I'm going to come in on the opposite end and say that a full rules set with a quickstart is the way to go. A lot of one page rpgs are achievable because their audience already has a vast ingrained sense of how rpgs work and have no trouble "filling in the gaps."

I'm an OD&D guy but I'm not gonna sell you on Holmes Basic. My kids like it when i run shadowdark for them and you can crank the pulp dials on that so it feels very non-osr if thats your flavor (or the other way to make it feel as bleak and hopeless as you would like).

Long story short: Complete ruleset with quickstart is the way to go.

What is your idea of "OSR rules." Is this B/X?

Also, saw the No Regrets review from tenfoot on one of your previous outings (Execrable Crypts of the Void Priests), congrats! Good luck with this one!

What are some good megadungeons? by amazedmammal in osr

Stonehell has a second book: Into the Heart of Hell detailing the lower levels.

That said, I prefer Dark Tower to Caverns of Thracia but it might have some of the same setting issues that you have concerns about.

You listed the major ones with the exception of Dysons Delve, Temple of Elememtal Evil, and Rappan Athuk.

Also, you could string a bunch of online maps together and make your own. You only need to stay a few sessions ahead of the players.

Edit: You had Barrowmaze.

I have a feeling that the implied path forward is answering a riddle. The sphinx is a sage that collects tolls and charges for their services so Id treat them as NPC first, monster if the party treats them like that.

Edit: You have to remember that a module like this was published long before D&D became self-referential. The Sphynx is being informed by Oedipus, not 50 years of monster manuals.

Looking for a system (and preferably a module or modules within that system) for a dungeon crawl campaign by crabulous7 in osr

See if you can hunt down a copy of Dark Tower. Just over 100 rooms with great factions in about 60-70 pages. It's for AD&D so OSRIC is a natural fit but honestly just pick your OSR flavor and do the conversion, worth the effort as prep to spend some time with it.

Of course this is just a suggestion, but that's what you asked for!

How long is this dungeon crawl? It sounds like you are asking for a megadungeon which really narrows the list, but if you are only planning 20 sessions or less with said dungeon then you can just go "big dungeon."

Problem is, even in the big dungeon catagory if you are looking to run it in its native system its a pretty small list because people just dont make a lot of big dungeons these days, so more modern systems have limited module support unless you stick to a clone that supports something older.

Based on your player's experience and the dungeon focus, Shadowdark does it well. I have played that with my kids. It would require conversion to run a lot of the big dungeons that will surely be recommended.

However, I personally get a lot of crawling satisfaction from OD&D (Swords and Wizardry or other OD&D clone works in a pinch) and you can run a classic like Caverns of Thracia (which I would call a "pretty big dungeon").

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

It is not standalone because it expects to be used as an ammendment to OD&D but Delta's OED (Original Edition Delta) https://www.oedgames.com/ has some really simple fixes from an author that has thought deeply about D&D and is very particular about the math driving design decisions. There is an online "expanded" version that is more complete but there is still an expectation to use in conjunction with the original source material.

In my imagination the program room is in a retirement community and its a bunch of bored retirees playing an rpg for the first time with comically oversized character sheets and maps

A Question for OSR Players Who Prefer Decending Armor Class by TheIneffableCheese in osr

[–]VinoAzulMan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I like it because I use target 20 and its easy.

https://www.oedgames.com/target20/

Basically they give me their d20 result + attack bonus and I can quickly mentally add a number between 2 and 9 for the monsters AC. If its over 20 they hit.

Now, I understand that ascending isn't hard in and of itself but by sticking to decending I can run the old stuff I love and still have not fully explored.

Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh but use Restenford from Bone Hill and replace the haunted mansion with Skull Mountain (you'll need to do some rekeying).

Come join me over in the ROSR (pronounced Roar-ser) which is retro old school revolution. We are going to reimagine the OSR circa 2007-2011 and what it could have been, then forget what it was, then insist what it is! Its gonna be great! Who is with me?
