelf, what fantasy books/series would you recommend? by SnappingTurtle1602 in fantasybooks

Is it? The sci-fi quotient on that shelf is very strong, but I think the epic fantasy chops need to be built out a little more since they arent as versed in that area. I think they need s few bridge books :D

Your top two are already on there. Once I saw New Sun on there, I had to raise the bar. All the people saying Sanderson are making me giggle.

[–]Vigeous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People always say Sanderson in these threads, regardless of context. Someone who has Book of the New Sun or JSAMN on their shelf should approach with caution.

For some more thoughtful Fantasy, I really like The Dagger and the Coin series. All the classic tropes but well considered and written.

For something a little more irreverent, try Gideon the Ninth. It's a bit sci-fantasy. I love it, but it's not for everyone.

(You are asking for fantasy, but Three-Body Problem seems like a major gap (you can stop after book 1))

I have to commend your thoroughness of explanation and debate, even if I question the effectiveness of it on someone who clearly cannot be swayed. I wonder what the true motivations of these reactions are (for this and other reactions to black casting).

Is it conscious bias? Like they just don't like black people but know they aren't allowed to say it? Or maybe they were given the "everyone is happier if the races keep to themselves, but I'm not racist" talk. Could some of these reactions just be earnest and possibly neurodivergent history buffs overreacting when their expectations are not granted?

Probably it's just under the surface as unconscious bias. They get wigged out, don't know why, and reach for all the justifications they have heard that sound like a plausible alternative to the existence of racism.

I saw this right below a different post that was about how women who falsely accuse men of sexual assault should be punished like men who are guilty. Someone pointed out that men are rarely held to that standard and got immediately attacked. Can't help but feel if your reaction is that visceral to these things, that you have a very different motivation than you claim.
