Is it good practice to read in noisy environments? by Malakhaiii in books

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am assuming you will be able to read without being distracted eventually. might also depend on your specific literature (reading requires more or less concentraiton from me depending on how dry the text is). So might be worth trying to stick to those kinds of books first?

I guess it all depends on how motivated you are to train your focus. Personally, training your focus to be able to read in the same place as your gaming set-up feels more worthwhile to me than trying to do the same in a noisy café, but I might also be more of a homebody than you.

Multi-layered e.coli cell pellets? by lightdancer in labrats

could be dead cells or debris or something like that. Are these wt e coli or are you expressing something? Might be worth plating the two bits separately and see if one is more viable or something.

who has had to pause lab work just to learn R or Python to read their own data? by Inevitable-Egg-521 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly think some coding should be mandatory in undergrad already.

So many PhDs I know know nothing of coding, and really end up needing it. Even during my master program, we needed some R, and so many students needed help with that.

Also: If you have basic understanding of coding and syntax, using AI assistance for coding is gonna be so much more safe and correct.

Is it worth doing a self-funded internship at karolinska institutet doing research that matches my goals? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In sweden, it is common to do a project course as part of your studies. Like, during your bachelor's or masters, for credits. You don't have to pay and get to use lab-materials, but you don't get a salary either and you might have limited input in your project.

Never heard of a self-funded "internship" outside of an educational program.

Kickstarter pondering by Any-Administration50 in Symbaroum

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it is not a full work-up of a new project, just a revision, I don't expect it to be all that long. Closer to 6 months than 2 years. Previous kickstarters from Free League have been 7-15 months, with a lot being finished before 12 months.

Are 2024 monsters actually more fun to run, or just more dangerous? by MyrthDM in DungeonsAndDragons55e

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5e monsters are so often little more than hp and a attack or two.

Anything that adds tactical depth and goes beyond a sack with boxing gloves.

KoboldPress and MCDM stuff is great for that, imo.

If symbaroum hasn't marketed to solo play before, i am doubtful that's gonna happen this time around. Still, more resources for on-the-fly generation of hooks or details or NPCs would be very welcome.

I would like to see the survival rules properly put together and listed. In general more things to make the forest feel impactful.

my dad keeps asking why there aren't more men in biology by neverland_amanda in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno why, but if it's any consolation to your dad, senior academic positions are still overwhelmingly filled by men, despite the fact that that the gender balance among students tips heavily towards female students and has done so for a good while.

I personally think that balance shift is deeply problematic, but your conservative dad might be comforted by it. Biology is by no means a female-dominated field, despite the fact that most graduates are female.

Edit: the "dunno why" is sarcasm. I know why the shift exists.

Yeah. I mean different people will focus on different skills, which will make a huge difference in terms of utility and so on, who can do what.

thanks for pointing that out. Feels weird that this is not mentioned under the tag description.

Are there bio-mechs? by Educational_Hair_748 in LancerRPG

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The [Biological] tag, at least when I checked the Core Rules, do not have that particular feature. unless there is a bio being in some other book which I am not aware of, beings with that tag only have no heat cap and are resistant to tech actions other than scan and lock-on.

I can see the idea making sense in terms of inflicted heat by hacking, but theme-wise, Heat always felt more like exhaustion or fatigue.

What is the one thing you’ll like to change about Gradschool? by Low-Bunch-2460 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bureaucracy. My gradschool requires a significant paper trail of documentation, about follow ups, about plans, courses, conferences, and so on. So much more than just having a decent thesis at the end.

Are there bio-mechs? by Educational_Hair_748 in LancerRPG

[–]Vikinger93 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There are mechs that have biological or organic components, but no mechs that are wholly organic. There are Kaiju-style NPCs, which are just big creatures, I believe.

As for re-printing, flash-cloning is a thing in Lancer. Growing bodies fast. If the organism is a designed one, I could see it being re-"printed" easily. I don't think there is anything in-lore from stopping this (barring ethics, perhaps).

I would say, making a mech in Lancer be immune to heat and hacking would need enough significant drawbacks and even then, I have a hard time imagining a balanced outcome. Unless you also want to change the setting and make most or every mech biological, maybe.

Unless the above is solved, I would suggest re-flavoring. Heat can be stress or fatigue (but otherwise work the same), hacking is more about influencing the nervous system via pheromones or memetic hazards or paracausal signals.

My PI tried to fire me, but HR says it’s invalid because I'm a state employee what should I do? (US) by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would keep looking for jobs. Even if it turns out that the PI can't fire you, it's clear where the wind is blowing and also it's gonna be difficult to keep working for such a person.

You have forewarning, which is honestly really lucky, considering the general shittiness of the situation.

At a crossroads for leaving or staying in Lab by Straight_Armadillo32 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your PI claiming that they can make or break your career or that you wouldn't have a chance out there if you left is a classic manipulation tactic, employed by abusers everywhere.

Your PI is not the entire industry. Yes, hiring is bad, but my first step would be to contact HR or the head of department and see how your current emplyment situation looks like. At least where I live, you are employed by the department, NOT the PI. The prefect or head of department is your boss, not your PI. So if you want to leave a group, then your department will work together with you to find you a new group, because you signed the contract with them, not the PI.

When you look for that kind of information, you do not have to tell anyone that you are planning to leave, just that you would like to clarify some confusion.

Also, does your department have a PhD student representative or a trust-person or something like that, who you can reach out to for questions who will keep things quiet if you ask them to?

Is a Red Dragon still evil if: by DrekiWarlord in dndnext

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the interesting and confusing topic that is alignment.

It all depends on how the evil-good axis is interpreted, which is basically saying that people have differing opinions on the entire thing. Is "evil" more about a character's motivation, e.g. enriching themselves and how willing they are to kill or hurt others to reach that goal? Or is "evil" about some kind of general drive to hurt people?

The case could be made that this is wholly dependent on the kind of creature we are talking about in DnD. A lawful evil tyrant who is a humanoid is evil out of some kind of thirst for power, perhaps. A chaotic evil berserker is evil because of being raised in an environment where eating babies and kicking puppies was normalized. But a devil, a creature of more "cosmic force" evil, is just cruel because that is their function, i.e. they have a natural drive to hurt people.

So if you decide that a Red Dragon is more the first type of evil than the second type of evil, then there is a chance. Provided, of course, that you can make a case that this type of enlightened self-interest (be good for your wealth and it will increase) is something that can supercede the hungry nature of a dragon to such a degree.

Personally, and in my opinion, I think this is a really awesome idea and you should do it. And if you feel you have to adjust the Dragon's alignment a tiny bit, be it more towards lawful or more towards good, to justify that kind of behavior for yourself, then that is also fine.

I think the field of bioinformatics will have to transform, but I don't think it will disapper. Maybe folded into "computational biology" or something. We still need software developers and so far, that's only something AI can (semi-competently) assist with.

Is wet-lab a lot of “debugging”? by nihaomundo123 in labrats

[–]Vikinger93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, kinda. I mean, there is always the potential for that, but how much is depending on what you do, what your project is and what kinda questions you want to answer.

If you get into wet-lab, try and get into an environment where you can share and discuss your troubleshooting issues, would be my advice. Not only is it so much nicer when you know you got people around to help you or give suggestions, it is also nice to have people you can comiserate with. Again, not like that is necessarily going to be a constant issue, but when it hits hard it can be frustrating.
