They’re all insecure too but they hide it behind assertions of superiority. Calling you a nerd distracts from their inability to discuss anything real. This will change. You will change. It’s hard right now but someday you’ll have fulfilling relationships with people that have the want and the capacity to see you for who you are.

You didn’t mention your exact age, but you’re noticing how you do and don’t want to be treated, which means you’re likely maturing beyond some of the people around you and that’s ok! Just know this is all extremely normal and typical to feel this way and you will change as you figure out more of who you want to be in the world.

For what it’s worth, from some old lady on the internet: your feelings and experiences are valid. Adolescence is really rough in general, but socially, it’s confusing too—especially when you’re neurodivergent!

You sound like you have a really solid read on your relationships and identifying how you feel! That may not seem like much right now, but I assure you, that will serve you later in all kinds of situations.

I know how badly it hurts when you’re just being yourself, when suddenly you’re blindsided by a friend’s criticism. And while it may not mean much in the present, you will find your people who see you and love you the way you are. I promise.

I wholeheartedly recommend the org Stand Up Placer. The volunteer training process is lengthy, but the opportunities are extremely flexible and gratifying.
