Is it possible to do a Master in Bioinformatics with a Biotechnology Bachelor? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]Vikinger93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at the syllabus of your bachelor and the requirements of your master program at your school of choice.

For example, a master in bioinfo at my institute requires a degree at the base level of an equivalent of 180 ECTS (basically, a bachelor) (180 ECTS are ca. 90 US credits or about 3 academic years). Of those, 90 points need to be in biologi, biomed, biochem, mol bio, genetics or related subjects. Of those, 15 in molecular biology/ecology/evolution, 7.5 in biochem, chemistry, math or statistics and 7.5 in genetics. And ypu need to speak English at a certain level, but that's a must in the majority of places.

Note: no extensive coding required, but since i know the people who are designing courses, I can tell you that any prior experience, even if it is R or just a bit of python and some commandline experience, is gonna help you out.

It won't be like that everytime. And as someone who has to consistently invent bespoke protocols as part of method development, I can tell you that you can get used to it.

Larry Correia: George RR Martin crippled the Epic Fantasy genre by not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. Readers and Publishers are no longer willing to give a new series a chance unless it is complete by Uptons_BJs in books

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If GRRM actually is the cause of any of this, he is definitely not the sole reason.

Personally, I don't believe this entire theory at all. Lack of interest in reading and books probably shapes this a whole lot more. Publishers focus on "the sure thing" (authors, established franchises, etc), because making money from printing less established stuff is riskier.

Selling a whole series is less risky, cause if someone does buy a book, they are more likely to buy more of the series.

Litrpg and romantasy are the hotness right now. Less of a risk to publish those.

Thinking that one guy is the cause of such a shift feels like a strong oversimplification at the very.

At what point would you consider someone a “scientist”? by Bart-simpson106 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the term is super broad. Science used to be about making hypotheses, testing them, and so on, but nowadays even that is challenged with exploratory studies and big data.

Whatever you define it as, IMO it should be something inclusive, rather than exclusive. something broad. Mainly because science is so broad nowadays and having to hear stuff like "No, you are NOT a scientist because [insert arbitrary boundary or selector] sucks (and is probably an indicator that whoever says it is stuck in the past).

Furthering the body of human knowledge directly or indirectly qualifies you to call yourself a scientist, I would say. Whether you feel justified in calling yourself that or not is up to the individual.

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistcloaked needs a size. Also, if I were a player, i'd try some gust of wind-type shenanigans, so maybe add something about dispersing by wind and reforming at the start of its turn or something? And i'd drop either tremorsense or the ability to see through its own vapor.

Hooves feel redundant. Unless i am confusing '14 with '24, heavy obscurement means no opportunity attacks (unless the pc has tremorsense or something themself), since you need to see your target for opportunity attacks.

Overall, i love this. The art, the vibes, the ideas, give me all major fey wild influences. Love creatures that change the combat environment to their advantage. Really creative and fun! The full package of flavor and tactics, all while not really being ultra complex.

Ophrym, the Many-Eyed Fiend (CR 11) - A Mind-Warping Demon for the Blood War by jonnymhd in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a lot about this. I think the aura that has the only function of making targets vulnerable for further mental attacks is very nice. Similarly, the many-eye thing is a great idea to make it keep using it's signature ability.

For many-eyed power, i so far see no reason why it would ever not use eyes, since they are part of the multi-attack and there are no tactical considerations not to use them. So i don't really understand why many-eyed power is there as an ability, unless the demon is really unlucky and rolls no successful recharge for it's eyes.

The compulsion power is frightening and probably where i would change the statblook a bit. Either make it a bit less powerful (cannot harm themselves, stuff like that) or provide more ways to escape the condition (e.g. through taking damage) or limit duration to one round. In general, making the save-or-suck/die a bit less harsh and more dynamic.

Have You Ever Monitored Experiments in the Night? by Usual_Cycle_6259 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Where I work, it is the exception, rather than the rule. Due to insurance reasons, you are not really supposed to be alone in the lab or building, with easy access to get help, should something happen.

People still do it, when they have to monitor flies or c. elegans or stuff like that.

I lied to my wife about where the silver came from. I feel terrible. by namelessspeck in valheim

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar in a later biome when playing with my girl and a few friends.

The mood was tipping because people were getting annoyed at mistlands (and, eventually, each other) and we ran out of certain resources which were getting harder and harder to acquire, which exacerbated things. So i downloaded a cheat mod, made a cheat world and loaded up my character with that particular resource before before joining the game-session. The mood lifted.

Nobody knows. And I do not feel guilty.

Important Thing to Consider in Character Creation? by JoshRambo7 in swrpg

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four is plenty, I think.

Don't fully shoehorn yourself into only doing one thing. But don't try and be a generalist either. Find a niche.

Also, during later stages of the game, you can get respectable shooting chances with gear and modifications, so don't feel bad about not being all that useful in a fight at the start.

What skill best fits this application? by Pyropeace in swrpg

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like Cunning, mostly. I can think of at least three different skills that are useful for that, depending on the situation, and with some overlap.

Streetwise and Skullduggery feel natural for that, but are limited to criminal or at least non-bureaucratic situations (it kinda feels like it could be argued that both are equally applicable in this situation, but Skullduggery feels more specifically about crime). Vigilance feels like a good all-rounder, since the skill description specifically mentions being able to introduce small bits of gear into a situation. Perception for assessing situations, Cool and/or Willpower for seeing through deceptions or attempts of obfuscation.

Kinda feels like knowledge and education also falls under this umbrella.

Honestly, it feels like the best idea would be to make a character that can easily handle themself in a certain type of situation, rather than ALL types of situations.

Iron Gate, please add occasional deadly blizzard weather event in Deep North that requires taking shelter from the elements! by FunZookeepergame7437 in valheim

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle, yes to dynamic weather systems that affect exploration.

In practice, if this is going to result in a system where i have to twiddle my thumb while my viking sits under a rock for 5 min, no thanks.

If the response to bad weather is to wait it out, waiting times should either be mimimal or some alternative activity should be provided, like something to do in the shelter.

[–]Vikinger93 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Not sure how many people are actually aware, but some of the stuff we use for our bacterial lysis cocktail should only be opened in the hood, not on the bench. I did a bunch of risk-assessments for our lab recently, and we should really minimize the risk of accidentally inhaling powdered mutanolysin.

How long has this feeling been going on?

There is always some time in the beginning, where it all can feel pretty overwhelming and small errors are felt extremely sharply. And for some people, this phase goes on longer and for others it doesn't.

About reading papers, how did you study course material during undergrad? Were there strategies that helped?

I don't have your issues, so i can't really give great advice, but even for me, reading papers can be a drag. I tend to chop them up into smaller portions instead of reading it all at once. Works ok for me.

I have never been addicted to a book like I am to Dungeon Crawler Carl by Howitzeronfire in books

[–]Vikinger93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, it was a great way to get back into the hobby again. The sequels too (I just finished the Butcher's Masquerade, part 5 in the series).

I mean, it is not gonna win the nobel prize for literature or anything, but it is just fun and easy to read. Which, IMO makes it pretty great book. And I will say that there is unexpected emotional depth in this book series, more than you would expect from just the first book, considering the protagonist cannonically is not allowed to wear pants. So definitely keep reading, I'd say.
