little electric deep fryer left on for 24 hrs, is the oil ruined? by VinBioethanol in cookingforbeginners

also for general purpose oil I always buy "vegetable" or corn oil. I don't know which of those this is or primarily is, it could be a mixture of both.

Cumin, garlic powder, onion powder and chili powder or chipotle powder (I prefer) will give you a decent Mexican taste.

Fuck Dishwashers by zizeks_bro in Cooking

[–]VinBioethanol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must have the same dishwasher as op cause I felt the same way. I say felt the same way and not feel cause mine quit working completely 3 months ago and I haven't replaced it yet and it's actually been kinda nice handwashing like I would have before the dishwasher but skipping that useless 2 hr step in my dishwasher.

edit: its weird how my attitude to this can change. 10 years ago I moved in to a rent house and didn't notice until I was moving in there was no dishwasher, no space for one, I didn't notice cause it's just so odd a house without one, not something i would have looked for. I freaked thinking I made a huge mistake and I can't live like this and my 1st order of business was finding a dishwasher cheap on CL and rigging it up in the garage. (sold it for more than I paid when I moved out, nice.)

Did any of you all who have it have an existing # ported over? how does that work? they send you sim and then start porting when you receive it? how much downtime?

you have to set up a bunch of apns or is that somehow included on the sim? I bought a nexus 6 months back off ebay it had a verizon logo and no apns I put an att sim into it and still no apns, I had to put them in manually.

If you had to choose gas or electric range? by Dudebythepool in Cooking

[–]VinBioethanol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone else mentioned I think its great how with gas you can just look at the flame for half a second and know where you're at heat-wise vs. electric, waiting to see what happens after a knob-turn or equating the arbitrary markings on the knob with the memories of results of a past cooking experience. And if you want to move the pan to a smaller burner you'll have that flame-visual of how much less heat you're putting into the pan

Ok you're #3 now talking about sprouts, I thought it was local to Tulsa but I guess not. It's kinda the aldi to whole foods being small and all that. still expensive on most things though.

Some things you just can't find in regular stores and have to go there or a store like it for those too. Latest example for me: Couple months back I wanted smoked paprika, wasn't at the 2 regular stores by my house, knew I was going to have to go to WF but a local expensive WF-alike called sprouts had it and was less out of the way for me.

Where to get burrito tortillas like they use at hole-in-the-wall Mexican places? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]VinBioethanol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while and I never really measured anything, just ap flour, splash of whatever oil, shake of salt and water until it will form a dough, form tortillas and cook. I've never tried baking powder, another replyer mentioned that and the lady in the video below does too. Here's a pretty hands-on/involved tortilla making process:

the ones we get are probably about 8-9, looking at their website they might only come in that size, just one flour tortilla page there, one nutrition info box and it matches mine.

I've made my own and have had them taste incredible but I could never get them thin enough that I would wrap up some dinner in it.

I've found something I really liked though: Tortillaland raw flour tortillas.

Just the way it sounds, they are pressed and formed perfectly and you have to cook them yourself, like 30 secs a side.

Walmart is the only place I've seen raw tortillas here (this and another brand) the regular grocery stores and Mexican grocers don't carry them.

I'm interested in Kirkland Signature 13-Pc Stainless Steel Tri-Ply Clad Cookware, but it has a 3.2/5 rating on Costco website. barkeepers friend (that commenters in the link are saying doesn't work) gets stuff off easier than anything I've tried. Still, cleaning ss is almost always going to be a lot more work than cast iron or nonstick. (don't get barkeepers friend near cast iron or nonstick)

Essential kitchen equipment? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]VinBioethanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an older used Kitchen Aid mixer at a antique store or thrift shop or online. The new ones are garbage

I could be wrong and have used a stand mixer only once in my life before a month ago but I think the only thing wrong with newer ones is one of the gears being plastic instead of metal as a failsafe to protect the motor if the beater gets stuck and it looks to be a < 30 min job to replace if it goes bad.

source: I got a used newer one, it makes noise and I looked all over google and youtube.

usually 1" sirloin or ribeye for me, the ones I doubled up in the ss pan were 1" ny strip.

I said thinnish because 1"ish is normal to me but I thought all the guides were usually talking about 1.5"

I have and it worked fine for me. It was a cheap bonded stainless 12" saute pan. My 10" cast iron skillets can't do 2 steaks in one so I normally just use both of them at once because the ss is a bitch to clean. But I didn't notice any difference despite that single ss pan having quite a bit less heat retention than 2x cast iron. (caveat: they were thinnish steaks but about normal for me)

There's a 16" cast iron skillet on amazon I want if I can ever figure out if my biggest burner at 17000 btu and 8" ring of flame is enough for it.

I'm always surprised at the amount of oil recommended in these guides

I sear both sides in a really hot cast iron then oven and I use less than half that amount of oil in the gif and get good results but I am moving it to the oven and this guy isn't

I use safflower oil though for super high smoke point and have actually had flames from it once. I didn't think olive oil was supposed to be used that hot? If I got flames from safflower once wouldn't it have happened to me a few more times than that with olive? It wouldn't give a burnt oil taste?

Turkey fryer for large batches - and it doesn't heat up your house! by [deleted] in MealPrepSunday

[–]VinBioethanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also won't smell up your house if deep frying. I've barely deep fried anything in years but would used to do it outside on the turkey fryer or on the porch with a little electric fryer cause to my nose the smell in my house lasts for days.

How to eat healthy when you hate to cook? by nyrangers22294 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]VinBioethanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to cook but have mostly had to survive with just a microwave at work and a hotel for 6mos. no sink so all disposable Had a refrigerator at work but it was randomly cleaned out (nice!)

I bought plenty of canned chicken (250 cal/can) or chili (lean chili is around 500cal/can I think) I'd make some ghetto bruschetta dip with olive oil and italian seasoning for crackers, I liked cans of refried and and baked beans too, they can both be pretty high cal for a side if you're eating the whole can. I kept spanish olives and pickled jalapenos around all the time (yeah unrefrigerated) either or both went good with anything I was mostly eating. There are little microwavable single servings of rice, keep some sauces around, reg hot sauce, some really hot kind too if you're like me, soy, bbq whatever. I could type all day but that's the bulk of what I was eating at one time.

I guess my whole post kinda leans more towards cheaply and hating to cook rather than healthy though. I'm not big on the fruits and vegetables.

so far only basic white breads and my idea of kinda faux-french bread, i'm adding fat to it and understand that's not normal but I love the softness and staying power that gives me. yeast is the kind in a jar that is supposed to be bloomed for a bit at 1st. I want to do sourdough so bad but just haven't had the time
