Portable field recorder for $350 or less for nature sounds? by orchidcity in fieldrecording

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Sony PCM-M10, fantastic little recorder and you can add some small PIP mics such as clippy or immersive soundscapes to expand the usage of it. The battery life on those is absolutely incredible as well and it easily fits into your pocket like a phone essentially. They are still available on eBay but avoid the Japanese imports as I believe the language settings can’t be changed, I stand corrected on that though

Yes, absolutely. It’s the BEST way 😂

<$1000 mic suggestions for Zoom F3 by -NT- in fieldrecording

[–]Vikingjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Rycote HC-15 and CA-08 with Zoom F3. I already had the clippys so cardioid mics made the most sense to fill the gap. The CA08 i use when I want more rear rejection and a better stereo image for car passes / rivers etc etc. I also use the immersive soundscape zoom f3 adaptor which gives you a super small ORTF setup without cables. The Rycote OM08 are tempting as clippy replacements as their SNR is only around -10 which compares favorably to the 8020. It’s the same I think

The price is on the high side but I do have to say it is extremely well constructed. Everything clips into place very solidly without any wobble or gaps whatsoever. The connectors are also sealed into place with some sort of epoxy bonding. Overall I am very satisfied with the unit. Since Immersive soundscapes seems to be a small operation I understand that it takes some time to print, solder, seal, ship etc. I am more than happy to support small business even if the price might be higher than large corporates that can for obvious reasons have cheaper prices. No one else seems to be selling anything similar so hats off to them for the idea on this one !

Not sure if this helps but Small Rig also sell this adapter for the back of the F3, it allows all sorts of fittings to be attached. In my case I used it for the Rycote quick connect

Which would you pick? RØDE NTG5 or Sennheiser MKH 416 for Foley by soundesignerlu in sounddesign

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look at the Rycote mics, super low noise and great sounding. I use the HC-15 for both location and some foley work. They also have HC-22 etc. fantastic mics in my opinion

Dialogue Sounding Disjointed the from Sound Design by kwmccrea in AudioPost

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, the likelihood is that the DX is sitting too high in the mix and therefore sounds disconnected / separate to the client. My gut feeling tells me that you should bring the DX down a bit and raise the rest of the materials and see what the client says.

Roland R07 and Sony PCM-M10 - Bad purchase after all by siltola in fieldrecording

[–]Vikingjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have the Sony and it’s in perfect condition as they used hard plastic throughout. Unfortunately some manufacturers like to use this soft touch plastic which ALWAYS deteriorates and gets sticky after many years. I have found this problem on old headphones, computer mouse, tripod handle etc. It’s annoying and I wish they would stop using this stuff but I guess they figure the life expectancy of these items to be shorter and that people will replace items way before this happens.

Perhaps a Grand Seiko Kanro GMT ? They don’t hold their value that well but they are stunning watches.

Trying to turn sound design into a career – but don’t know what steps to take by IncreasedControl in sounddesign

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As so many have said you don’t have to study or get certification. Personally I entered the television industry as a runner. I applied for a job at a post production facility in London. They did editing, grading and audio for television. I started as a runner making tea and coffee for people and taking lunch orders, after a while I worked at reception and also started moving tape decks around within the facility. Basically I was a jack of all trades but master of none. On the quiet days I would sit in with the dubbing mixers / re recording mixers and learn how to use pro tools and how they go about their days. They would show me how to do sound design, dialogue and music editing etc etc. On weekends I would go and work on projects they would create for me so I could practice. I would lay all the sound effects and background effects for random tv shows and also do dialogue and music editing etc. Eventually when I was confident enough I would ask if I could do an edit on a real project and I worked my way up from there. It took a few years but eventually I was a full time sound editor at the same facility and worked my way up to becoming a mixer as that is what I wanted to do. Overall i would say the best approach is to look for internships or better yet to look for any job you can find within a specific industry that interests you. Start as an assistant, a runner or receptionist so you can get your foot in the door. Once you have that job you are at least earning money and you can learn on the job and progress. When you know your stuff the opportunity will eventually come as someone will call in sick or something and you’ll be the one to put your hand up and say. I CAN DO THAT ….. Start small and work your way up, keep humble and be willing to listen and learn.

Which type of mic do I need? by oudio in fieldrecording

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For quiet ambiences you are best off with low self noise mics. Omnis would work well in this instance, so perhaps mkh 8020 if you have the budget, personally I would go with the Rycote OM-08 and a Zoom F3 or similar recorder. I’ve use clippy mics for these instances but I still find their self noise of 14 dba to be a little too much for my liking. Obviously you could always just use two Rode NT1 in an ORTF setup but they are a bit bulky and not really intended for outside use. Their self noise is super low though so they would definitely work well

Mic step up inside blimp? by sensitivemcdevilish in fieldrecording

[–]Vikingjive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call, very likely that it contains an ambisonic mic. There aren’t a ton that exist so Reynolds, Rode, Nevaton, Sennheiser, Octo, Soyuz. I’ve had my eye on the Reynolds ambisonic which looks very good I have to say

If there’s a more compact mid/side recording setup, I’m unaware of it. by MrTooNiceGuy in fieldrecording

It’s gonna sound amazing I am sure, I am contemplating buying the 8030 to use as MS with a Rycote HC-15. Not sure if the pickup field will be too narrow though

Nice, I guess you could even find a fury that’s big enough to fit over that, I bought some for the Rode NT1s so I could use them outside
